TRIBUNE SUPER 35 RANKINGS: Bishop Amat and Charter Oak best from start to finish

SAN GABRIEL VALLEY TRIBUNE’S SUPER 35 RANKINGS

1. Bishop Amat (7-1-1) — After losing the Serra opener to Alemany, the Lancers rebounded nicely and have a chance to share a piece of the league title with a win at home against Notre Dame. Even better if Loyola beats Alemany. No matter what, Amat’s playoff chances look good.

2. Charter Oak (8-1) – Extremely impressed with Big Lou and the coaching staff. When the Chargers moved to the Inland in 2010, it felt impossible, but also an opportunity for the Chargers to enjoy their finest hour with sucess. I’m starting to believe an Inland run is possible. They’re not ranked just No. 4, they’re act like it.

3. Chino Hills (6-2-1) – Only losses to Tesoro, Charter Oak and a tie to Bishop Amat. They’re clearly the No. 3 team in the area and dangerous. They give the Sierra two legitimate postseason threats. I’ll bet QB Matt Simko goes nuts in the playoffs.

4. South Hills (6-3) — They all but guaranteed themselves a spot in the playoffs by beating Ayala. They can finish second with an upset over Chino Hills, but not matter what, it’s been an incredible turnaround for a team that many picked to finish last in the Sierra.

5. San Dimas (8-1) — With everyone talking about Paraclete, Monrovia and Sierra Canyon, it’s easy to forget playoff-tested San Dimas. They’re as talented as they’ve ever been and will probably show it in a dominating fashion for the VVL title on Friday.

6. Ayala (5-4) — Will probably be the best area team not to make the playoffs. They had their shot against South Hills and came up empty bigtime. They have to hope Damien beats Chino Hills to create a three-way tie for second, otherwise, they’re at home for the playoffs.

7. Diamond Ranch (6-3) — What’s impressive about the Panthers is how close they’re to being 9-0. They’ve lost three games by a touchdown or less. What’s shocking, however, is they will probably need an at-large berth to make the Southeast playoffs. But however they get in, they won’t be a team anyone wants to face in the first round.

8. Bonita (5-4) – - The Bearcats are still in the drivers seat to win the Hacienda League title, but had the swag knocked out of them in a loss last week to Diamond Ranch. Are they a Southeast title contender? Not sure anymore.

9. Gladstone (8-1)– The Gladiators have clinched a share of the Montview League title, their first since 2005. It’s also the best regular season finish during coach Albert Sanchez’s long tenure. They’ve been great at times and as curious as everyone to find out what they can do in the playoffs.

10. Rowland (7-2) — Amazingly, the Raiders can clinch a share of the Hacienda League title and knock two-time defending champion West Covina out of the playoffs with a win on Thursday. Never thought I would write those words. Not in 2012.

The Rest: 11. El Monte (7-2), 12. Northview (7-2), 13. West Covina (4-5), 14. La Puente (7-2), 15. Glendora (3-6), 16. Covina (6-3), 17. Damien (3-5), 18. South El Monte (5-4), 19. Azusa (5-4), 20. Claremont (3-6), 21. Los Altos (5-5), 22. Arroyo (5-4), 23. Sierra Vista (6-3), 24. Duarte (4-5), 25. Diamond Bar (3-6), 26. Rosemead (3-6), 27. Mountain View (3-6), 28. Wilson (3-6), 29. Walnut (1-8), 30. Pomona (3-6), 31. Bassett (3-6), 32. Nogales (1-8), 33. Workman (2-7), 34. Baldwin Park (0-10), 35. Ganesha (0-9).

    Fred,
West Covina owns victories over your 4th & 7th ranked teams, and you even picked us to beat Rowland. Yet we cannot even crack your top ten? What gives?
I’ll be the first to admit that even battling injuries, WC has yet to live up to the expectations we all had for them this season. Rowland is going to be a tough game. But if we can somehow get the win and make the playoffs, WC will not settle for just being invited to the dance! Time for this team to awaken the heart of a champion and get that championship stroke into form!

    • D1

your team is trash bra, division 7 or 5 or whatever end of the spectrum your on, your trying to justify your team who can beat other crappy teams, get over it, your dont belong anywhere near the top ten unless you can go undefeated against real teams.

    • FredJ

You also have a loss to 5-5 Los Altos, a team Rowland beat 28-13.

