CIF-SS football: my prediction on how the Inland Division will look

The pairings don’t come out until tomorrow morning, but as I like to try and do each year, I try and predict who will play who.
Here is the Inland Division bracket as I think it will look. But 2 things before I give you the bracket. 1) I changed this Sunday morning when I learned Citrus Valley got the at-large team, not Hemet. In a previous blog post, I wrote how close it is between the 3 teams in the running: Hemet, Citrus Valley and Temescal Canyon, at least based on CIF criteria. 2) I really want to see a Cajon-San Gorgonio matchup, but it never seemed to work out

My prediction on how the Inland Division bracket will look:

Tahquitz (Mountain Pass No. 3, 4-6) at No. 1 seed REV (Citrus Belt No. 1, 9-1)
Jurupa Hills (San Andreas No. 2, 5-5) at Elsinore (Sunbelt No. 2, 8-2)
Cajon (Citrus Belt No. 3, 7-3) at Rancho Verde (Inland Valley No. 2, 8-2)
Rim of the World (San Andreas No. 3, 5-5) at No. 4 seed Citrus Hill (Mountain Pass No. 1, 9-1)
Citrus Valley (Citrus Belt at-large, 4-6) at No. 3 seed Riverside Poly (Inland Valley No. 1, 10-0)
Paloma Valley (Sunbelt No. 3, 6-4) at San Gorgonio (San Andreas No. 1, 9-1)
Carter (Citrus Belt No. 2, 8-2) at San Jacinto (Mountain Pass No. 2, 9-1)
North (Inland Valley No. 3, 3-7 at No. 2 seed Heritage (Sunbelt No. 1, 10-0).

Citrus Valley football will be considered for at-large CIF-SS playoff berth

Yucaipa went into Friday’s regular season finale looking like a good shot to grab the CIF-SS Inland Division’s one at-large playoff berth.
All Yucaipa needed to do was to beat Redlands.
But, things didn’t go according to plan and Yucaipa lost to Redlands, creating a three-way tie for fourth with Citrus Valley, Yucaipa and Redlands. While fourth place in an eight-team does not get an automatic berth into the playoffs anymore, the tie did need to be broken in order for one of the teams to be considered for the at-large berth.
And it was Citrus Valley that won the coin flip. That leaves the Blackhawks (4-6) likely vying with Hemet (6-4) from the Mountain Pass League and Temescal Canyon (3-7) of the Sunbelt League for the division’s lone at-large berth.
We will know early on Sunday morning which team made it in, and then later on Sunday the playoff draws will be announced.
Who will get it? I don’t know for sure. On the surface, you would think Hemet based on overall record.
But, there are other factors.
Here is the at-large criteria from the football playoff bulletin:

Criteria utilized by the At-Large Selection Committee:
(a) Head-to-head competition of teams under consideration (4 points)
(b) Overall strength of the league from which the team is entered (1 point)
(c) Overall win-loss record (1 point)
(d) Strength against common opponents (1 point)
(e) Strength of schedule (2 points, using overall win-loss record of opponents)
(f) Free lance teams will be part of the pool for the filling of at-large berths

Head-to-head competition? There was none.
Common opponents? I think Temescal Canyon and Hemet shared one, and both teams lost to Temecula Valley.
Strength of league? The Citrus Belt is considered the strongest league in the division, so Citrus Valley would have the advantage there.
Strength of opponents? That advantage goes to Temescal Canyon. Record of TC’s opponents are 61-39, Citrus Valley’s are 56-44 and Hemet’s are 44-56.
So, with strength of schedule weighing more (two points) than other criteria, the pick could be Temescal Canyon.

My CIF-SS Inland and East Valley predictions

I feel much better about my Eastern Division picks than I do about these.

I had trouble figuring out to do with Rancho Cucamonga and Upland after Upland beat RC on Friday and some league champs (Charter Oak, Eisenhower) were ranked low or not in the top 10).

The East Valley was tough with Rim ranked No. 4 last week, won, but will go in as the Mountain Valley League’s No. 3 team.

