  1. Wow, Helton has sure created lots of excitement around trojan football. What a joke! I am sure Haden and company will put a positive spin on a bad recruiting day, maybe the worst since the Hackett era.

          • While SC has a strong class, the Bruins are #7, landing nearly everyone on the wish list: Juarez (SC decommit), Tagaloa, Burton, Stephens, Perez, and Omotosho. SC missed on 2 of their top 3 targets: Gary and Kongbo. Jones still hasn’t committed. In contrast, of the 8 guys on today’s big board for the Bruins, 6 chose UCLA. Best class in four years. Helton finished strong, but this is a far cry from the classes the Trojans have hauled in recently. Top 20, compared to top 8 for UCLA.

          • Scout is the most reliable.

Of course the Rah Rah service has Bozo U as the #1 recruiting class.

          • What site are you looking at that has ucla ranked ahead of USC? ESPN, 24/7 and Rivals all have sc ahead of ucla. That’s despite ucla signing more recruits

          • Nice close. You guys really came on strong in the end. I think both schools closed very well, with UCLA ranking #7 on Scout and SC #11, and SC making big jumps on other boards. I’m extremely happy that we landed 6 of the 8 guys left on our big board in the end. SC make some nice last-minute wins.

          • Well 5 less recruits makes a difference plus..ucla was 4 over the limit of 25..some wont count..

          • Shame on you!

I’ve always given you credit for objectivity. Your spectrum now however, appears to be quite constricted…kinda’ like a rather extreme blue/gold skew.

Thru my peepers, 247 and Scout appear to be the most accurate (of course the term accuracy is used quite loosely). Rivals follows … and ESPN is consistently inconsistent. Let’s look at what the top 3 say. Your version of Diogenes lamp is Scout, so we will begin there. Regarding total points… UCLA is ranked 7th…USC is 11th. Chalk one up for quantity. However when quality rears its ugly head by giving more credence to mean number of stars…UCLA is ranked 17th, while USC…hold onto your hat, is ranked #1.

Oh well, on to 247. UCLA is 12th while USC is 8th. Mean # of stars for USC is 91.5 (good enough for 5th place) while the Bruins languish in 15th place with 88.48. Running tally…Points 1-1 while stars are 2-0 in favor of the Trojans.

Final comparison…Rivals is the name, settling issues is my game. USC via points = 8th…via stars =a tie for 3rd and 4th (3.75). UCLA via points = 11th…via stars = TWENTY-FIRST (3.31).

Quantity or quality? In terms of this years NSD? Once more we turn to Latin. ‘Res Ipsa Loquitor’.

Bottom line…both Universities did fairly well. We now have to place the players in the cupped hands of our coaches. Stay tuned!

          • Gee Lar Dog, “Your spectrum now however…”? As usual, had you a decent editor, your thread would be about 2 short paragraphs.

I’m guess you subscribe to the Mitch Chumpchex school of enquish. He always needs 8 or 9 words to say YES or a NO.

          • I appreciate the fact that at some point in time you thought I was objective. Most of my friends and my better half might have a different opinion! USC closed surprisingly well–kudos to Helton and his staff, especially poaching some big-time players out of FL and GA. In terms of the services, I have always had a preference for Scout–I’m biased, however, because my nephew (SC ’02) works for Scout in Seattle. ESPN is SEC-enamored, so I don’t put much credence in them. Rivals and 247 are balanced–and in ALL the services, both our teams were in the top 15, with nods to the top 10 in 1 or 2. However, there was no loser today in the crosstown rivalry recruiting war: If you are as thrilled with SC’s class as I am in UCLA’s, then that’s what counts, Larry. As I always say, it’s the Shaw Effect that really matters. On one thing we can both agree: coaching is what wins the day. One last little-known fact: Last year, when USC had the #1 rated class, guess who had the higher mean number of stars? Yep, UCLA.

          • *** Last year, when USC had the #1 rated class, guess who had the higher mean number of stars? Yep, UCLA.***

Our recollections certainly differ. Higher mean number of stars last year …UCLA? Nope! Not even close. Only in one’s dreams and perhaps over in some Bruin site. Unsubstantiated generalizations are best reserved for cocktail parties. BTW, most are under the impression that ‘Bama was the consensus #1 rated class last year.

