Two local SCIAC football standouts earn All-American honors

Senior running back Travis Sparks-Jackson of the University of La Verne and sophomore corner back Victor Bunce of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps have bother earned All-American honors from D3Football.com.

Sparks-Jackson was a second team honoree. He rushed for 1,521 yards and 19 touchdown on 235 tries in leading the Leopards to a conference championship and its first berth in the playoffs since 1994.

Sparks-Jackson becomes La Verne’s first All-American since Anthony Jones and Andy Moran earned the honors in 1995 and the first Leopard to receive the D3football.com award.

Bunce earned honorable mention. He had 38 tackles, nine interceptions and 12 pass breakups in helping the Stags to a 7-2 overall mark and second place showing in the SCIAC.

Local SCIAC players earn preseason All-American honors

Eleven players from four area schools have been singled out in USA College Football’s Preseason All-American team.

The University of Redlands had four selections, with offensive lineman Aaron Hinkle named to the first team and linebacker Michael Tootle named to the second team along with linebacker Griffin Lord (Damien HS). A fourth Bulldog, quarterback Kevin Russell, made the third team.

Pomona-Pitzer also had four selections. Wide receiver Brett Harper and offensive lineman Jack Horstmann made the first team, with offensive lineman Trey Connet and defensive lineman Brian Friel on the second team.

The University of La Verne was also represented by linebacker Christian Lozon on the first team and defensive lineman Nik Gutierrez on the third team.

The lone selection for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was defensive lineman Alex Chang, on the third team.
