Jordan Dresner landed on the D3Baseball.com Preseason All-America Honorable-Mention Team.

University of Redlands junior shortstop Jordan Dresner has earned 2014 Preseason All-America Honorable-Mention recognition from D3Baseball.com.

Dresner, a Los Osos High School graduate, scored a team-best 42 runs during last year’s run to the inaugural SCIAC Postseason Tournament.

He hit .389, racking up 58 hits to rank second on the team in the category, while raking eight doubles and four triples in the process. Additionally, Dresner notched 21 RBI on the year to go along with an on-base percentage of .457 and a slugging percentage of .497.

For his efforts, D3baseball.com honored Dresner with a Third-Team All-Region plaudit. He also garnered American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Second-Team All-Region honors and First-Team All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) laurels.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps sweeps weekly top honors

Annika Jessen and Remy Pinson

For the second week in a row, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps has swept the weekly SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors.

Athena swimmer Annika Jessen took home Female Athlete of the Week honors while Stag basketball player Remy Pinson took Athlete of the Week on the men’s side for Jan. 20-26.

Jessen was a part of two pool records as CMS beat Cal Lu and Caltech at home on Jan. 25. She swam the 50 fly (25.67) leg of the winning 200 medley relay which set a new pool record of 1:48.56 (#10 nationally in 2014).

She won the 100 fly with a personal best and pool record time of 57.61. The mark is an NCAA ‘B’ cut and the second fastest turned in nationally in 2014. She also finished second in the 50 free (25.59) and swam a 50 free leg (25.44) on CMS ‘B’ 200 free relay.

Pinson had 30 points and nine three-pointers – both career highs – as CMS beat Redlands 82-76 on Jan. 25 to remain in first place in SCIAC (7-0).

His previous career high was 22 and this was only the second time of his career that he has broken 20 points.

Pomona-Pitzer athlete honored

Junior guard Kyle McAndrews of Pomona-Pitzer is the SCIAC Male Athlete of the Week (all sports).

He tallied the two highest scoring totals of his three-year career,  with 32 in a double-overtime 90-85 win over Chapman on Wednesday and 28 in an 83-74 road win over Whittier on Saturday.

His previous high of 25 was set earlier this season in a win against UC Santa Cruz.

The two wins helped Pomona-Pitzer extend its winning streak to four games and stay in second place in the SCIAC at 5-1, just behind Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 4-0. The Sagehens are now 9-5 overall on the season.

McAndrews earned the SCIAC honor for the second time in his career, after also winning it in November of 2012.

Sagehens’ coach notches milestone 400th victory

Head Coach Charles Katsiaficas of Pomona-Pitzer notched his 400th career win as the Sagehens (6-5) upended host Trinity (Tex.) 68-63 Monday afternoon.

Katsiaficas, now in is 26th year heading the program, boasts a mark of 400-281. In a unique twist, he also picked up his milestone win in San Antonio (at the Trinity University Classic), where his old boss, former Pomona-Pitzer Head Coach Gregg Popovich, currently coaches the San Antonio Spurs.

Katsiaficas served as an assistant coach for Popovich at Pomona-Pitzer in the mid 1980′s, and served one year as an interim head coach for the Sagehens in 1986-87 while Popovich took a one-year sabbatical (to work with Larry Brown at Kansas). One year later, Popovich left Pomona-Pitzer to become Larry Brown’s assistant with the Spurs, and Katsiaficas took over the Sagehen helm permanently.

He has led the Sagehens to 10 SCIAC Championships and 11 berths in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Among the key players leading the team to the win were senior forward Jake Klewer with 11 points, 16 rebounds and five assists. Junior guard Kyle McAndrews had a team-high 14 points, while senior forward John Weiss and junior guard Michael Cohen each had 10 points.