  • FredJ

Rowland has a better record in the Hacienda than West Covina and Rowland has a better overall record by two full games if you count the forfeit. They DESERVE to be ranked where they’re. I also have Gladstone and El Monte ranked ahead of Glendora and Damien for the same reasons. But who do you think I or anyone would pick if Glendora or Damien played Gladstone or El Monte?

    • Bulldogs have bite

I’m not making a case to be ranked ahead of any specific team. But we do own a quality victory over your 4th ranked Inland Division playoffs bound South Hills team. A quality Win that I do not see on some aforementioned teams schedule ranked ahead of us. I also do not count the forfeit as a loss, it was a non-league game and that game was won on the field and the ineligible player had very little to do with the inevitable win. I guess WC could fatten up our win column by scheduling powerhouses like Nogales and Wilson, but unfortunately we opt to play some of the lowly Pac5 and Inland Division teams in the non-league!

      • Colt74

The forfeit was and is to this day BS. WestCo spanked us like a red headed step-child on the field. End of story. SJB had to forfeit 4 games and does anyone think that will affect their pairings?

      • D1

dude west covina is ranked in the 200s for the states, and in the 2000s for the country, dont try to take your trash team and make them sound better than they really are, your record is 4-5, you beat mediocre teams and your on a negative ratio of wins. Also you have only won one game at home, are you seriously trying to rank higher at all, if anything you could be ranked lower

        • Bulldogs have bite

Dude. Easy to call a team trash when you don’t claim one yourself right? Thanks for the input cyber coward!

          • D1

i gotchu man i went to Amat, i am Lancer alumni. I have family that goes to CO, easy as that, top two teams. your west covina bulldogs are jokes, cant beat a division 1 team for their lives.

          • Bulldogs have bite

Amat and CO are both having a great season. What motivates you to down a WC team that is obviously having a rebuilding year and been fighting injuries all year? Does talking down about WC improve Amat or CO’s chances to win their respective divisions? You just want to kick us when we are down, but you have been nowhere around for the last three years on these blogs. Focus your hate on Alemany, Mater Dei or Upland and Vista Murrieta. I guess your style would be to pick fights on only teams you think you can beat. Very corageous of you!

          • D1

im there when my team looses and when they win, when they went 3-7 i wasnt on here trying to say my team should be higher ranked in the sgv. just man up and dont try to say your team deserves more than what they really are. be realistic, such as CO might make it to the final, or Amat probably will get knocked out in the second round against a much stronger more dynamic program like santa margarita.

          • Bulldogs have bite

How am I not realistic? I just asked Fred why we cannot crack his top ten and gave a pretty legit reason behind why I think we should be up there. We are 5-4 like Bonita, and have beaten his #4 team South Hills and his #7 team Diamond Ranch. Where Rowland has only beaten DR. I’m not saying we should be a top 5 team, but we should still crack his top 10. I can say my team deserves more anytime I want because it’s my opinion and I’m entitled to it. I man’d up when I posted my opinion. You just sit and wait to attack posts rather than have anything comment worthy of your own to say.

      • AMAT 73

        BhB,
I would think you would be more concerned about making the playoffs then the rankings in the Trib. It is toss up as to where and why teams are placed at certain slots . Sometimes it’s whether the consensus thinks team A would beat team B head to head . Sometimes that doesn’t matter . Sometimes beating a common opponent matters , sometimes it doesn’t . With what you posted it would make sense but the uncertainty of the ranking system and what points are made for what criteria is all the more reason for you to be firing up for Thursday night and leave no doubt .

        • Bulldogs have bite

I never said I wasn’t concerned about making the playoffs. I clearly stated Rowland will be tough to beat. They are well coached and their RB Avery Dufus is the best back nobody knows about. I do agree that these rankings have unclear criteria.

  • SGV Fan

No Coin toss this year! Just solid offense and defense this year. No excuse, no drama football. I like the new QB this year, the kid looks great and is doing a great job!

  • SGV_FOOTBALL

Fred for the # 6 spot switch Chino Hills to Charter Oak.
PS where are all the WC fans that wanted to switch divisions last year?

    • Bulldogs have bite

The WC fans are in the same hiding place the Charter Oak fans used in 2010 when they were in a rebuild year. I want to know where the WC haters were for ’10 &’11?

      • D1

dude CO has literally destroyed ever team in their way minus amat. so with that in mind, west covina would never survive against division 1 or 2 teams. simply you guys need to just leave it alone and try to talk your team up. numbers matter and west covina doesnt have them.

