Media savvy Bill Zernickow always chooses his words carefully: “They’ve (Covina) got some magic right now. They play well together. We just look forward to being on the same field with them and seeing if we’re good enough to beat them.”

Right said Fred: Now I’m waiting on Colts coach Darryl Thomas to say they put their pants on one leg at a time like the Saints ….

By Aram Tolegian
Besides Covina’s parents, there probably was no bigger group of fans rooting for the Colts to beat Baldwin Park than that of San Dimas. After losing to Baldwin Park two weeks earlier, the Saints needed a Covina win to get back in the league championship race. They got it, and that sets the stage for next week’s game against the Colts … assuming Covina doesn’t get upset by Pomona this week. (to continue click thread)

“It was nice,” Saints coach Bill Zernickow said of Covina’s win over Baldwin Park.

San Dimas has a bye this week and the Saints will get yet another chance to scout Covina, but Zernickow has seen enough to know his team will have its hands full in two weeks.

“They’ve got some magic right now,” Zernickow said of the Colts. “They play well together. We just look forward to being on the same field with them and seeing if we’re good enough to beat them.”

It’s interesting to note how both of our biggest opponents this season have a bye week just before our meetings. On the flip side we have 2 weeks to get ready for round 1. We just need to take care of business 1 week at a time. I know the players are fired up and would like nothing more than to be the VVL’s lone champion and spoilers. This week is our Homecoming and we’re proud to have Jim Hanifan be our Honorary Captain. GO COLTS!

Hey Zernickow, we havent forgotten that u guys ran it up on us last year. See u next Friday. I hope for u guys it was worth it.. Payback is a mutha..

The bonita vs west co game along with the Covina vs San Dimas are the most interesting games in the valley. Bonita is rolling, but so is west co. Bonita will be on the road. That is going to be a test. Its hard to say who is going to win. I do think west co is going to have to throw this game. Bonita will stack the box. For West Covina, they will finally play a team who will be physical with them up front. They have not played a game to truly test them. Friday its for all the marbles, all the swagg, The #1 seed. I think Bonita Wins. They to me are a more balanced.

San Dimas took one on the chin from Baldwin Park, but they stil have a team good enough to go to title game. Covina has the edge with beating bp, but San Dimas has been there before, and know how to win big games. If they lose and are 3rd place in league, they will not lose much. They would have to play tough first round game. Now imagine this a 7-1 Covina is rolling… They have been on a emotional roller coaster all year.Lets say they lose to San Dimas, then they lose the flip and get the 3rd place seed in Playoffs. Not only will be going into the playoffs with a loss, they will be facing a tough first round oppenent, like Azusa. That would be going from beating West Co to somewhat collapsing. They begin to question if they are a elite team. Both teams are playing for alot. Covina has alot more to lose. In order for them to win it all, they are going to need get a great seed that effects their playoff Draw, and they are going to need momentum. San Dimas, is just happy to be in the situation to tie in league. I think if they would go in as a 3 seed, they still can bounce back. just my take, but I got San Dimas to tie things up in the valle vista.

    Observation,
…but San Dimas has been there before, and know how to win big games.

We’ve been there too. Everyone has the know how to win big games. Right now Covina has the momentum and the heart to accomplish their goals. Come Nov. 5th when the game clock reaches 00:00 I think people will believe what we have believed all along.Be true to the shoe!

  • Colt74

“They (Covina) have been on a emotional roller coaster all year.”

What theme park have you been at? We’ve been on the top of the coaster all year…in the front car…with our hands up…and enjoying the ride!

  • Living legend

First off the colts are not worried about the aints, they need to
focus on this week alone.. Second thing don’t think for a second Covina believes any of that nonsense that Billy-boy is talking they know he does not respect them, evident by Billy running a fake punt up 35-0 with 3 mins left in the game.

  • Truth

The fact is the Colts don’t like the Saints and the Saints don’t like the Colts. It is going to be bloody. The coaching staffs do not like each other. Respect each other….they respect each other but that is it. Can’t wait for that game. Both teams better be prepared.

  • run-upper

    c-town,
SD has not forgotten when you ran up the score on US 05-06, 55-7!!!

  • Wingin it

You know, some guys on here are very bitter with a fake punt but to be perfectly honest payback is best served in the fact San Dimas won the ring last year. I can still remember Z’s first years when Covina would come in with Mc D and slaughter the saints and pour it on with zero inclination. Z kept his mouth shut and just decided to get better and hope to never be put in that situation again. Just because a fake was ran why the heck was there no coaching against such an easy play if you have a sound program. Sure theres talent from top to bottom in the program of C-Town but you guys have never won a big game and thats coaching. So to summize my theme, You guys pointing fingers cut it out, its not polite.

  • Colt74

I for one don’t see a problem with running up the score. It’s a game. A contest. Take the field and take your chances. If you don’t like having the score ran up on you..forfeit the game and start a chess club. My belief and I will not argue that with anyone.

And for the record Covina 5 VS San Dimas 4 in the modern era. Big games… I bet if you compare CIF Championships you’d see how many big games we’ve been in verses how many SD has been in. Since you brought up your championship last year ( history ) I thought I’d bring up ours.

Nov 5th ends all the talk. May the best team win.

  • http://www.insidesocal.com/sgvfootball Aram

I covered both the 05-06 games. The 05 game I don’t remember any running it up. It was at San Dimas. You have to remember the kind of offense Covina ran. I remember talking to Coach Zernickow after the game and he pretty much predicted the future. I don’t remember it word for word, but he vowed that San Dimas would be the one handing out beatdowns in the coming years and he was right.

Anyway, the 06 game was billed as Barbone vs. McDonough. It wasn’t close though. Covina was the better overall team and had too much speed.

