DENVER >> The Dodgers will give the ball to rookie left-hander Julio Urias for Friday’s start against the San Diego Padres.

“The way he’s throwing the baseball right now,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said, “this is the best thing for the Dodgers and for Julio.”

Urias, 20, is 5-2 with a 3.71 earned-run average in 14 games (12 starts) for the Dodgers this year. His last outings, all victories, have seen Urias allow two earned runs in 19 ⅔ innings, good for a 0.92 ERA.

And yet, Friday’s start might be his last of the season.

Dodgers place Brett Anderson and Scott Kazmir on the disabled list, tying an MLB record.

The Dodgers placed pitchers Brett Anderson (finger blister) and Scott Kazmir (neck inflammation) on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday. Kazmir became the 27th different player to land on the DL since the season began, which ties a major league record established by the 2012 Boston Red Sox.

Neither pitcher will be eligible to start a game before Sept. 7.

The Dodgers also optioned right-handed reliever Josh Fields to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Left-hander Luis Avilan was recalled from Triple-A, along with right-handed starter Ross Stripling and infielder Charlie Culberson.

Anderson had been scheduled to start Thursday’s game against the San Francisco Giants, but that assignment is now to be determined.

Bud Norris will start for the Dodgers on Thursday.

Bud Norris, who threw 5 ⅔ innings Saturday in a rehab start for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga, will start for the Dodgers Thursday in Philadelphia, manager Dave Roberts said.

Norris made only one rehab start after being placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right lat muscle. The right-hander allowed one run and four hits for Rancho Cucamonga, throwing 46 strikes among 59 pitches. His fastball topped out at 96 mph.

He’s effectively taking the rotation spot held by Brandon McCarthy. McCarthy was placed on the 15-day DL Sunday with stiffness in his right hip.

Kenta Maeda and Scott Kazmir are starting Tuesday and Wednesday against the Phillies, respectively.

The Dodgers will keep Julio Urias and Ross Stripling on the active roster as long relievers along with Brock Stewart, who was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City earlier Sunday. Stewart took over for Brett Anderson after one inning Sunday.

Dodgers rotation plans could change in Colorado.

The Dodgers’ game notes today listed their starting pitchers for next week in Colorado as follows:

Tuesday: Brandon McCarthy vs. Jon Gray
Wednesday: Kenta Maeda vs. Tyler Anderson
Thursday: Scott Kazmir vs. Tyler Chatwood

The Dodgers return home Friday for a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox. In theory, they won’t need a fifth starter until Saturday.

Manager Dave Roberts said that “we could go that route, or insert a starter to give guys an extra day.” That starter could pitch in the Colorado series, Roberts said.