USC did close well and our fans should be reasonably pleased, but in terms of ‘need’ we fell a bit short. UCLA, on the other hand appeared to shore-up many of their weak areas. As far as a cross-town rivalry recruiting war, you and others can get wrapped around that axle, my focus is upon USC.

Tonight’s hoops game is what currently worries me. Most of our many recent band wagon fans think it will just be a slam dunk for us. UCLA 5.5-6 point dogs? Came close to taking the points myself. Money has little relationship to fealty…separate issue. Killers for us can be indecision, losing focus…and the GDMF zone. Outside of that, just another walk in the park?

          • I think the Bruins will show up tonight–it will be a close game, I believe. However, this is the most unpredictable Bruin BB team since Lavin left.

So, as a journalist by training, I loathe unsubstantiated numbers or stats slurred at cocktail parties, so here is my reference: If you go to ScOut, click on Team Rankings under the FB Recruiting tab, and then in the upper-left corner choose 2015, it will bring up last year’s rankings–where USC was the overall #1 pick (mind you, I am not referring to 247, Rival$, or ES8N). Then, sort by “avg”, and voila: Alabama #1, UCLA #2, and USC #3 in avg-stars-per-player.

          • Point is/was…not to imply overall agreement of 4 sites, when applicability is but one…in this case Scout…just state the source…and generalized deception goes bye-bye. Otherwise, it would be like saying Hillary nevah’ speak with forked tongue just because she once said, the sun rises in the East.

See ya’ at Galen tonight if you choose to attend. I will be the one wearing wearing an SC hat. (Please refrain from using this as a springboard to a Owns-like reflexive response badmouthing our usual attendance.) Actually, as it it turns out, our attendance vs the Fuskies last week was only a few hundred less than when the purple ‘N Gold played you at the Paulette crib.

  2. Jamel Cook, Connor Murphy, Josh Fatu and Vavae Malepeai already today… Guess the negative Sallys can cry about our outsized performance so far. The day is still not over 🙂

    • We also added Keyshawn Young. The day just keeps getting better and better 🙂 Sorry for your disappointment trolls.

      • Seriously, are you kidding? UCLA just landed a killer calls including Juarez, Tagaloa, Burton, Modster, etc. Top 10, possibly top 5 on some sites.

          • Fair enough! Gotta love NSD. Great SC class, by the way. Some great gets in the final hours.

          • Its good that we both have good classes. The game needs to mean something to get national credit for the win. Jack Jones just committed. We are now top 10. I think we have 20 and can sign 20. Who knows right? We were limited by numbers so this is a good situation

          • Frankly I never thought we’d end up ranked higher than ucla in the eyes of ESPN, 247 and Rivals. The chips really fell well for us, like a dream – especially with Price. USC even thought we were gonna get Kongbo away from TENN. You never get everybody. Even ALA can’t do that.

          • And if you guys handed landed Asiasi (which I thought you would), it would have been top 5. Both programs had stellar days.

        • You’re right…a few observers thought the two schools tied today, and none that UCLA disappointed.

It was sort of a role reversal, with UCLA’s win rate rising on big-time locals, and USC’s success depending more heavily on out-of-staters.

Both schools went through disappointing game performances and coaching changes, but finished well.

Folks on this site don’t want to look at it, but it’s much more equal now than in many years. IMO, Mora is the best since Vermeil.

    • I’m not negative, I’m realistic. And realistically, the staff over-delivered today, and deserves kudos.

Scott will have to stand alone today. 🙂

  3. Clay has done an amazing job at USC so far. He has assembled the best staff in USC history and beaten UCLA. It is also looking like he will lock up a top 25 class. We made the right choice!

    • You are a real comedian. This is an unknown staff who will never be in the same class as McKay and Carroll’s hires. A top 25 class is nothing to speak of in the big time recruiting world. A # of NR players on scout, and again way too many wide receivers.

      • Hugh is going up in a balloon.

(And don’t forget J. Robinson’s first tenure, which was very productive, or the pre-McKay glory coaches.)

Still, this staff exceeded expectations today, given all the obstacles (even granting that Helton’s coaching exacerbated some of those obstacles).

