Who’s going to advance, and why

Nine area high school teams began the CIF-SS divisional football playoffs Friday.

We have to say goodby to three — La Mirada, La Serna and Whittier, but six schools remain in the hunt.
SANTA FE at home against Alhambra
CALIFORNIA at home against LA HABRA
SCHURR at home against Westminster
WHITTIER CHRISTIAN at home against Saddleback Valley Christian
ST. PAUL on the road at Mira Costa.

Who’s got the best chance to advance?
And why??

In my prediction, of course the Chiefs will win, they fix grades, recruit, have coaches drive all up and down the 605 to get the players they need.
Too bad it hasn’t ever materialized into a CIF Championship!

Just my thoughts…don’t take it personal people, it’s just a game.

    * – Indicates what I think the game of the week is.
Bold – Indicates my projection of the winning team.

    Santa Fe v Alhambra
Well…Santa Fe defeated Pioneer, Alhambra didn’t. Despite Alhambra’s dominating performance during the first round, the Chieftains have the right defense to contain the Moors.
    SFHS 28 – AHS 10

    *California v La Habra
Finally, the game that many bloggers from weeks leading up to this one have disputed about, the result on this one should hopefully shut either side up about league glory..a proven Del Rio League team going head to head against a fierce juggernaut in La Habra. The Condors would have been the DRL Champs if not for the ineligibility that forced Cal Hi to forfeit their prior victories, including their win vs the Chieftains. La Habra has been solid throughout the season and with a close nail-biter loss vs Troy, look unfazed on their road to a championship. Two great teams on a collision and only one will walk away. Grigsby will need to be on the top of his game, if he even plays on his injury and it’ll still be tough with the Highlanders in top form. It should be a close one. Best of luck to both teams.
    CHS 28 – LHHS 31

    Schurr v Westminster
Westminster had a tougher time vs Whittier than most would have thought, expect Schurr to give them the same treatment and possibly more. But it should be a balanced game for the first half, then in the second, either team will just run a bit with it. Maybe someone more familiar with either team can give better detail and insight on this one.
    SHS 31 – WHS 17

Whittier Christian v Saddleback Valley Christian
Camarillo is the X factor without any doubt. The Heralds have plenty of offensive weapons and support. Saddleback looks to be an all-around team that is capable of stopping Esteban, but then again…evertyone thought the Cardinals were too.
    WCHS 42 – SVCHS 13

    St. Paul v Mira Costa
Both teams on paper looks even…St. Paul has had an unforgiving rigorous schedule, not to mention the departure of a key player..yet the Swordsmen still stand and are fighting in the second round of the playoffs. Mira Costa has a determined team to play against and it should be an interesting game.
    SPHS 21 – MCHS 17

Best of luck to everyone involved and have a great game!

    OK…here is how I see it…

Santa Fe/Alhambra – Santa Fe is still Santa Fe and will beat Alhambra. Del Rio’s best chance to advance.

CalHi/La Habra – The Highlanders are one of the top teams in the SE Division. While CalHi has had a fine year they are no match for LH’s weapons. It’ll be closer than expected but LH all the way.

Schurr/Westminster – which Schurr shows up? Westminster by at least 10 points.

WC/SVC – Camarillo left, Camarillo right, Camarillo up the middle. WC in a walk. WC needs to start playing in a higher division. I don’t buy this “we are a small school” stuff. Your program won’t be taken seriously until you upgrade your schedule. Just ask La Serna.

St. Paul/Mira Costa – like you have to ask whom I’m going to pick here? St. Paul of course. Those gritty little Swordsmen are going to do it again. I’ll give MC credit, they got beat by 2 decent D1 teams and some decent D3 teams but they lost to Redondo by over 30 points. SP beat Redondo by 42. It’ll be a close game.

It is great to see our area so well represented.

    Sf vs. Alhambra
SF will have their hands full with a very explosive Alhambra offense. I am pulling for the Chiefs, but this game could go either way.
    Cal vs. LH
    Will Grigsby play?
Without him, I think LH will win big. If Grigsby can play effectively, Cal might make it close.
    Schurr vs Westminster.
I like Schurr in this game vs an overated Westminster team.
    WC vs. SVC
I will take WC in this game, too much Camarillo.
    S.P. vs Mira Costa
I like St. Pauls defense and think they will win a close one vs. Mira Costa.

  • >>WHATEVER IT TAKES<<

I THINK WHEN YOU HAVE HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE ITS A GOOD THING BECAUSE HOME TEAMS LOVE TO PLAY IN FRONT OF THERE CROWD!ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN ITS PLAYOOFS THE ATMOSPHERES CHANGE SOME TEAMS DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO WHEN THEY FACE ADVERSITY….SO ITS PUT UP OR SHUT UP THIS WEEK….

