  1. From what I’ve seen so far with the team, a few assistant swap won’t be enough to turn this team around because the biggest source of its problems is none other than Helton himself.

    • If any athletic director has to micromanage his head football coach, then he probably needs a new coach.

    • ‘Maybe’ – consider the graphic ineptitude of the Irish last year and their radical turnaround this year. Kelly was there then and now – he’s had minimal impact – it was his ransacking of his staff that made their ‘sea change’.

Problem is Helton doesn’t have that kind of personality i.e. “…there’s the door – goodbye – Martin, Callaway, Udeze, McCullough, Nansen, Prendergast!”

      • Yeah, but let’s be honest here. You can’t exactly equate Helton to Kelly because they’re very different coaches with vast differences in personality and demeanor. I’d choose Kelly over Helton anytime for the HC for my team.

        • I wouldn’t regardless of his recent success (2017) and his past (2012). Swarbrick has ceded academic controls over their players to Kelly. Lizzy Seeberg – that incident happened in August 2010…2 mos. later Declan Sullivan died falling from a collapsing ‘scissor’ elevator tower specifically because the head coach denied any change to leave the field even with >50 mph winds.

Numerous players (5) arrested a year ago August –

Look USC is no pillar of decorum these past 12 years but since that fool Josh Shaw jumped from his girl friend’s apartment back in 2014 the only incidents have been a former head coach outting himself as an alcoholic and a former AD getting exposed as a theif of a non-profit he was directing.

Our probems have been found and discarded – the irish still have that arrogant a%% Kelly and rest assured, there is something else looming in the wings.

          • LOL! Hey, don’t get me wrong, comrade. I don’t exactly put Kelly on my honor roll of coaches. But I would still choose his personality for a football coach over the soft and unsure demeanor of Helton. A capable head coach needs to be far more decisive and even ruthless at times to lead an organization filled with over 100 young kids, several unruly blowhards, and a few winos.

          • Unfortunately, Hugs Helton is a big-time cupcake, especially compared to other much more successful coaches. It wouldn’t surprise me if he’s a sorry snowflake too.

He’s very much mismanaged the Trojans this year, just like he did at the start of last season. Only this time he hasn’t had a sterling QB phenom to bail himself out. He’s also gotta be pushed into things because he’s not a natural leader.

Now Swann will force him into some serious moves. But 49-14 was the big price we all had to pay.

          • ” He’s also gotta be pushed into things because he’s not a natural leader.”

Very good point….. Mr Swann needs to have a man-to-man with Clay and present some ultimatums

          • Pete led, kids follow.

            Kids lead, Helton follows.

Helton gets wagged by the tail a lot. He’s always happier than a hog in mud. I’ll give him that.

Weird. And our team is disguised by winning against teams with less talent. Funny how things can become so clear when you watch a 49-14 annihilation.

Of course, things are never as bad as they seem. Unless we somehow lose to ASU. Then all heck will break lose. Gonna be a bumpy ride for this finesse team.

          • Pete cheated (then ran like a 7 year old girl) and left you holding the bag of sanctions.
Yet you still worship him and deny he violated NCAA rules.
            How dense can you get?
            Cue the deflection…..

          • Oh, it’s my little puppy dog following me around, as usual. Only a wimp like you would ever worship a football coach. Typical little gutty.

          • The only team I know USC will hammer for sure is you pitiful little gutties. You’re so bad that even the mediocre Trojans will wipe the floor with you as usual. Hah, hah, hah. Get ready. Nov. 18 is gonna be yet another sad one for you baby bruins and The Chimp!

          • Any talk of UCLA shutting down football for this season and starting over next fall?

          • So Jacquie, Mouth of the Trojans, you predicted victory over Notre Dame and UCLA. What say you now, football genius, about the result of the ASU vs SoCal game?

          • You pay attention to every detail here, catalog comments and comment endlessly, except during weeks where UCLA gets spanked.
What would your life be like without this place?

          • The guy has some mental issues. Degrading people and their thoughts/opinions is what his pathetic life has been reduced to. He’ll came back with some lame reply

          • I’m predicting ucla gets drilled by UW. What’s wrong, cat got your tongue Wimp Boy? Is that called deflection or just too much reality for your little pimple head?

