GLENDALE, Ariz. — Dodgers pitcher Chad Gaudin will undergo an MRI exam after feeling a tingling sensation in his right hand Thursday, manager Don Mattingly said.

Gaudin reported feeling a “tweak” sensation in his right biceps in his last Cactus League start Saturday. But he recovered in the meantime and was scheduled to pitch in a minor-league game Thursday at Camelback Ranch.

“He got all the way to the mound, the bullpen mound, threw a couple and was feeling the same thing,” Mattingly said of Gaudin. “He’s feeling the same feeling he felt before, tingling in his fingers and things like that — enough to stop it. … He said it felt like you hit your funny bone.”

The injury adds to a growing list of ailments that is depleting the Dodgers’ pitching depth. Veteran Erik Bedard was expected to compete with Gaudin for a spot starter’s job, but he has been sidelined with a left triceps injury. The Dodgers will need a spot starter at least twice in April because left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu has inflammation in his left shoulder.

Reliever Brandon League had an MRI on his right shoulder and is expected to begin the season on the disabled list.

Off-day notes: Will Ferrell, Brett Anderson, Chad Gaudin, links.

Will Ferrell Dodgers

Got a text from a scout this morning wondering who the Dodgers’ closer will be until Jansen returns. Statistically speaking, I’d have to go with the Ferrell kid.

With a couple exceptions the Dodgers are enjoying a day off today — the only day off on their Cactus League schedule. Brett Anderson is starting a Triple-A game on a back field at Camelback Ranch. If you’re in the area, the game is free to attend, though seating is typically limited to standing room only. Chad Gaudin is throwing a bullpen session, his first time off a mound since he felt a “tweak” in his right biceps Saturday.

Here are a few things I’ve been reading this morning:

Hyun-Jin Ryu, Erik Bedard, and the Dodgers’ quest for a fifth starter.

Erik Bedard

Dodgers pitcher Erik Bedard could be out until May with a strained left teres major muscle.

GLENDALE, Ariz. — We gained a little clarity about the Dodgers’ fifth starter situation Monday morning.

To recap so far: Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Brett Anderson and Brandon McCarthy are having healthy springs. Hyun-Jin Ryu is not. He flew back to Los Angeles to get an MRI on his ailing left shoulder and will begin the season on the disabled list.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said that Ryu is scheduled to meet with team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache later today and will fly back to Arizona tomorrow. Mattingly also shared just how irrelevant the fifth starter will be for the Dodgers in April: He’ll start April 13 or 14 against the Seattle Mariners at home, then again April 23 or 24 against the San Francisco Giants.

So, potentially, Ryu can start the season on the disabled list and still miss only one start — two if the injury is serious enough to knock him out for a month.

When Hyun-Jin Ryu’s first start of the season for the Dodgers was jeopardized by shoulder inflammation, veterans Erik Bedard and Chad Gaudin figured to be among the top candidates to make a spot start if needed.

Dodgers pitcher Chad Gaudin connects Tom Verducci to Will Ferrell.

PEORIA, Ariz. — In March 2005, Sports Illustrated senior writer Tom Verducci embedded himself in the Toronto Blue Jays’ spring camp for the entertainment and enlightenment of his readers. On his fifth day, Verducci got a uniform and and a position and a turn at-bat in an intrasquad game. You can read the story Verducci wrote here.

Yesterday, actor/comedian Will Ferrell took part in five different games in one day for the entertainment of HBO viewers. At some point MLB will auction Ferrell’s game-worn memorabilia on its website, with proceeds going to benefit cancer research. You can read all about Ferrell’s adventure with the Dodgers here.

One man had a front-row seat to both events: Dodgers pitcher Chad Gaudin.
