The party’s over at Amat …

As many of you know, Bishop Amat has arguably the best tailgating scene in SoCal high school football. … make that HAD arguably the best tailgating scene in SoCal high school football.

The school has decided to disallow tailgating on school property before games for the upcoming season after determining that things were getting a bit out of control. No word on whether the tailgating ban will last beyond this season.

Obviously, this is a big blow to the Amat football experience. Fans were notorious for showing up hours before kickoff and getting the weekend party started right. I don’t know how Freddie’s gonna take this.

  • reality

To many people slipping booze into their red cups. Odds are some drunk from a tailgating party will do something and make the school liable. Insurance company forced the issue. It was inevitable.

    • Real talk

      After how many years?

      • reality

With so many people downing their 12 packs of Natural Lite the (fans?) were relieving themselves in the stands. Is that how one roots on Amat football?

        • Real talk

What?! I didn’t know that… Where did you get that info?

  • In the crowd

This decision could not have come down at the worst time. BA football is in for one of those magical years. Not only do they need to restore tailgating but they also need to put back in the double bleachers in the student body section. Doesn’t BA administration know how much $$ can be made this year with 6 home games on schedule? Not to mention all the hype the BA football team is already getting by being ranked so high nationally and in the state of CA. Huge mistake!!!

  • AramT

This prompts me to ask: Does Amat lose some of its home-field advantage now? Fans come in from the parties ready to go, if you know what I mean. I’m expecting the first quarter to be much more subdued. Crowd won’t be so crazy. Or maybe it will.

I know this sucks for Amat fans, but you’ll just have to watch the game sober like the rest of us.

    • Real talk

Amat fans stay ready soooo they ain’t got to get ready… If you know what I mean.

    • AMAT 73

      Aram,
Don’t think it will have much effect on the home field advantage . As a matter of fact maybe the stands will be full at opening kick off instead of filling up as the fires go out in the parking lot . The majority of the fans come in at game time and party in the stands , it’s just a matter of how you conduct yourself .By the way this went into effect at the end of last season .

      • GO AMAT

        Who cares. GO BIG BLUE

    • Eric

My experience at the tailgating at AMAT games is that after the games are over, the kids hang out on campus, AT SCHOOL, which takes away the burden of may groups of kids going to different public places to hang out and there are no parents towatch over them. This is such an awful thing to happen at Amat. I do not always agree with how they do things at school but this was one of the best things to happen.
It is going to be inevitable that these kids are going to be hanging out at a hamburger stand and the Greasers and the Cruisers from different schools are going to meet up and rumble. But it wont be like Happy Days, some idiot is going to either pull a gun, knife or run somebody over with a car.
I am already feeling bad for the parents that are going to have to experience this.

      • reality

Well if its as bad as you say then advise all Amat parents to keep their kids chained up on Friday nights and forget football altogether. Watchout for the Cholo’s and the Pachuco’s not to mention the Low Riders and the Zoot Suitors.

    • GO AMAT

      Blah blah blah

  • Don

Speaking of tailgating . . . did you realize it took freddie almost seven minutes to add this content to the bhss site? Dude is slippin’.

I suspect that some middle ground will be reached before all is said and done. Public policy regarding no alcohol like at Damien and St. Paul. Probably enforced the same way, too. Kind of sad, almost a passing of the torch . . . a votive candle inside a red Solo cup.

    • AramT

I predicted to my girlfriend that it would be hijacked and on his site within 3 minutes of my Tweet. Close.

      #OriginalContent

      • Guess again

How did Caitlyn respond when you made that prediction to her?

  • Beer Goggles

While inconvienent, I’m sure Tecate nation is going to find a way to exist.

  • Jefe

That blows for Amat fans. I know a lot of folks who won’t be happy about this.

    • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

May have won the battle but not the war!!!!

  • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

I guess that means no more alcohol at the extravaganza, chalk talk, old timers cooking the weenies. It was probably the sour puss booster prez and her puppet side kick.

  • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

Ms Oswald should step in…. She runs the school anyway.

