Race for playoff spots in Hacienda League coming to end

All eyes will be focused on the scoreboards Friday night as high school football teams finish out the regular season. Playoff berths are on the line in many leagues with the race in the Hacienda League a compelling as ever.

The only sure thing is that Charter Oak (8-1, 4-0), which is the top-ranked team in the Central Division, is the league champion. Everything else is up in the air.

Heading into Friday’s play Chino (7-2, 2-2), Diamond Ranch (6-3, 2-2), Los Altos (5-2, 2-2) and West Covina (4-5, 2-2) are tied for second with Walnut (1-8, 0-4) bringing up the rear.

Diamond Ranch and Los Altos play each other so someone will take another loss. West Covina will be playing Charter Oak and Chino gets Walnut.

So the most likely scenario is Chino wins to move to 3-2, along with the winner of Diamond-Ranch-Los Altos. Chino has the head-to-head on both those teams so it would be the No. 2 seed, with the Diamond Ranch-Los Altos winner being the No. 3.

But it is seldom that easy. What would throw everything upside down would be for West Covina to upset Charter Oak which would make for a three-way tie for second (assuming Chino doesn’t lose to Walnut).

A coin flip would then factor in somehow.

Let the fun begin.