    • WCDan

      SGV_FOOTBALL & D1
No problem with us not being in the top ten based on the fact that we lost games that we were expected to win this year, so go ahead and rub it in if it makes you feel better.
As for switching divisions West Co would be a good fit for your Sierra league. Maybe only 3rd or 4th place this year, but for the next couple of years they should be good enough to be contenders in a league like the Sierra.
I haven’t researched into this, but off the top of my head I think the Sierra will lose a lot of key seniors this year, they could very well go back to struggling in the Inland division in the next couple of years, maybe they would be a better fit in the Central, or Southeast division.

      • SGV_FOOTBALL

Dan, I will tell you this, CO never struggles to make the playoffs even it graduates a big senior class! Its a disgrace that the Champion of the division is on the verge of not making the playoffs. Same can be said for West Covina and maybe they should be moved to the Mid Valley where you might give Paraclete or Sierra Canyon a fight for the title.

Dan please get it out of your head, your not ready and will not be ready. Chino Hills was the king of the division and look at what CO has done to them.

        • Bulldogs have bite

You sure about that? That 6-5 team CO had in 2010 struggled for sure. What a discrace for the Chargers…..

          • SGV_FOOTBALL

Ohhh my friend only if you took the time to read my post and not to jump the gun. I said what a disgrace that the Division champion is on the verge of not making the playoffs. Not about your record, or the 2010 CO record, your starting to sound like the Amat fans. By the way CO did not have an uncertainty when it came to making the playoffs that year. On the other hand you guys do!

        • WCDan

          SGV,
Your quote: “By the way CO did not have an uncertainty when it came to making the playoffs that year. On the other hand you guys do!”
Uhh, short memory? CO was in the same situation in 2010 as WC is in today where they were in a do or die situation and had to win their last game to get the final playoff spot.
To top it off CO was sweating it as South Hills took them into overtime almost killing CO’s playoff hopes that year.
By the way what is WC not ready for? I think they would compete well in the Sierra, they would be in the playoffs most years.

  • AramT

    What’s wrong with this headline?

“TRIBUNE SUPER 35 RANKINGS: Bishop Amat and Charter Oak best from start to finish”

I guess it would be the fact that Fred ranked CO No. 5!!!!! in the area to start the season so saying “start to finish” does not apply.

    • AMAT 73

Aram cut Fred a little slack , Weren’t you the guy who had Monrovia as the preseason number 1?????? At least he was right about number 1 so far . And he like you did not have CO at number one so he is correct in a way because starting at 5 and moving to 2 out of 35 means you are one of the best as in the top 10 starting out .Could even say it for CH as they are the only other original top 5 left after CO and AMAT .

  • Kurt Stone

Even when WC was at its’ best in 2010, 2011, they were no better than a 4th or 5th place team in the Sierra or Serra leagues. The fact is WC can not compete with CO, Chino Hills, nor Amat. This is not a knock, but just a fact.

    • WCDan

      Kurt Stone,

Please don’t mention the Sierra league in the same sentence as the Serra, they are not even close. Also do you really believe that in 10 and 11 WC would have been a 4th or 5th place team in the Sierra? If you do then I have a bridge out in London I would like to sell you.
In both of those years WC most likely would have been at least 2nd in the Sierra league, with a solid chance at first. Tell me which other teams would have been favored over WC in 2010 besides Chino Hills? Or in 2011 besides Charter Oak?
Each year is different and that is the only fact we have, CO has had a tremendous run in the SGV this decade and a half. I do not put West Co on the same level as them as far as the decade goes, but in 10 and 11 WC was on par with CO. This year WC is rebuilding, next year they have a lot coming back and the freshman classes of the last two years have each taken league, I think they are Sierra ready.

      • BenDoverIE

WC is ready for maybe 3rd place in the Sierra IF they are lucky. CHHS is recruiting in the IE like crazy, CO draws some fo the better talent in it’s area so those two will battle for 1 and 2 year in and year out. Ayala, they can’t seem to get out of their own way when it matters, Damien… ROFLMFAO – they are a mess, Claremont, perennial Sierra Basement dwellers.

    • Bulldogs have bite

WC and CO both shared a couple common opponents in 2010. With WC coming away with more convincing victories in those games. CO lost to Glendora in 2010, a few weeks later WC beat that same Glendora team. I don’t see how that would make WC not able to compete in those years and 2010 in particular. So before you state facts, try to actually have actual facts prepared. Thank you.