The poor little gutties. Losers of the West still don’t have one single AP or Coaches vote. Deflect that baby bruin. Too bad it’s a matter of public record. Hah, hah, hah.

          • Can’t wait for the beat down that the Bruins give bozo u in nov—Gee, what happened to JB—you won’t hear from him until next year when the toejams are once again rated high pre season and then fold!

        • Not McCullough, the rb’s have have very rarely turned the ball over. Keep him.

      • Definitely Not McCullough. He has been the real gem in the entire bunch. The RBs look good.

    • If massive changes aren’t made at the end of the season, USC deserves what it gets. This is a staff that KNOWS they’e inept —hence the ‘attitude’ on the part of Pendergast, Tee Martin, Callaway….and, lately, even Helton when legitimate questions are asked about the staggeringly disappointing results posted by this team (barely beating teams other Pac 12 teams are pounding and ‘giving up’ against Notre Dame after 2 minutes of play). The defensive, half a**ed answers tell you they aren’t comfortable explaining what it is they do all day. Our two coordinators act like there are 2 different kinds of reporters—-the ‘good’ reporters who don’t ask about obvious problems with play calling or coverages—–and the ‘bad’ reporters who do ask.

  2. SC defense hasn’t been effective since the Texas Rose Bowl. It’s time for a change. Cant have a top tier team without a great defense. Can’t have a great defense without stopping the run…

  3. How high is what will decide when USC is back into championship form. A new HC and staff for 2018 will give us a shot in 2020 at the soonest. Rebuilding a program takes years.

    • Yes, it usually does, but it’s a chance you need to take to ever see the glory again. You do remember the transition from the Hackett era to Carroll’s, right? A brilliant coach is needed for us to be a national elite again.

      • Serious question. If you replace Helton, who do you get? Realistically. Saban isn’t coming , Urban isn’t coming and neither is Dabo. There are no guarantees. The latest , greatest coordinator doesn’t always work out.And plenty of lesser program or lower division coaches have gotten their chance and couldn’t cut it. I am not advocating for Helton to be fired , nor am I saying he shouldn’t. But realistically who is the next guy? If Swann pulls the trigger and doesn’t get it right then the program is really screwed. Keeping Helton or letting him go is a major decision and can’t be made lightly. I said this earlier—if you dump Helton , Swann must eradicate any connection to the Kiffin-Coach O-Kiffin-Helton era. If there is to be a next coach he has to come from outside the USC bubble.

        • Your guess is as good as mine on who’s going to be the next top guy at SC. However, I’ll be all for a change even if it means getting someone outside the USC bubble because the truth of the matter is we must keep trying until we find the next Howard Joneses, John McKays, John Robisons, and Pete Carrolls to be a national elite again. Did anyone know what Pete Carroll was going to bring us at the time of his hire? You never know until you try. And I’ll tell you this. SC needs to hire someone with much more coaching credential and proven resume as a head coach than Helton was for it’s next coach because it can’t afford to provide a job training site for another inexperienced coaching trainee ever again.

        • Common sense and Rah – Rah, pixie dust, who cares, it’s not my money demands are mutually exclusive.

        • Ken Nuimatalolo from Naval Academy. A leader and solid coach. Affordable, knowledgeable, and has Navy playing above their potential.

          • Seems like a homerun. Developing players is a must and Nuimatalolo definitely does that.

        • Herman from Texas, Shaw from Stanford, Whittingham from Utah, the Wisconsin coach and bring his def. coordinator, and oline coach.

          • All good choices. I think Whittingham is only realistic name on your list. Herman won’t leave Texas for USC if he has it going and it looks like he has laid the groundwork for success. Shaw is a Stanford guy through and through. Same with the WI guy. I would take any of them.

          • The only one who might consider the job would be Whittingham–are you serious about the others?

    • To be honest, I wouldn’t hire Les Miles for SC coach. His coaching career has already peaked out at LSU, and I don’t think he’ll create another glory days again.

  4. Like I have been saying for 2 weeks now Helton is gone. Swann and company are already looking. How much more proof you all need.

