PREVIEW: For a school with one of the richest sports traditions in the San Gabriel Valley, what the South Hills High School girls soccer team is trying to accomplish is rare — even by its own standards.
After winning the school’s first CIF Southern Section championship last week with a 2-1 victory over Yorba Linda to win the Division 3 title, South Hills hopes its next page in the history books is adding a CIF State Southern California Division III Regional championship, and it has a chance to do it in front of a home crowd.
Top-seed South Hills (25-1-5) will take on third-seed San Luis Obispo (27-1-1) in a battle of once-beaten teams in the Division III championship Saturday at Covina District Field at 1 p.m.

SOUTH HILLS SEMIFINAL WIN: Hailey Zerbel’s sudden-death game winner in the first overtime lifted South Hills to a 2-1 victory over El Dorado in the CIF-State Southern California Regional championship. South Hills (25-1-5), which won the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 championship over the weekend, will go for the rare double against San Luis Obispo (27-1-1), a 3-1 winner over Helix on Saturday at Covina District Field at 1 p.m.