      • If you may or may not remember, the two hires you stated above were not thought to be that great until after they proved themselves. I have my doubts about Helton, but even I was encouraged by yesterday. Even after his first season, people thought Carroll hire was a mistake.

  4. It appears Unowns is working the live blog and is taking other folks handles. All the Monarch posts are coming from Unowns. He must have gone to the drugstore early this AM and got his CVS vodka. Hope he got two bottles so he passes out soon. But he has his AA class this afternoon.

  5. Absolutely fantastic job by Helton and staff. Couldn’t have asked for a better finish, one of the best ever by the Trojans. For a small class numbers-wise, this group is unreal, with many superior kids coming from far away with big time programs on the losing end. Good sign. Terrific balance and star power. Helton really showed he’s got some excellent recruiting chops.

    • Jack you where the guy wetting his panties yesterday saying Helton couldn’t recruit?

      • Any grownup who talks about “wetting his panties” is wearing ’em.

Every person here except you knows USC pulled off one of its biggest recruiting comebacks ever.

You were happy with yesterday’s class. You’ve obviously got lots of little gutty blood in you.

        • Lol , I told you yesterday to calm down that things will be alright and you went on a rant about assistant coaches and blah blah blah. I knew yesterday that we had plenty of gas in the tank. This team of coaches know how to close. Wait until they get a full year under their belt. Fatu was only last minute add that surprised me .This would be top 3 class if we had 5 more slots.

          • You didn’t know diddly or your would have posted what was gonna go down. Typical poser. You had no idea what was going to happen with USC today. Even the coaches I know were worried, because you never know on LOI Day, especially with a new staff, a bad season and lots of targets far away.

I posted later in the day I heard things were looking up, but what I heard sounded too good to be true, and it was with one major guy.

          • Lol, so Helton was a loser yesterday am who hasn’t had anybody commit to him and by the afternoon he had turned things around. Today he’s your best buddy and I’m the poser. Keep up the good work

          • Put your wet panties back on loser. Helton was a loser at recruiting yesterday and that’s how most Trojans felt when Rivals had USC ranked at a lowly unheard of #32. The vast majority of those polled thought ucla would outrecruit USC easily. Today Helton proved he had a winning plan. Duh.

          • I was not a part of the “vast majority ” and you ridiculed me yesterday for it. Today you can’t admit your wrong and that gets you the wet panties award.

          • Whoa, Block and Stinky: Fist City!

On a better note, UCLA cranked an outstanding 2016 FB class.

          • Just Squats loses again. USC could only take 20 and we still beat you, as usual. Have a few drinks on us Trojans. Aren’t you good at that? Ya baby. Pound ’em.

          • Not according to Scout, the most objective scouting service.

I’m sure you’re going by figures rigged by JG for the Bozo U PR dept.

          • Let’s see: 247, ESPN and Rvials all like USC. Three to one. The numbers always favor USC, but a boozer like you wouldn’t get that. As I said, pound ’em Just Squats. That’s all you’re good for.

          • It’s like the way UCLA grads deal with women… Quantity over quality…

          • You’re 50th post today…still not funny basement boy.
            #ItPutstheLotionintheBasket

          • 247 was voted the worst service, ESPN is a Bozo U shill, and Rivals is plain Jane.

            Stinky, what does scout say?

          • That’s inaccurate my brother, there’s something called a miracle berry that makes sour turn sweet

    • Perfectly said!;!
Wild nervous ride the last few days,Bottom line coaches had a plan , and delivered big time..

    • First signing day since about 2002 that I wasn’t all over this process. I really hope you’re right. Regardless, I have a feeling this coaching staff will actually COACH these plays much more effectively than the Sark/Wilcox administration did. At least the players love Helton and respect him. That goes a long way in my book.

      • Distinctly exceeded my expectations as well.

It’s easier now for me to understand the stretch to name Tee Martin as OC. Similarly, the admin. assistant who was recruiting Florida needs to be signed up for something he wants…or he’ll be gone.

  6. Ok, Clay has carried on about getting more physical up front, Ok, Who did we get that is going to be that stud? Looks like we struck out which means we will be fielding an undersized D line next year…what a game it’s gonna b against Alabama next year……

  7. It’s good to see the all of the jealous, no face trolls being concerned about what USC is doing on signing day. That must mean Clay Helton is doing something right….LOL!! because I doubt if any Trojan bloggers are peaking at Jack Wang’s page.

