CIF Soccer Semifinals: Baldwin Park boys soccer heading to the D-5 championship vs. Marshall on Friday at Warren High, Downey

Pasadena Marshall vs. Baldwin Park, 5 p.m.

Baldwin Park celebrates: Baldwin Park High’s boys soccer team accomplished its first season goal a few weeks ago when it clinched the Valle Vista League title. It can fulfill its second this weekend at the CIF-SS Division 5 final.
Thanks to a remarkable second-half goal by senior Andy Castillo, the Braves will play for their first CIF title since 2011 at this weekend’s final. Castillo broke a tie in the 62nd minute Tuesday evening and led Baldwin Park to a 2-1 victory over a very tough group from Estancia.
“At the beginning of the season, we had two goals,” Castillo explained, “to win league and win the CIF final. … We’re not gonna be satisfied until we win.”

Los Altos loses in OT: The only thing crueler that losing in a penalty shootout is losing in the final minutes of sudden-death overtime on a penalty kick, something the Los Altos girls soccer team couldn’t avoid trying to contain St. Joseph super sophomore Savannah DeMelo.
DeMelo, who had several big-time colleges chasing her before committing to USC, gave Los Altos fits with her speed and craftiness, forcing the Conquerors to bunker up even more than it normally does trying to contain her.
It almost worked, but with just four minutes before having the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 semifinal decided on PKs, DeMelo cut inside the box and was tripped up from behind by Los Altos defender Kelly Richardson, setting up a penalty kick.
Jesters senior Natalie de Leon stepped up and took it, tucking it in the left corner in the 96th minute for a 1-0 victory on Tuesday.

Sierra Vista’s undefeated season ends: A two-goal lead in the second half isn’t safe in the world of soccer, yet it seemed likely since the team that was ahead, Oak Hills, hadn’t lost all season.
But then again, neither had their opponent, Sierra Vista.
Second-seeded Sierra Vista scored a late goal, but it was third-seeded Oak Hills that was able to hold on to a 2-1 victory in a CIF-SS Division 4 semifinal game on Tuesday afternoon at Oak Hills High School.
