Keeping an Eagle Eye on our parks

eagle.jpg

The Los Angeles County Police are holding Eagle Eye Park Watch meetings at local parks in connection with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The meetings began in August and will continue through September and October.

Meetings have been held at Manzanita and Steinmetz parks in Hacienda Heights, as well as in Rowland Heights and Pathfinder parks. Another meeting will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday in Rowland Heights Park.

Much like a traditional Neighborhood Watch program, Eagle Eye asks residents to assume responsibility for the activities taking place in and around their park in order to help prevent crime and vandalism to park equipment. They also help curtail suspicious activities in parks.

The Eagle Eye Neighborhood Park Watch Program was created by the Illinois Association of Park Districts. To date, 38 agencies in 12 states are members of the Eagle Eye family.

Agencies participating in the program have seen: lower crime, vandalism, and misuse of park properties, a reduction in the repair and restoration costs for equipment and facilities and a rise in community pride

The City of Glendale, Arizona has documented over $80,000 in savings over a two year period. This included:
31% decrease in vandalism at parks and recreation facilities
38% decrease in man hours for fixing vandalized property
40% decrease in the total cost of fixing vandalized equipment

Los Altos takes to the field

FOOOTBALLL!

That's right, local teams take to the gridiron tonight to start the season.

The Los Altos Conquerors take on the No. 2 ranked San Dimas in the Saints' stadium tonight at 7 p.m.

On paper, San Dimas has a better team returning than last year's squad, which went 9-2 before finishing in a three-way tie for the Valle Vista League title. They then beat rival Bonita.

Felipe Aguilar is the new Los Altos coach. The former Los Altos quarterback lead the Conquerors to back-to-back CIF-SS titles in 1999-2000. He replaces Greg Gano, who is stepping aside after winning four titles in 11 years.

"We have a lot of respect for San Dimas; we know they're one of the top teams in the Valley. But we're Los Altos. We don't back down from anyone, and we expect to when when we walk out on the field," Gano says.
