Underdogs can win, too

A couple of things …

The intense concentration on schedules and which is weak and which is
not, which prepares a team better for league play and which does not,
apparently tends to obscure several important facts.

If a team is favored over another and defeats that team, at least
acknowledge the accomplishment, even if the victory isn’t as onesided as
expected.

In case the team expected to win doesn’t, be careful in evaluating
why. It doesn’t necessarily mean the favorite played poorly. Conisider
that the underdog wanted to win, too, and that unexpected, even
unexplained circustances may have contributed to the outcome.

This is not meant as an alibi but rather to interject some reason and
consideration into what often becomes personal in blog discussions.

What i love about HS football is that any given Friday (or Thursday or Saturday) is that anything can happen. Even the mightest of teams can be brought down by the underdog. And like you said….you can’t always explain it.

For example, some team in the Del Rio is going to take El Rancho lightly because of their schedule. But those guys are better than everyone thinks. 6 turnovers against St. Paul did not help them. If they can just keep the ball…they will beat some of the favored teams. I think St. Paul is another example. They might not win the Mission League, but because of their huge hearts and desire, they will beat 1 or 2 of the teams they play in the next 5 weeks and they will be considered underdogs against all of them.

Someone has got to win and someone has got to lose. Regardless, support your local team. Win or lose, applaud these kids for the effort they are putting forth.

    Rodger,
It seem that what you write can be taken the wrong way because many factors, like how long you’ve been doing this year in and year out, and the fact that you give props(well deserving to whom it belongs)to the teams and players that do well, somebody will be pastover, but if they deserve it, so be it. I’ve seem the players only work harder, (my son included) because it makes them want to be notice , and will thank you later compare the ones ended up doing nothing with the sports talent they been given. Thanks for the blog. please post to other blogs.

After reading several posts and different news papers, I’ve concluded that Murray’s sports section has the worst coverage in comparison to for example the LB press, Daily news, Etc.. Just read the other papers!

Got a feeling we are going to see some great upsets this weekend.

Over in the OC there was a big upset last night. Orange Lutheran was knocked off by Servite. And this was an O LU team that demolished Los Al.

My upsets of the weekend are El Rancho taking down La Serna and St. Paul beating Loyola.

OK…so I was wrong on the LS – ER game. However, there were quite a few upsets tonight. Cal HI taking down Santa Fe, La Salle whipping Cantwell, Diamond Ranch beating Los Altos, Amat beating St. Francis and in the OC, Santa Margarita getting by Mater Dei.

That is why they play the game!

  • El Rancho

Im sorry we let you down scj, but someone over at ER, doesnt put in David Moriel at QB until the second half when we are already down 17-0. Its as simple as this, put Moriel at QB, Paez at TB, Martin Mokay at FB, run the shit out of that football, dont throw any passes, and we will win some games. La Serna was lucky that ER only showed up to play in the second half, the #2 team in the division, I dont think so. Tonight was the first night our backs didnt cough up the rock, but our QB sure did throw a handful of interceptions. Bottom line, we keep shooting ourselves in the foot and turning the ball over multiple times a game, if we keep that up we will not win a game.

scj- servite beating lutheran is NOT an upset-if you follow football you know that servite is one of the top ranked teams in the division and had lost 2 games one was to Edison-i was at the servite-lutheran game and it was one of the best high school games ive seen!

I do follow HS football and that is why I felt the O Lu game was an upset. O Lu was a much higher ranked team than Servite in D1, was undefeated and had already beat a top ranked D1 team in Los Alamitos. Servite had lost 2 games, including one to Santiago of Corona (a game they should of won).

Granted, Servite had higher expectations coming into the season with all the hype , Galippo, Shumate and Khalil are getting.

Any chance of all 4 teams from the Trinity going to the playoffs? (top 2 teams in the league and 2 at large)?