  • Pac5fan

Amat tailgating are usually self policed and very civilized when my kids attended there (1998 – 2013), I have never witnessed any unruly acts or civil disobedience, As a matter of fact, we always would invite the opposing team crowds to join us in the festivities. I understand there is always a risk of outsiders spoiling the fun for everyone, but the tailgating crowds have always been a very classy group of people. It’s sad to see such rich traditions such as this, 50/50 raffles disappear. What’s next, the In and Out burger truck?

  • Jefe

I think some sort of compromise needs to be made. This is crazy.

    • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

      Next year Jefe…

  • tanksolot

What’s next, no whistling in the bleachers after a score, Int, etc?
They must need more income from the food sold inside. Shame.

  • Don

So what I surmise is those desiring a fall glow at Keifer will have to resort to a surreptitious snort.

    Like everyone else.

And by the way, reality, those are Bud Lights, not Natural Lights. And yeah, to all of the holier than thou crowd, like Commander Cody said, “Everyone’s Doing It”. Only difference is that everyone else does is with a re-tasked slurpee cup.

You think the ‘beep beep boys’ at C O games aren’t tuning up out front before games? . I don’t know how the new District Field parking lot will play out yet, but in the past, whole families have made mortgage payments from recycling the aluminum cans picked up there over a fall weekend. Further east Saint faithful sometime seek a little fortification out near the Sportsplex and I have been told that there remain some Bonita fans who think Barney and Andy don’t know what they are sneaking in with those cans of Squirt 😉

As already mentioned, Damien proscribes alcohol from their tailgate fun but I betcha anyone in the Senior Parking Lot desiring a cold one with his pizza won’t be disappointed. And St. Paul has banned booze officially since like forever but if you asked the little fella running that 7 eleven on Carmenita he’d tell you that football Fridays are his best nights of the year. Whole truckloads of Bud Light have been sold through that store when Amat visits the pit.

So I predict what will finally happen is a restricted, (on paper), no booze allowed, (on paper), pay to play deal similar to Damien’s and a trend towards sneaky imbibing like they do everywhere else.

    • AramT

Great post! You forgot to mention the weed aroma at Rio Hondo Prep games. Just kinda walk across the street at halftime and people are smoking the same grass they sit on during games.

      • Don

Well yeah, cuz they Kare . . . but I guess everyone has their share of shenanigans and close enough scrutiny could make anyone look like, well, anyone else.

    • Colt74

In all seriousness of all the pregame tailgaters that I have had the privileged to attend over the years BA were/are probably the classiest. San Dimas’s are not too shabby either.

      • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

        AMEM!!!

    • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

Don’t forget the stacks of alcohol they have at the extravaganza and the chalk talk every Tuesday night… Everyone does it. We just have some uptity tradition is everything people running the school. Well let me tell you that way back when they were tailgating on the grass there was alcohol involved. Nobody got hurt nobody… The only thing hurt was/ is the fact that these people were not invited… Bet there children came over and ate with all the rest. Don’t worry Amat fans tailgating will be back next year.

    • tanksolot

Don, the Beep-Beep crew got tossed from the Charger’s parking lot a couple of seasons ago. We do our pre-game across the street at the park now. Got to respect the rules about tobacco and alc on the school grounds. Sad for BA. They really took the tailgating to the next level.
You should come join us for a Marg-beer-ita and a smoke sometime.

      • Don

Thanks a lot, tanksalot for the offer and the update. I filled a blue cup or two at the end of Tudor Street in the olden days. Heck, even knew where the long time Pony prez had his blender stashed in the snack bar, (and it wasn’t there to make kale smoothies). Times have changed though, and my pomegranate sized prostate keeps me from enjoying a barley beverage or two if I want to sit still through an entire football game.

Good knowing the beep beep boys are still beeping though; always enjoyed watching Millie Santiago roll her eyes when they started up.