I never knew both staffs don’t like each other. I’m sure it’s more a competitive thing than anything else. Both staffs are filled with class acts.

Should be an awesome renewal next week.

  • SD

Well im just going to say Covina and San Dimas HATE EACHOTHER you say COvina – Northview no its COVINA – SAN DIMAS. San Dimas kids HATE BILLY… He left San Dimas for COVINA there is a hate there watch we are gonna get BILLY!!

  • Class of’ ’41′

To Colt74: The only time fans do not care about running up the score,is during professional NFL.
Men players in professional sports are adults. They are there to win! High school is different.Beside cramming your head in the classroom to learn something about life, on the football field, you are taught different perspective of one’e empirical observation; using deductive or inductive logic. We are taugh, that in an organized encounter, there are rules and regulations. If an accepted enforcer by both parties, is permitted to administer a penalty for an infraction, there are subjected consequences to be dealt with.
When Coach Hagerty instructed his player to take a knee, rather than running up the score. What did we learn from the coach’s action you may ask?
When the contest is over, no need to rub it in! What a class act!!!

  • Living Legend

Winging It, really you bring up the Mc D years?!?!?!?! he was out by the end of the third quarter, if he would have stayed in it would have been 100 and thats the truth. Every one knows Billy Z has very little class, Aram he(Billy Z) was taking a stab in the dark cause you and I both now if they would have played in the same division Mc D played in SD would have been one and done.

Never won a big game? Covina beat a team this year that would have smack any of the teams you have played in the past two years. Or the fact that Covina has more CIF titles then you may account for something as well also.

  • Colt74

    Class of 41,
What your coach or any coach chooses to do is their decision. It’s funny that in the 8 years that I played football I never heard the term ” RUNNING UP THE SCORE “. I guess that term came along in the politically correct version of life that came along after my schooling. It probably came along about the same time as not giving out grades in school ( just pass/fail ), and that there is no incorrect answer…only answers that are more correct.
I disagree with only men wanting to win. If these young men are not playing a sport to win and show their capabilities then what are they playing for? Life experience? They gain life experience but that is a by-product. Also, were not talking about infractions and consequences. We’re talking about playing a sport to the best of your abilities. I have never heard a coach tell a player to just give him just enough but not too much.I was in junior golden gloves from 10-12 I never heard my coach tell me “your winning, only use 1 hand this round”. I have also never seen anyone win the lottery and say just give me half..that’s all I need.
In HS we ( Covina ) had lost by some severe blowouts. It taught us that we did not like the score and we worked our butts off to get better. In our case it did more good than harm.
In most football games ( or any sport for that matter ) a healthy lead is a chance to get 2nd and 3rd strings some game experience. Nothing wrong with that. But, in a competition with much on the line, and against a rival..If I was coach and could pour it on I would. And I would expect no less from the team across from me. What they chose to do is their decision. I know in baseball they have the mercy rule. How come not in football?
I’m not here to try and change any persons opinions on this subject. To each their own.

Answer this question honestly….you are a player…which makes “YOU” feel better….beating your rival 28-7 or beating them 55-7?

  • cov80

sd we have not forgotten the FAKE PUNT with 3 min left up 35 TO 0 and about the MCd years not ONE KID remains on the TEAM BILLY BOY HAS NO CLASS GO COLTS

  • History

    Aram

    05, 06 07, 08, games? 2009 game? Now 2010?

Every year’s a little different when talent matures. 05, 06 games, mike was junior and senior. 07, 08 Barbone the same.

It was exciting watching these kids play and I’m sure the 5th will be the same. I think its been a very respectful game for both coaches and administration staffs.

Let the spirt and comp of these games continue. The stage is set and if Covina wins it outright 1st. place. If not its back to a coin flip like in I think 05 or 04..

  • nope

The issue with running a fake punt like that is not that they are running up the score, it’s the fact that if you are dominating a team like that there is professional courtesy to not reach into your bag of tricks and see what b.s. play you can pull on your unsuspecting opponent. If it was such a legit play why did the other ‘Aints coaches apologize to the Colts after the game? The story I heard was that when they went on the field to shake hands, the SD staff came over and said it was all Z’s idea and were apologizing. The guy may not be classless completely, but that play call definitely didn’t help his case.
Hey Wingin it? Colts haven’t been in a big game? Are you dense or just ignorant? I think beating the #1 Bulldogs and beating BP in a gritty contest vs BP could possibly count as big games. Give the keyboard back to an adult before you hurt yourself.
@ sd: Umm, I think the Covina QB was pretty smart for going to Covina, they run a spread, he gets to throw the ball. At San Dumass they run the wing where he would have had to run the ball more… you ever seen that kid run? He looks like a retarded 3 toed sloth running out there.

  • Example

The best example is Steve Hagerty in his 1st year at Amat, trying to turn things around form a disastrous year, trying to make a name for the program, trying to regain Amat’s hold on the SGV, and needing to impress in every way.
They were beating Diamond Ranch, the score was 17 -6 and Amat got a 1st down inside the 10 with 1:45 to go after moving the ball on the run during a long drive. Without a doubt the Lancers could have pounded it in – but Hagerty had the Lancers take a knee THREE TIMES inside the 10!
Which defines class, sportsmanship – and dominance more? Scoring one more time – or taking a knee proving that you don’t need to?

  • SD Saint

    TO NOPE:
You know what billy did make a good choice and im happy for him.
but i like how you talk crap about billy thats pretty funny but im sure hes a better athlete then u ever were. he might not be the best runner but he makes plays.. i went to the game lastnight and he doesnt have to run to make plays.
So go and enjoy your old glory days of riding the bench and ill be sure to have the “three toed sloth” make a special shoutout to you when he goes somewhere you never were…
