Quarterback T.J. Millweard granted release to transfer

Redshirt freshman T.J. Millweard has asked for and been granted his release to transfer out of UCLA, and intends to find a school closer to his home in the Dallas area.

The former three-star recruit looked like the best option to back up star quarterback Brett Hundley after spring and fall camp, though the separation in talent was steep. His departure leaves Jerry Neuheisel and Mike Fafaul as the most likely competitors at the No. 2 spot.

Millweard had discussed doubts about his future as a Bruin with head coach Jim Mora after spring camp, but was encouraged to stay. After staying through fall camp in San Bernardino to be certain of his decision, he met with Mora Monday morning and asked for his release.

“It just wasn’t the fit I was looking for,” Millweard said. “I’m a Southern boy. I like my chips and queso. I like wearing my boots.” Continue reading “Quarterback T.J. Millweard granted release to transfer” »

Receiver Devin Fuller ready to break out for Bruins

SAN BERNARDINO — The receiver knows he has space. His strides are smooth and his instincts are sound. It’s practice, after all, and he only has one defender on him. This isn’t hard.

But as the ball drops down toward him, his eyes drift just a little. When it hits his fingers, he can’t hold on.

Devin Fuller may be UCLA’s most talented receiver. By his own admittance, he still has room to grow.

“I know I have good hands,” the sophomore said. “I have good hands. But I relax on the ball a lot. I think I can catch it in easy, make it look pretty.

“But I make the hard ones. That’s the thing with me. … When we get in team periods, I rarely drop anything.” Continue reading “Receiver Devin Fuller ready to break out for Bruins” »

Linebacker Jeremy Castro transfers to Hawaii

Jeremy Castro’s bumpy path toward UCLA is officially over. The former four-star recruit from Murrieta, Calif., has transferred to Hawaii, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported.

Jim Mora said earlier this week that Castro had not been cleared by UCLA. The Bruins’ head coach added that he was not allowed to divulge any details. The 6-2, 240-pound freshman was part of the 2012 recruiting class, but grayshirted due to academic struggles and enrolled in January.

Practicing with the Bruins this past spring, Castro made very few gains in the depth chart. Led by All-American Anthony Barr, UCLA linebackers form the team’s deepest and arguably most talented unit.
