Google is helping SpaceX bring high-speed Internet to the masses with a constellation of small satellites.

SpaceX announced in a blog post today that Google and Fidelity have invested $1 billion in the Hawthorne-based rocket maker. The investment gives SpaceX a $10 billion valuation, with Google and Fidelity owning a 10 percent stake in the company.

Musk hopes a network of low-flying satellites will be able to provide Internet speeds that rival land-line connections and one day provide a communication link between Earth and Mars, which Musk hopes to colonize.

Elon Musk is looking to build a test track for the Hyperloop, a futuristic high-speed transportation project that Musk outlined in a white paper 18 months ago.

He’s also trying to get students involved.

The SAE International is a student design competition for Formula 1-style race cars. It also began in Texas.

UCLA grad students have been studying the feasibility of the Hyperloop since last fall. But Musk is not directly involved with that project.

Elon Musk has a flare for stirring up interest in pretty much everything he does. Even the prospect of hiring a farmer is national news, given Musk’s dream to colonize Mars.

So when SpaceX announced it was hiring a farmer… well, it’s easy to jump to conclusions.

Of the 600+ acres that SpaceX leases from the city of McGregor and Texas A&M University, only about 127 are dedicated to rocket testing, according to the McLennan County Appraisal District, which oversees the area that includes SpaceX test site. The rest of the land is farmland that acts as a buffer for potential rocket explosions.

None of the land at the SpaceX test site is zoned for agricultural use, even though “farmers have been on that land for a number of years,” says McLennan agricultural appraiser Matt Davis.

SpaceX., which has not responded to questions about its farming program, may just want to have greater control over the farmland buffer around its test site.

According to Mike Farah, a real estate lawyer specialized in farm and ranch law, “it could be as simple as they have a lot of land and they are looking for someone to manage it.”

How Texas ranchers avoid property taxes

There is a loophole in the Texas tax code that allows ranch owners to pay taxes on agricultural production instead of on the value of the land.

That is, if your $20 million ranch only yielded $20,000 in alfalfa last year, you’re only paying taxes on that $20,000, rather than Texas’ higher-than-average property taxes on the full value of the land.

“You’re talking about a major, major economic boost,” Farah said.

Farah, who manages several high net-worth clients, said it is common practice to maintain some farm activities in order to avoid property taxes.

“It’s a very safe place to place many millions of dollars, have that property grow in value and not pay very high taxes to keep it,” Farah said. “There’s nothing shady about it.”

Calm down… it’s not what you’re thinking.

Farming may play an important role in the apocalyptic film Interstellar, about space explorers fleeing a dust-ravaged Earth, but it’s not necessarily true that SpaceX is investing in interplanetary farm research. At least, not yet.

SpaceX is looking to hire a farmer in Texas with 10 years experience in “row crop farming”, “preventative maintenance of John Deere agricultural equipment” and “able to climb ladders and work in tight spaces.”

According to Agriculture.com, SpaceX is likely dedicating some of its land in central Texas to agriculture in order to attain tax-exemptions.

Elon Musk has made no secret of his plans to colonize Mars. SpaceX may one day take Musk to the Red Planet, so it stands to reason that he would want to have something eat once he gets there. A company spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

SpaceX delivered the first fresh food production system to the International Space Station earlier this year.

The job posting comes just days before NASA’s first test flight of its deep-space Orion capsule that could, one day, take the first humans to Mars.

A team of UCLA architecture students are spending the entire school year researching the Hyperloop, a futuristic transportation tube that promises to blast pods between San Francisco and Los Angeles at 760 mph.

The Hyperloop is the brain child of Tesla CEO and SpaceX founder Elon Musk, who released early design plans for the Hyperloop last year in reaction to the California High Speed Rail project, which Musk called too slow and too expensive.

Since Musk is so busy building sexy electric cars and low-cost spaceships, he hopes someone else will take up the task of providing California with cutting-edge bullet train technology.

UCLA Architecture and Urban Design school has taken up the challenge by creating a one-year research program, called SUPRASTUDIO, to work out the logistics of constructing a perfectly straight, elevated, vacuum tube between California’s largest urban areas.

The students are building a life-size prototype of a Hyperloop pod as well as a miniature vacuum tube system similar to the old mail delivery pods used in newsrooms and corporate buildings in the mid-20th century.

One of the biggest challenges will be consumer buy in, since travelling at supersonic speeds inside a vacuum tube might give some potential passengers pause — or lose their lunch. Most of the 25 students in the program are Chinese, with only two Americans enrolled.
All of them are Elon Musk fans, one student said.

The UCLA program is funded in part by Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, a crowd-funded project dedicated to making the Hyperloop concept a reality. The company, launched with help from the El Segundo-based JumpStartFund.com, was initially run by former director of mission operations for SpaceX, Dr. Marco Villa, and Patricia Galloway, former president of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