  5. New o line coach. Callaway is failing big time. Tyson Helton has ruined Sam darnold. Not sure if he’s added anything. Tee Martin needs to coach QB’s and we need a top notch o-line coach that’s also a run game coordinator. Then it’s tee and the OLine coach + WR and RB coach adding in. It’s obvious there’s a big disconnect on offense.

    • Bring back the oline coach that went to Michigan, the Stanford line coach or the Utah line coach.

  6. There has to be changes especially on offense. This offense has got talent and it just didn’t work. CH meets with Lynn Swann every monday and I’m sure he’s reading CH the riot act just as the AD at ND gave that message to Brian Kelly after last years debacle season. There will be changes. I’d be surprised if Tee Martin is still here. SC turned it around last year after going 1-3. I’d be surprised if that happened this year. Last year they were relatively injury free. This season is an injury nightmare. I don’t expect them to win this saturday in Tempe.

  7. USC has been a circus since Carroll left, with Kiffin, Coach O, Helton, Sark, and then Helton again. I think retaining Helton was a way of trying to bring some stability back. What saved us last year was Darnold, and some key Sark recruits like Adoree Jackson and Juju Smith. Without Darnold, even last year’s team would have lost half their games. In my opinion, Darnold is a much better talent than Palmer, Leinart, Booty, Sanchez and the rest but he has been hampered by mediocre coaching, horrible OL play and lack of player development, particularly at the receiver position. For the most part, Helton’s recruits have not panned out (with the exception of Steven Carr and a couple others). The ONE COACH I would not touch is the running backs coach. Other than him, I’m in favor of starting with a clean slate and going after a top flight coaching staff.

There is no WAY that ND is that much better than USC. That performance was an embarrassment to the University; this staff let down the players. I honestly think USC could go 2-2 the rest of the way. We don’t deserve to go the Pac12 Championship.

The person I feel the worst for is Sam Darnold. He has been carrying the team on his young shoulders all year. What a class act and a credit to USC. Too bad this staff has let him down.

    • The University is an embarrassment to their alumni (at least those with a hint of moral code) OJ’s trophy and jersey are still proudly displayed on campus, you fire coaches at the airport, hire drunks then fire them when they lose, your head fundraiser is an alleged predator, your Med School Dean and his replacement were alleged perps that were fired only after outside discovery of their misdeeds, and you long for the good old days when Carroll, who screwed the pooch and left you with NCAA sanctions, rule during his reign of non-compliance. NCAA got it right when they coined the phrase “Lack of Institutional Control”

    • All true. The chickens have come home to roost and Helton’s praying to Jesus that Darnold regains his 2016 form. What else is he gonna do? Ask John Houston to tackle better? Ask Grabby to get better quick and suddenly learn how to cover?

    • He carrying who. He shouldnt even be starting. Green should of been our QB and the student body and Team knows this Politics at the position and horrible coaching. But yall dont want to talk about the truth. Darnold is just average athlete.

  8. Actual reporting? Or just Scottie Surmising? If the latter, yes, you are the MASTER of conventional wisdom – 8 years running.

  9. According to sources, southern has reserved an office adjacent to the tarmac at LAX early Sunday morning when southern cal football team is scheduled to land.

Mayfair Moving van is also reporting Clay Helton’s wife has reserved a truck for a move to Kentucky during the next week.

  10. I can remember leaving a the Coliseum after Steve Stenstrum led Stanford to a last-minute 24-21 win in ’91. In the tunnel, a loud-mouth Cardinal fan was chanting “Fire Ted Tollner! Fire Ted Tollner!” Of course, the USC coach was Larry Smith, but we knew what that meant. It cut deep. We were shrill, impulsive fans/alumnus. We were reactionary meat heads, who were so consumed by running out of town whoever presided over the latest loss that we didn’t take the time to critically examine the administrative works that would hire the next guy. I’m not saying Clay Helton is going to succeed long term. In fact, I’m not sure I love his chances. I am saying he recently went 13-0, and we should take into account that we’ve run a number of guys out of here recently. I mean, I’d rather be just average for a few seasons than be Texas. Process has to play itself out. Do you really want to hook your wagon to Lynn Swann, SW? Don’t be on the wrong side of Trojan history here.
