Growing pains. He needs to be consistent.

    • ProbationU

Rosen did fine. He can’t call the plays, catch the passes, block and tackle. The one that needs to be more consistent is Noel Mazzone. He called a terrible game last night. Very stubborn and it happens 2 or 3 times every year. He either needs to learn and change or Mora needs to change him.

      • Pasadena Trojan

He look average yesterday. No superhuman, no heisman winner like guly fans were proclaiming and a loss added to his resume.

        • ProbationU

I think that the OC did him no favors last night. A good OC plays to his players strengths and minimizes their weaknesses. In this case, it is Rosen’s inexperience that is the weakness. Certainly I have not been expecting an unbeaten season and put our odds of winning the South at 20-25%. I don’t know if you watched the game or not, but continuing to run Perkins up the middle on 1st down left us with a lot of 2nd and long and 3rd and long situations. I would have expected quicker adjustments from the staff.

our punting game was atrocious ……we handed ariz st. good/great field position ALL DAY LONG….The guy is just plain bad…

          • ProbationU

We haven’t had a good punter since 2013. Hopefully our new recruit coming in next year will be much better.

          • MPPBruin

Mora looked like he was restraining himself from going ape on the guy after every kick.

          • Ray

“Going ape?” NICE. He does look like Curious George.

          • MPPBruin

            He kinda does.

          • MPPBruin

Offensive line was getting beat up all night long. No run blocking or clean pocket. I expected more quick slants over the middle to expose some of those blitzes.

This loss is on the OC (and Mora). When it was obvious that ASU was going to stop the run at all costs (and pressure Rosen), UCLA should have called more screens, roll outs, and slants. Get rid of the ball quickly, and get Rosen away from pressure.

And the Bruins receivers had a bad night. Ball after catchable ball was dropped, including on UCLA’s last meaningful possession, a third down pass to keep the comeback alive.

          • MPPBruin

I counted at least three dropped third down conversions.

      • http://bestmenudo.com ThaiMex

Prob….I agree with you 100 percent….he’s a stubborn,BLIND, donkey…He did the exact same thing a couple of times each year while Brett was here…I am not saying we should not ever lose…..but it seems pretty simplistic to see when things are not working….Mazzone is an older guy and he isn’t going to change…..

        • 88 Straight

It isn’t about the losing, it’s about how you lose. Sometimes other teams are just better. BYU clearly was set up to stop Rosen and the run was working and he still tried passing too much. Just the opposite against ASU. Whatever happened to take what the defense gives you? He is smarter than that and knows far more football than any of us do. I just don’t understand the thought process.

          • Laker Rod

ProbationU or 88 Straight or whatever you call yourself. You’re wrong as usual.

You can’t be one dimensional. Even if the running game is clicking this is the best time to throw to catch the D off guard. Rosen wanted to throw also but he was exposed by BYU in that he didn’t recognize the coverage BYU had which led to multiple interceptions.

Now…as a coach…after your “true frosh” QB does this and after throwing an interception even against Arizona…any coach may try to stick with a run first mentality. It’s still wrong though in that it’s both Mazzone and Mora who wanted to go with true frosh Rosen in the first place. It’s their own fault. They say they have all the confidence in the world in Rosen…oh really? It doesn’t appear so…especially after Rosen has already thrown 5 interceptions now in 5 games. At this point he’s definitely heading for double digit INT’s.

Coaches don’t want Rosen to run either because he’s obviously showing he can’t take a hit. What’s the point of the read option when the QB isn’t even running. It’s obvious ASU had no respect for Rosen taking off running. Even UCLA tried to do this with Bercovici and got burned big time.

And you claimed Josh Rosen could run. LOL!!! Wrong.

          • 88 Straight

Take what the defense gives you. Simple. Mazzone failed. Once you hit the pass the run will open up and vice-versa. Make it more complicated it you like. Ciao!

          • Laker Rod

Where Mazzone and Mora failed is relying on a true frosh QB who they don’t even trust throwing the ball at times. Since Rosen is throwing interceptions left and right at times it’s a bit difficult to start throwing off the bat and creating a bad turnover deep in your own territory. Come on think.

And Rosen can’t run. In that Arizona game he got hurt a bit on that specific run which is why the coaches don’t want him running to begin with. If he can run why didn’t he do it against Arizona State? Make some sense.

You are continually proven wrong. Why else would you change your name. LOL!!

          • 88 Straight

Believe what you want. You are a bore.

  • EncinitasBruin

    Three main keys to loss:
    1. Better game plan by Graham to take away the run and force Rosen to throw.
    2. Just too many marquee players missing from our D to stop ASU’s multi-faceted attack.
    3. O-line was whipped on line is scrimmage.

ASU was hungrier, more focused, and better prepared to win hat game.

    • 88 Straight

The D wasn’t the main problem, IMO. The offense failed to hold onto the ball and ASU controlled the clock in this game and the D was on the field a very long time because the offense did not do its job. I put most of the blame for that on Mazzone and the play calling.
