Upland edges Rancho Cucamonga 3-2 in battle finale

The Upland Highlanders pushed across three runs in the fourth and that held up for a 3-2 win over Rancho Cucamonga in the final game of the Battle of the Baseline Saturday night at LoanMart Field.

The win means the Higlanders (15-9, 7-6) head into the last week of play tied for third with Los Osos but just one game behind leaders Chino Hills and Etiwanda.

Senior right-hander Jeff Kross went the distance on the mound, giving up just four hits and striking out five. Both the runs he allowed in the sixth were unearned.

Kross and Grant Ponder singled to start the fourth. Junior Fregoso then hit a sacrifice fly scoring Kross. Another sacrifice fly, this one by Ryan Almondinger, drove home Ponder. The third run of the contest came home on a single by Ryan Rodriguez.

Upland wraps up the season with two games against Etiwanda so it controls its own fate.

Rancho Cucamonga’s last two games are against Damien which is fighting for a playoff berth as well.