SCHURR OVER WESTMINSTER(28-7) SCHURR HAS BEEN THROUGH THIS KIND OF ADVERSITY AND AFTER FRIDAY I THINK THEY GOT WHAT IT TAKES TO MOVE ON TO THE 3RD…..

LA HABRA OVER CAL(21- 14) IF NICK IS OUT WITH AN ANKLE INJURY ITS GONNA BE TOUGH FOR CAL!!!

TROY OVER SADDLEBACK(34-21) STOP TROYS RUN!!! PUT 7 MAN AT THE LINB SHUT COLEMAN DOWN!!!

La habra will win big, with or without Grigsby

  • el rancho

Alhambra doesnt have what it takes? Good luck with that one, this is one of the few teams that will have someone just as good as Romeo Pellum on the field, Michigan bound Zion Babb is very dangerous, the RB Brown and their QB were injured against Pioneer, this will be a very difficult game for Santa Fe.

yeah, fix this page, I can’t see the comments.

Chiefs will win with their solid defense and the weapons they have on offense, alot of those kids who playing now have had PARENTS who played with Mahlstede before and are proud to have their kids do the same!(Santana,Molina,Lozano)and lot who are underclassmen, if we have recuited we would have had a few CIF titles by now!!

  • mayflrglry

  • El Rancho

Obviously he must be doing something right if he has an offer from one of the best College Football programs in the land. You cannot hit what you cannot catch.

  • F. D. Cervantes

Im not too concerned for most games played this Friday since I live out of state, however, my brother plays for Cal High. I think the drive these men have to come up from the taking of 3 games has proved they have the desire to win.
Lets not fool eachother, you play football to win. And this team has done it. Talent is all over this team, it’s just a matter of playing the right talent at the right position.
Like I said previously, I know what its like to be part of a 3-peat CIF program at Paramount years ago, and this team has the skills to get the job done.
Not taking away from a worthy opponent of La Habra which really has what it takes, it will be a good game and a lot closer than people think.
In the end, Cal will be victorious, 24-21 over La Habra.
    Go Condors!

  • The Parent

I hope Cal gets past La Habra. They have talent on the team that can do the job. Drew Harris has improved alot since I saw him during spring-summer training. His arm is not bad, he just needs to anticipate a little sooner. Because of his increased improvement in so little time i think he can lead the team to victory. Along with Grigsby, Taylor, Juarez, Matt Urquiza, Navarro, Munoz, McCrory, Jasper Meza. ..etc. I do feel That Ancich needs to utilize everyone in this particular game though. Dont just use the same 2-3 players on every play. We beat Santa Fe because we ran an offense they didn’t see on their scout tape. They were prepared to stop Grigsby and thought they only had to worry about one other running back as a lead blocker but as soon as there were 3 in the backfield, the ball move forward with ease. Cal never even practiced that type of offensive formation.
I hope the coaches at Cal take this into consideration because La Habra is going to try to stop Grigsby every down. USE EVERYONE COACH! HAVE THEM CONFUSED FROM THE GET GO! MUCH LUCK….GO CONDORS!

  • La Serna AND Cal High parent

Just wanted to say Good Luck to both Cal High and Santa Fe this Friday!
The family & I will be at the Cal High game cheering them on against La Habra, Drew Harris, play hard and play smart! Also, we hope to see Grisby suited up and everyone playing to their full ability.
    Good Luck to All!

  • highlanderfan

With all of the talk about Grigsby and Camarillo,(and deservedly so). LH’s Jason Davis has put together a great season himself, 1157 yards 7.4 per carry and 11 TD’s,
    in a pass oriented offense.

  • Chieftain Alumni

El Ranchoyou should have posted that you cant hit those who cant make the grade?. How can someone who is on his way to a college the caliber of Michigan find himself ineligible and costing his teammates the possibility of advancing in the playoffs. I guess the fan wasnt to far off the mark after all.

  • El Rancho

Yes I should have put that, but I had no clue he would be ineligible, that was one big matchup i was really looking forward too, its to bad it never came true.

  • Football and Cheer Mom@ SFHS

Well all I can say is WAY TO GO SANTA FE!!!! The Curse is over and there is no way SF is going to let the ship and the ring get away now!!! The best part is the defense just keeps getting better every week!! The guys Broght it against TROY and I just hope you can BEAT Schurr because you have earned this and deserve the RED patch and the RING so MANNY, MARCUS,EDDIE,ANGEL,ROMEO,VICTOR,JOJO,SANTANA and all the Rest of you boys “GO GET THAT RING!!!”
