Five questions: Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Todd Dewey on UNLV

UCLA is coming home after a season-opening loss to Texas A&M and will UNLV at the Rose Bowl on Saturday at 5 p.m. The Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Todd Dewey answered some questions about UNLV, and what the Rebels have in store for the second year under head coach Tony Sanchez.

1. It’s year two of the Tony Sanchez era, how does the mood around the program compare to last year and what’s the next step for the Rebels under Sanchez?

Following the lead of the high-energy Sanchez, the mood around the program is upbeat and expectations are higher this season despite the team winning only three games last year. That’s because the 3-9 mark was an improvement after UNLV won only two games in eight of the previous 11 seasons. The Rebels are hoping to take another big step this year and go to a bowl game for only the fifth time in school history. UCLA had lofty goals during the offseason and the Bruins are confident they can still chase them despite Saturday’s loss to Texas A&M.

“Often times you see it’s better to lose in September than it is in December,” center Scott Quessenberry said. “We’re going to shake it off and we’re going to claw out the rest of this tough schedule we have.”

More from the Monday’s main story as UCLA restarts practice in advance for its home opener Saturday.

UCLA Bruins (0-1) vs. UNLV Rebels (1-0)
Kickoff: Saturday, Sept. 10, 5 p.m. PT, Rose Bowl
TV: Pac-12 Networks
Radio: AM 570

Scouting report: UNLV, under second-year head coach Tony Sanchez, is 1-0 for the first time since 2009 after the Rebels dominated FCS school Jackson State last week. Transfer quarterback Johnny Stanton made his UNLV debut in a big way, throwing for three touchdowns on 10-of-12 passing and 217 yards. Receiver Devonte Boyd caught all of Stanton’s touchdown passes. Little can be drawn from such a dominant win after a lower-division opponent, but the connection between Stanton and Boyd could be a dangerous one for the Bruins. After a tough loss against Texas A&M, UCLA will be looking for a good bounce back against the Rebels to start building momentum for an important nonconference finale against BYU. 2015 in review

Head coach Tony Sanchez jumped from prep football powerhouse Bishop Gorman to UNLV in 2015, coaching the Rebels to a 3-9 record during his first year at the helm. It’s a very underwhelming record, but when compared to UNLV’s equally underwhelming history recently, it doesn’t look so bad. The three-win season marked only the second time since 2009 that the Rebels got more than two victories, and four of the losses were by seven or fewer points. UCLA got a 37-3 road victory over UNLV on Sept. 12 in which the Bruins racked up 526 total yards. Continue reading “UCLA 2016 schedule preview: UNLV” »

UCLA squeezes past UNLV in Maui Invitational with 77-75 win

The UCLA men’s basketball team will take any win it can get at this point, but how it looked on Monday night against UNLV doesn’t inspire much confidence.

If the Runnin’ Rebels — which has missed two straight NCAA Tournaments and is coming off a seventh-place finish in the Mountain West — took the Bruins down to the wire in a 77-75 decision, what exactly will No. 5 Kansas due tomorrow night?

UCLA deserves credit in at least a couple of areas. Its 3-2 zone defense held UNLV to 41 percent from the field. It was nearly flawless at the free throw line, hitting 23 straight after point guard Bryce Alford’s first miss.

There were several other causes for concern. The biggest was the disappearance of senior Tony Parker, who had opened the season with three straight double-doubles. The Bruins had tried to use both its centers in the same lineup this season, playing Parker next to 7-foot sophomore Thomas Welsh. That wasn’t possible against UNLV, as Parker faded back into his foul-troubled self of old. Continue reading “UCLA squeezes past UNLV in Maui Invitational with 77-75 win” »