    • Nice class for SC, but there’s just no killing the excitement in Bruin Nation today. Of our 8 targets on the Big Board going into today, we landed 6, including our next “Myles Jack” in Mique Juarez, and our next Kenny Clark in Boss Tagaloa. Great day for both programs.

      • By definition, they’re not elite if they are 3 or 4 star… You have one, that’s one, “elite” player. Great class though…seriously…for both schools. Both schools should want the rival to be good. That creates a true rivalry. Sadly, UCLA fans (I exclude you) wish for the opposite.

      • Ok Underachiever UGLY the bruins won’t do anything with this class like the previous years they will start out hot in the beginning of the season and then flame out in the month of October and November like they always do.

    • Let me tell ya, nothing but hand-wringing and tears for Bruin Nation in landing the #7 class in the nation, including 4-5 star elites such as Juarez, Tagaloa, Stephens, Omotosho, Burton, Alloway, Modster, Howard,Toailoa, Lee, Owens, Felton, Barnes, etc. I’m also very upset that ESPN called our linebacking class the best in the nation. Crocodile tears.

  8. No excuses now. Clay and the other coaches better light a fire under these guys and excel.

  9. 2016 Rivals,com:Recruiting Posts:

    Highest ranked school: Alabama

    Most 5-Stars: Alabama with Five

    Most Recruits: UCLA with 29 (incl 5 WR’s and 4 LB’s)

Nations Second ranked WR:: USC’s Vaughns

Nations Second ranked LB: UCLA’s Juarez

    Measurements of USC’s 4 DL: Betiku 6’4″ 246

    • USC had the highest average star rating with 3.90 ahead of Alabama.
In Scout, USC had the most 5-star signees (4)

Out of the four recruting services ESPN, SCOUT, RIVALS, and 247 USC was the highest ranked in three (ESPN, RIVALS, and 247) giving USC the Top Recruiting Class in the Pac12.

          • A number of pundits thought the two So Cal schools finished in a tie today.

USC’s class of 20 finished in almost a dead heat with Georgia’s class of 20. Interesting…Georgia fired Richt (a nice guy, like Helton) for always under-performing relative to his recruiting classes.

          • I’m just gonna come out and say how I really feel Ben. UCLA had a good haul. But their strength was mostly in numbers. Look at the quality of both classes, and where we went and got our players. The only thing that held us back from a sure top 5-10 class was that we only had 20 rides compared to their 29. That’s a huge difference in points for rankings. And not taking anything away from UCLA or Stanford, today Tom Luginbill said on ESPN and Greg Biggins also said later on Scout that SC’s numbers are the only thing that held them back today. We had the best class in the PAC 12 in 3 of the 4 recruiting services. Now…if we can start getting results on the field is what we have to turn our focus to. I’m really excited to see and hear how this coaching staff will get things done starting in the spring. No offense to Helton, but he’s still fresh and will only go as far as his staff will help in taking this team the next level.
And Georgia’s always gonna get talent. They usually have a huge amount of highly rated players in the that state and the Bulldogs usually get them (except for Chuma Edoga and E.J. Price Lol!). But I think it was time for Richt to go. He couldn’t get them over the hump.

          • So the rah rah talking point that Scout is the most reliable recruiting service is no longer operational?

          • They are good in their player ratings, but the team rankings are not a true picture of the best class in the nation. 29 scholies will get you up at the top, while 20 holds you down.

          • I get what you are saying but it is funny to see that the same people who 2 days ago were saying recruiting ranking don’t matter are now arguing whether we beat the ruins or not. In reality what matters is did we address our needs and bring in players who will stick and end up being contributors on the field the next 4 years.

          • Yesterday was a day the trolls always remember. Not for the recruiting, but how they were able to run rampant on the live blog and ruin it for everyone. It was like a group of little jr hi kids.

          • Correct. I had a post yesterday deleted because I said the exact same thing and complained that the blogger and the paper that he works for have no control. they should be ashamed.

