Glendora baseball falls to Santiago in championship of Don Lugo tournament, 5-4

Glendora scored early but left 11 runners stranded on base and couldn’t hang on as Santiago (Corona) rallied for five runs in the final two innings to knock off the Tartans 5-4 for the championship of the Don Lugo Baseball Tournament on Monday afternoon.
It was the first loss of the season for the Tartans (4-1), who were the defending tournament champion, and ruined a good pitching performance by senior Ryan Beyer.
Beyer started the game and allowed only one hit and no runs in four and two-thirds innings but had to leave after 82 pitches. He hit one batter and gave up six walks to the Sharks.
“Ryan has quality stuff,” Tartans coach Dan Henley said. “When he throws strikes he’s really good. He’s been able to work out of those jams and keep his composure. He’s been great this year and has become a fine pitcher.”

The Sharks (5-0) scored three un-earned runs in the top of the seventh inning to capture the title.
The winning run came on a bases-loaded walk to freshman Brice Turang bringing another freshman, Jacob Shanks, with the go-ahead run. Shanks had reached base on a game-tying single.
“Their maturity is just well beyond their years,” Sharks coach Ty DeTrinidad said. “We want our young kids to grow up as soon as possible. They’re talented but we want them to mature soon.”
The Tartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and had Sharks starting pitcher Casey Young on the ropes but couldn’t put the game away early.
Griffen Herrera hit a one out single, Nick Kaye walked and first baseman R.J. Romo singled to left field but it was hit too hard to score the Herrera.
Race Gardner walked to drive in the first run Nathan Collett singled off the third baseman’s glove for the second run but the Tartans left the bases loaded.
“We wanted to separate ourselves,” Henley said. “It could have been 6-7 -nothing but, it wasn’t. We could have used an insurance run. We tried to execute a sacrifice with runners on first and second with no outs but we struck out trying to bunt. Hopefully, we learned we just have to do a better job of executing and that after we establish a lead, we have to move away and create some distance.”
Alex Briggs led the Tartans with three hits, including a double, and Nolan Collett added a pair of singles.
