UCLA ‘disgusted’ after 84-81 loss to Monmouth in season opener

For the third time in seven tries, UCLA opened its season with a loss. In one of the ugliest performances of Steve Alford’s three-year tenure, the Bruins choked away a double-digit lead against Monmouth in less than nine minutes — then fell in overtime in an 84-81 decision.

“Pretty disgusted in the way that we played, to say the least,” said junior guard Bryce Alford.

Added senior big man Tony Parker: “They played way harder than us.”

Both pointed to turnovers as the main cause, with the Bruins coughing up the ball 23 times to spur 23 points for the Hawks.

“It was a game where the whole time, we couldn’t control the ball,” Alford said. “A lot of that’s on me. … I can’t have a five-assist, four-turnover kind of night. That’s not something I can do.

“As a leader, as a point guard, as a guard that’s been here for three years now, I can’t have games where, as a team, we have 23 turnovers. That’s not acceptable.”

UCLA center Tony Parker, the lone senior on the Bruins’ roster this year, talked about how he thinks the team’s offense might change this season.

“It’s easy for us to get shooters,” he said. “We have a lot of freedom in the post, because it’s easy outlets. … The post is going to be a big-time thing for us. In the past, we drove it a lot. This time, we’re probably going to pass a lot in the post.”

Parker also shared his thoughts on sophomore Jonah Bolden, the four-star recruit who sat out the 2014-15 season due to eligibility issues.

UCLA’s Gyorgy Goloman out 6-8 weeks with stress fracture in leg

UCLA forward Gyorgy Goloman will be out for six to eight weeks with a stress fracture in his right leg, head coach Steve Alford said Wednesday.

Goloman only averaged 1.3 points and 1.5 rebounds in 10.8 minutes per game as a freshman, but his presence gives the Bruins more flexibility in their lineups. An eight-week recovery would keep him out through much of the nonconference slate.

“It’s unfortunate,” Alford said. “G.G’s had a tremendous summer for us. He’s gained 20 pounds, grew an inch. He’s 6-11, 220.”

UCLA opens its season with a home game against Monmouth on Nov. 13, embarking on a schedule that includes Kentucky (Dec. 3), Gonzaga (Dec. 12), and North Carolina (Dec. 19).

Center Tony Parker, who was wearing a protective boot over his left foot earlier this week, is recovering from minor toe injury. He is expected to return to practice by Monday at the latest. The senior is one of 20 players on the preseason watch list for the Karl Malone Award, established last season to honor the top power forward in men’s college basketball.

UCLA’s Tony Parker, Gyorgy Goloman suffer foot, leg injuries

UCLA center Tony Parker and forward Gyorgy Goloman are both currently being evaluated for foot and leg injuries, respectively.

The severity of the injuries are still unclear, but Parker is currently wearing a boot over his left foot as a precautionary measure. The senior started 33 games last season and appeared in one more off the bench, averaging 11.5 points and 6.7 rebounds.

Goloman played in 35 games as a freshman reserve, averaging 1.3 points and 1.5 rebounds.

The Bruins host an exhibition game against Cal State Los Angeles on Oct. 30, then open their season against Monmouth on Nov. 13.