          • Scout is very reliable. And their so reliable that Greg Biggins (of Scout) said USC in terms of Quality had the best class in the pac12. The knock on ESPN is they never give west coast players the proper respect in terms of Stars. It’s pretty rare for a west coast kid to have a 5 star ranking. 247 recruiting is pretty legit. They have they’re own ranking and a separate raking where they combine all four services.

          • Sammy UCLA hasn’t had 6 HC’s in last three years, or the laughingstock, most dysfunctional Pac-12 FB program.

        • We have the BEST pac12 class. Rivals, ESPN, and 247 have us ranked as the highest PAC 12 team. While Ucla is on higher in Scout.

Also 247 has two rankings. They have their own rankings, and also have another ranking where they combine the averages of all 4 recruiting services, and USC again had the higher ranked class.

3 of 4 say we have the #1 class in the pac12. If USC had 29 or even 25 we would have blown UCLA away.

And the only service that we didn’t have the higher ranking in (Scout) we still had the best average player star 3.90 than any team in the nation.

I’m rambling, but yes SteveG we would’ve taken scout if we had more scholies

    • Balanced analysis. UCLA and USC should always be in the top 10, with all the talent that resides in SoCal. I’m sure you guys are as thrilled with your class as I am with the Bruins’ haul. See you in November in the Rose Bowl. Up next: Alabama and Texas A&M,

  10. This from Rivals/Yahoo Sports
    IN-N-OUT BURGER FRANCHISES IN L.A.

Both USC and UCLA finished strong on signing day, and in the process added size to their classes. That should be good news for the West Coast’s fabled fast food chain. Take, for example, new USC commit E.J. Price out of Lawrenceville, Ga. The state of Georgia does not have In-N-Out Burger, but the chain has a chance to secure a customer for life now with the 6-foot-6, 317-pound Price headed its way. Throw in the Trojans’ new defensive end commits Connor Murphy and Josh Fatu and new UCLA line commits Boss Tagaloa and Francisco Perez and In-N-Out locations around the Los Angeles area might be seeing Double-Double orders going out the door a little quicker.

Sounds like both schools did well. Now it’s time for them to get to work. Fight On.

  11. I’m happy this circus is over, I’m happy that we ended up finishing strong considering all the issues USC had to overcome, I would have preferred couple more D-line men but we’ll be more then ok!!.. It’s unfortunate so many inmature block heads ruined the “LIVE CHAT” with their B.S it’s redicules people acting like a pimply faced inmature teenager thinking it’s funny. .FIGHT ON!!!!!

  12. I just found out it was National Signing Day when I clicked up yahoo to see if Bill Cosby is still in trouble. This used to be a day I looked forward to, now… sad state of Trojan football.

    • Wash out your shorts, it was a good day for Troy! Cosby, OJ and Filner will be getting together soon for the Loser Club, oh and Trump will be their president.

  13. Recruiting has never been the issue at USC. Its always been the coaching thats the problem when we dont do well

  14. Oregon fan here…

just wanted to ask you guys if you think Malapai is going to be any good

most duck fans on the internet are not real upset that he flipped – I saw some of his highlights and he looks kind of slow, so I don’t think he will be an impact player

    any thoughts?

oh yeah, Conner Murphy will be a good on – in my opinion

maybe your team can beat Stanford this season?

I know we are rivals, but we NEED a good USC and a good Oregon to get respect and a place in the playoffs for the pac12 champs

God forbid if college football ever selects 2 sec teams and leaves out the pac12

    • He looked pretty good at the Army All America game last month. I think he gained the most yardage of any running back. He spun a couple defenders out of their socks and ran hard. I think USC got a good one.

    • ***I know we are rivals,***
Admitidly the quackers have torn us a new one in recent years , however one swallow doth not make a summer.
Rivals?? May I direct your attention to all games played against one another beginning with the inception of the series back in 1915…Joke city! The only way you can say rivals and USC in the same sentence is if Oregon changes its name to Notre Dame.
As an aside, your fans are disgusting animals at Autzen as well as the Colli. They make those from UCLA seem like choir boys/girls.
      Welcome to the site.

  15. Anyone else notice the blog writer has been awfully quiet? I’m sure if USC wouldn’t have done so well we would’ve been subject to 3-4 snarky posts by now. Instead crickets…
