Apropos of nothing, the current NFL new season promo that ran today, the one with Gronkowski, has a bunch of kids from the La Habra Pop Warner organization in it. Knew quite a few kids who played there, not to mention a couple of daddies who, ahem, coached.

  • WCDan

I think La Mirada is too high, I would put them below West Co and La Serna.

    • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

Hey Dan, its been a while… Hows it going my man??

      • WCDan

Pretty good, thanks for asking and good luck to your mighty men in blue, if they can get healthy they can be a force to be reckoned in the Pac 5. Over here at West Co even though we lost I thought the game was pretty exciting, liked how our boys kept battling hard throughout the game, Colony was no slouch, last seasons CIF champs in our division and they look like they could be a contender for the division once again, with that said West Co had their chances for the win but turned the ball over on key drives, I think they had 5 turnovers. I like how WC is mixing it up more on offense, makes us less predictable, still a lot of improvement has to be made, but I like the new flexibility on offense. I also liked the hard physical play on defense, although we softened up a little and looked a bit tired late in the game.

        • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

Oh yes turn overs can come back and kill… As well as time of poss. The defense worked their tails off, but in the end they were just tired and MD wore them down. We will get back on track this week with some good prep and great practice. Good luck to you guys this year.

        • AramT

          Dan,

Good to see you back in the fold! Another toughie for The WC on Friday. I think it’s gonna be a good one.

          • WCDan

Good to see you too Aram, yeah St. Francis is always tough, discipline, and well coached, WC will have their hands full Friday night, but it should be a tough game for St. Francis too, looking forward to another fun year.

  • MonkeyWrench

La Mirada continues to get respect day dont be deserving All da D1 talent over the last 3 years and how they play Coach should be worried about his job.

    • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

Can you have someone translate for you going forward?? I know this is a blog and all that, but you have to do a better job here… Now as for LM, they schedule the tough games in the preseason for a reason. It makes them better come regular season.

      • vegemighty

You have to work pretty hard to write that badly. I think for his day job, he is an art critic for The Atlantic.

      • Close but no cigar

Only problem is that it doesn’t make them better for when it really counts, the playoffs, which is where LM blows up every year.

      • Don

Little Johnny, as best I can tell, the translation is:

Our experience at LM was unsatisfactory as we found their performance did not reflect fairly that, which we were given to expect. Non starters were left on their own and if not highly sought after, referred to the local community college. We are not happy.

Hope that is of some help.

        • tanksolot

…or CO is going to kick the crap out of LM this Friday.

          • Don

I would not be surprised, nor would I be shocked to see the Mats enter Suburban League play at 0-4.

They DO have some BEEEG boys between the tackles, (scary to see meandering around Albertsons together), but probably can be had running off the bump (freebie for Dom, like he needs it). 😉

          • AMAT 73

            tanks,
After last Friday’s game I don’t think LM has any crap left in the tank !!!!

          • tanksolot

Kinda puts some pressure on CO to play well and win big. CO had lots and lots of penalties last Friday (no turnovers!), and we’ll be without Padilla for a questionable targeting call and rejection….well, maybe not that questionable. The poor guy’s helmet almost rolled all the way to the sideline.
Looking for a good game from BA too. Eliminate the turnovers and go fast. Friars are no chumps but we got this one.

          • AMAT 73

            tank,
Yup we had a few OC zebra specials on Friday also . We should have an excellent game on Friday . I’m looking for Hags to shore up the issues from Friday , and some of the LANCERS to get their feet back on the ground and get down to business . GO AMAT !!!!!!!!!! One other thing , RUN , RUN , RUN is what we need to do .

    • looker4

4 words. All show, no go! This should be La Miradas new logo on there
game time shirts. The videos they post on line during practice make them
look like beasts but come game time yikes. Totally different team. We
all know Bosco is good no doubt but all it took was a small adjustment
to overcome Boscos adjustment and they could not do it. Unreal. So much
talent and they can’t do anything with it. They promise those recruited
players the world and when they don’t cut the mustard they send them to
play JC ball at Cerritos. Parents it’s not the opportunity to play big
time college ball that should be enticing you or your child to play at
La Mirada, it should be the school, the teachers, the academic programs,
the programs getting your child ready for college. Too many of you jump
at the chance to wear that La Mirada jersey but it’s the heart of the
program beneath the jersey that will make the difference at the end of
the day. It’s too bad that you can’t measure a players heart. Talent you
can measure all day. Put a barrier infront of that player and what
happens? You sit him down for not running the correct play, what
happens? You discipline him for being late or a bad grade, what happens?
The best way you can bring up your child, in my opinion, is to allow
him to fail. Don’t run off to another program thinking it will be better. Let them stay with his school and teammates where he
belongs and not have him transfer out. They will learn more about
themselves in a situation where they fight for everything they earn. Now a days, it’s
all about the money, scholarship and hope that they will make it to a
big time school. What happens when they get to a D1 and every player is
fast, stronger and smarter. Time to go to Cerritos. Teach them how to
fight and overcome on there own before handing them a scholarship to a D1 that eventually they will come back home with. Can’t
measure the heart in a player. Talent is cheap. The recruiters should value more the backup player that does not give in to being a non starter. The player that won’t quit on you or the program or run from one school to another looking for the elite program to take him to the promise land. You would be better off staying at your high school, gutting it out every Friday with your friends that you grew up with and get recruited to play at Cerritos as the starting QB. At least this way you have all your high school memories and friends. Thanks a lot dad. Why to go.

