Column: Honest, this mechanic shop is closing after 56 years

Independent shop Bill’s Auto Service could no longer compete in a changing world. Two brothers have operated the shop that was founded by their father in 1963. I write about them for Friday’s column. Above, Brian and John Brew in their shop Tuesday.

There is unfortunately so much truth to the subject of how dealers treat their customers compared to honest shops. I fled my dealer’s shop about four years ago because it “found” a problem that would cost over $900 to fix–I had gone in only for a routine oil change.

I go to an independent shop myself, not having much faith in dealerships. As the brothers told me, at a dealership you don’t even get to talk to the actual mechanic, just the report writer.
