Montclair girls tennis quietly having another solid season

The Montclair girls tennis team is off to an 8-1 start and ranked No. 2 in Division 5. The Cavaliers won the Mt. Baldy League two years ago for the first time in 25 years and are bidding to do the same again this season.

Coach Doc Martin is pleased with his team’s progress. The school doesn’t traditionally get a lot of players with club or competitive backgrounds before they get to the high school level.

“This is a nice group of girls with good senior leaders,” Martin said. “They have bought in to what we’re trying to do and we’re doing pretty well.”

Senior Jazmyn Sandoval is the top singles player with junior Emily Lam playing at No. 2. martin is working on solidifying the rest of the singles lineup.

The sixth-year coach said the strength of the team is its doubles play with three quality teams. Those teams are seniors Sammy Valencia and Trish Montemayor at No. 1, juniors Vy Nguyen and Phi-Phi Do at No. 2 and sophomore Jereena Montemayor and junior Jenny Vu at No. 3.

The Cavaliers are 8-1 the lone loss to Alta Loma with whom they have split this season. Those two teams will play a third time on Oct. 13 which will likely decide the league title. Alta Loma has also had a solid season and is ranked No. 3 in the same division.

Montclair will play against Chaffey today.