  • SheaInIrving

We all know what this is about! Anyone who comes in here and spouts nonsense about “tradition” and “fun” is blind. This is entirely, 100% about stupid ass, out of control, entitled Amat parents who BOOZE it up beforehand and then get out of control during the games! And as was previously mentioned, they are increasingly giving this alcohol to MINORS!!!

Someone earlier implied that “some” parents get out of control and that the school administration should do something about it. Let me address this garbage. A) have you ever been out to these tailgates? Have you walked around and paid attention? I would estimate that probably 75-80% of people are boozing! That’s not “some”, that’s most! B) with that said, rather than police those 75%, they shut the whole thing down. I, for one, think it’s a great idea. Let’s get back to making Friday nights less about getting tanked and more about…oh I don’t know…OUR KIDS and FOOTBALL!!!

  • SheaInIrving

No, they don’t. That’s the myth. For all and tailgating are great at the pro level. maybe the college level. But there are TEENS!!! This is HIGH SCHOOL!! This is the problem with Amat. They think Lancer football is a damn pro sport. It’s not!!! It’s kids!!!!!!! Nothing connected to teenagers should have anything to do with booze!

    • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

I guess you grew up in a closet huh bubble boy??

    • 12th man

Who said anything about booze? Even the local pop Warner teams BBQ hot dogs & hamburgers with cold refreshing drinks not involving alcohol before the games.. Tailgating has been going on for years even at the high school level..

    • truth teller

Nothing has happened. the TEENS have been fine. This makes no sense to allow a handful of people to ruin TRADITION for several hundreds! Especially for a school that is so high on tradition. You’re also ruining it for those exact TEENS that you speak about. They all get to socialize and jus hang out with each other and the players as well. The players come out after the game and get to eat like everyone else. I’m sure that when you were in high school, there was some place that everybody went to after games. This way it’s right at home and the kids don’t have to go to In n Out and HOPE they get a seat or that they all fit or that they all can even go. This is way to harsh and bigger than whoever made this decision! And to do it to THIS class that has brought so much attention back to Amat is a shame!! They are taking away memories for these TEENS!!

  • reality

How about a substitute event before the games? Like a big Alcohol Anonymous meeting in the parking lot before the games. It should be well attended.

  • jcaz

This is the second major deduction they’ve made at Kiefer. First it was the game day raffles (where the prize was often over a thousand enchiladas). Now they’re excommunicated the tail gate party’s where great hamburgers were said to have been created. What’s next on their list I ask ? Kettle Korn ???

  • GO AMAT

Blah blah blah.alll you Amat lovers (haters) will always love us. Too bad you cant send your kid to Amat id what your upset about
.. Our boys will show you who they are out on that field not at a tailgate or 50/50 event…get ready EVERYONE here we come. Love us or hate us..WE WILL ALLWAYS BE AMAT LANCERS!!! Have fun at our games

    • Proud Amat Alum

I don’t think you get what the real ” Amat family’ is about. You probably got your student in the school and you feel the need to show off about it? That’s not what we want to get across. We’ve got a phenomenal group of young men. We want to win and we will Everyone knows Amat is good. Let’s ease off on the pressure you put on these young men. There are fans that just choose not to send their kids to Amat for one reason or another. We want everyone’s support, not envy

  • Proud Amat Alum

I’m not sure I understand what you are trying to say. Difficult time reading your typing? None the less, I was just saying is, yes this is a great group of young men. We are lucky to have so much talent. We do have more support than schools in our area. I’ve been to other high school football games and attendance does not compare. Many other schools come and watch our games because they have friends on the team. All of these athletes that have played with or against these boys come and support. They are all great kids. The “envy” I was referring to was your comment about someone wishing they could have sent their kid to Amat. That’s not how someone who went there would put it, nor would I hope an Amat parent would. Let’s get on with the season, let the coaches put the pressure on them and the discipline. Let focus on winning, not tailgating, not parents trying to find a place to drink and say it’s for the team, etc… Some people messed it up for others, if we get it back, that’s great, if not that’s ok too. It really does not affect how the team plays. Let’s enjoy the season and watch these Amat Lancers win! Glad to hear you are a true Amat fan.