    • reality

I dubbed them the Khardashians of High school football a few weeks ago. they can’t act worth a damn but boy do they have nice cabooses and will sell it if it gets them some air time.

  • Mean Joe Green

    Hey Aram,

I know people shoot these your way every time you put together one of these rankings, but I had to throw my hat into the ring. I know its not an exact science, but I think that when its all said and done, strength of schedule, wins and rankings should matter. So I revised your list by creating a formula that puts 50% weight on strength of schedule, 25% on ratings and 25% on wins (Schedule X .5) + (Rating X .25) + ((Wins X 10) X .25). This gives playing in upper divisions its proper due, without handing schools an automatic high ranking simply they lose to big dogs. It also forces teams like San Marino to step up its schedule if its going to be considered a top tier team.

    1. Bishop Amat – 55.5 Ranking
    2. La Mirada – 39.5
    3. La Habra – 33
    4. West Covina – 27.7
    5. La Serna – 26.9
    6. Charter Oak – 20.2
    7. Monrovia – 11.8
    8. El Rancho – 11.6
    9. Muir – 9
    10. South Hills – 6.8
    11. Diamond Ranch – 6
    12. Los Altos – 5.6
    13. Bonita – 5.2
    14. St. Paul – 3.7
    15. La Salle – 2.2
    16. La Canada – 2.1
    17. San Marino – (-)1.35
    18. El Monte – (-)3.6
    19. Montebello – (-)3.6
    20. Diamond Bar – (-)18

Top Teams that have not played
    Glendora
    St. Francis
    Northview
    Damien
    San Dimas

  • reality

A loss is a loss. Thinking you deserve credit for playing a tough team is stupid. No team O-1 shoud still be number #1. No team with a loss, (Amat, WC, Monrovia) did not lose to the Patriots, they lost to teams in their own DIVISIONS! Kick.em to the curb. Let them fight there way back. This ain’t horseshoes. Gimme a break with all the talk about nice losses. If you schedule a top team to play it is for the money and notoriety (LM) or that you feel your team can win. Otherwise why schedule? To get laughed at?

    • MoreKetchup

Not to be a homer here, but a loss isn’t just a loss. Sure, LM proved absolutely nothing and does not deserve to be held up in the rankings, but Amat and WC lost to tough teams in very close games and at least in WC’s case, he isn’t even calling them the best in their own league so it is not that large of a deal. Los Altos shouldn’t be credited for scheduling cake walk Baldwin Park. Besides, he is ranking teams overall, not how they are doing in their individual leagues. Yeah, Amat may not be the best in the Pac-5, but they would certainly beat every team in the top five 9 out of 10 times.

    • Don

With all due respect reality, a loss isn’t a loss other than
in a strictly objective sense, a sense that has little or nothing to do with any of the ratings, rankings, or rantings printed here or on any of the other blogs. Here we get opinion, rationalization, and usually, some defensiveness.

Having said that, I want to state that, IMEHO, Amat losing to Mater Dei by a Field Goal is nothing like La Mirada losing to SJB, (roughly the same quality team as MD), by nine touchdowns.

While I am at it, a win is not a win, either. La Habra’s 34 point victory over El Toro is lots more impressive than Charter Oaks 3 TD win over any Nevada team not named Centennial or Gorman. (Apologies to my Charger pals, you know I love you and BTW, say hi to Evan Williams for me.)

While I am at it, Bonita’s 47 point smoking of Schurr is way more compelling than San Marino’s 39 point rout of Arroyo. The wins by Northview and Los Altos, while nice, were nowhere near as impressive to me as La Serna’s one pointer over one of the better programs in San Diego.

While I’m at it, (offending everybody), when considering the WesCo – Colony contest, observers may want to consider that Colony, while still an impressive program, graduated about 70% of last season’s offensive output and about 8 of their 11 defensive starters.

A rose, is still a rose, however and, as the man says, a kiss is just a kiss.

      • tanksolot

Good points Don. Actually the Chargers win was a good one, but the real story was that nobody was killed in the heat.

      • Mean Joe Green

A loss is a loss only when you are comparing apples to apples. However the SGV Top 25 is throwing oranges, pears, peaches and plums into the rankings. I personally think that at the high school level parochial and private schools need to have their own rankings/division/leagues because of the limited resources of public high schools. At the college level all of that changes. State public schools can compete with the best when it comes to raising revenue for their schools. With that said, as long BA is a part of the list, they will always, I repeat, ALWAYS be ranked at the top of the list at the start of the season. As long as this list is not purely subjective (Aram needs to confirm that) then other schools can quickly rise to the top if BA doesn’t hold up.

  • MonkeyWrench

Bishop still be deserving to be number 1 right now. But da red flags are dare. I post before Arams thread dat the alarms be going off in da off season. As talented as this team is they could have just as many problems. The D will continue to miss Mac from a scheme standpoint and the tackling be horrible. Watch the first 2 plays on the highlight it be looking like 2 hand touch football. Teams will continue to run on those LBs.

    • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

      Que??
