Joe Jares Remembered

Joe Jares, third from left, joins the 2015 USC Athletic Hall of Fame class that included Pete Carroll.

Joe Jares (third from left), a member of the USC Hall of Fame, Daily Trojan sports editor and long-time columnist/sports editor at the Los Angeles Daily News, passed away Saturday night. He was 78. I worked with Joe for many years and he had many accomplishments as an successful author, professor at USC and even a member of the USC freshman basketball team. Among his books was “Conquest: A Cavalcade of USC Football” in 1981 with Coach John Robinson.

My colleague, Tom Hoffarth, wrote an obituary that is worth reading here.

  1. Thoughts with you and your colleagues, Scott. Sorry for your loss.

  2. Good thing he probably didn’t write/edit like you: “…as an succesful author???” Really? You’re better than that. Or are you?

    • I could see you standing up and correcting a heartfelt eulogy at a funeral.

      • Dudes, my comment had nothing to do with the deceased. It had everything to do with someone who claims to be a journalist. If I’m a journalist, I’m making damn sure my posts, articles, etc. are clean as hell. That’s it. Nothing more, nothing less.

        • Sure it did. You picked the blogger’s tribute to a fellow Trojan to attack him. You are classless.

          • I’m a fellow Trojan. Are you? You need a hug. Go see gotroy. The blogger’s the classless one. Pick that fight.

        • You claim to be a USC graduate yet you attack a fellow Trojan in Scott Wolf, who was a journalism major at USC. . Why don’t you e-mail the sports editor and tell him he needs to edit the blog more closely? DUUUUUUDE.

      • Secondly, you claim I have no class, yet I’ve never seen you defend USC and Mario Danelo when that slob BruinRob or whatever that fool’s name is does that cute picture of someone falling off a cliff. Take a look in the mirror. Sorry.

        • I condemned that ruin for his disgusting Danelo post years ago. Now you show up and start telling people what they did or didn’t do. You are a typical Snowflake thinking the world begins and ends with you.

  3. First of all he is not pictured in either row third from the left if I can count to three. Both are Afro-Americans which he was not. Jares went to my high school “Hamilton High” on the west side where he was five years ahead of me. His father was Brother Frank Jares who wrestled professionally back in the fifties at the Olympic Auditorium. Used to correspond with him on occasion a few years back then his e-mail address changed. Sorry to lose another Trojan!

    • He is in the picture! 3rd from the left just like WoIf says. They are standing staggered in the rows. Don’t mind the rows and count three from the left and there he is!

Don’t you feel like the Fu@king Arshole! And no! You can’t count to three! Must be that southern cal education!

  4. Best boss ever. Classy and so kind. He sold me his ’68 Mustang. Love you, Joe.

  5. As I attended the ’15 Hall of Fame dinner to see & hear Pete, it was Jares speech that impressed, dazzled and emotionally tugged at every heart in the room. You knew you were listening to greatness. RIP – Fight On!