Here is what I have

INLAND DIVISION
Los Osos (Baseline No. 4, at-large, 5-5) at No. 1 seed Vista Murrieta (Southwestern No. 1, 9-1); Corona Santiago (Big VIII No. 3, 5-5) at Eisenhower (CItrus Belt No. 1, 8-2); Chino Hills (Sierra No. 2, 7-3) at Rancho Cucamonga (Baseline No. 2, 9-1); Yucaipa (Citrus Belt No. 3, 6-4) at No. 4 seed Norco (Big VIII No. 2, 7-3); South Hills (Sierra No. 3, 5-5) at No. 3 seed Upland (Baseline No. 1, 7-3); Redlands East Valley (Citrus Belt No. 2, 5-5) at Chaparral (Southwestern No. 2, 7-3); Great Oak (Southwestern No. 3, 6-4) at Charter Oak (Sierra No. 1, 6-4); Etiwanda (Baseline No. 3, 6-4) at No. 2 seed Corona Centennial (Big VIII No. 1, 8-2).
EAST VALLEY DIVISION
Arrowhead Christian (Ambassador No. 4 at-large, 7-3) at No. 1 seed Jurupa Hills (Mountain Valley No. 1, 8-2); Shadow Hills (De Anza No. 2, 6-4) at Brethren Christian (Academy No. 2, 7-2); Twentynine Palms (De Anza No. 3, 4-6) at Santa Clara/Fillmore (Frontier No. 1, tie-break winner); Banning (Mountain Valley No. 4, at-large, 4-6) at No. 4 seed Western Christian (Ambassador No. 1, 10-0); Sage Hill (Academy No. 3, at-large, 5-5) at No. 3 Big Bear (De Anza No. 1, 8-2); Linfield Christian (Ambassador No. 2, 6-4) at Citrus Valley (Mountain Valley No. 2, 5-5); Rim of the World (Mountain Valley No. 3, 7-3) at Santa Clara/Fillmore (Frontier No. 2, tie-break loser); Ontario Christian (Ambassador No. 3, 6-4) at No 2. seed St. Margaret’s (Academy No. 1, 9-1).

CIF-SS East Valley championship game moved; my CIF championship game picks

If you haven’t already heard, the CIF-SS East Valley Division football championship game pitting Rim of the World and Ontario Christian on Friday night has been moved to Citrus Valley because of the threat of inclement weather at Rim.

Here are the games that include Inland Empire teams, the dates and times and my prediction. San Bernardino County teams in bold.

Friday’s Games
INLAND DIVISION
No. 2 Corona Centennial (12-1) at No. 1 Vista Murrieta (13–0), 7 p.m.
Prediction: Vista Murrieta 31, Corona Centennial 27
Storyline: Team from the I.E. advances into the state championship semifinals.
EASTERN DIVISION
No. 3 Serrano (13-0) at No. 1 Perris Citrus Hill (13-0), 7 p.m.
Predicton; Citrus Hill 35, Serrano 28
Storyline: Serrano can’t quite contain Citrus Hill’s explosive spread offense and the Diamondbacks drop to 1-3 in CIF-SS championship games
EAST VALLEY DIVISION
No. 1 Ontario Christian (13-0) vs. unseeded Rim of the World (11-2) at Citrus Valley HS, 7 p.m.
Prediction: Rim of the World 41, Ontario Christian 27
Storyline: Rim running back Jacob Taylor becomes the sixth back in U.S. history to go over 4,000 yards. He finishes with 4,077 yards and Rim continues its offensive roll. Rim’s tough league pays dividends.
Saturday’s Game
CENTRAL DIVISION
No. 3 Kaiser (12-1) at No. 4 Moreno Valley Rancho Verde (10-3), 7 p.m.
Prediction: Kaiser 15, Rancho Verde 14
Storyline: Kaiser coach Phil Zelaya decides to go for 2 late in the game rather than kick the extra point and a tie and go to overtime. He gets it and the Cats win the title.

CIF-SS semifinal football results; Finals set

Friday’s CIF-SS semifinal results, with San Bernardino County teams in bold.

Perhaps the most surprising was the margin of the Rim victory. I predicted the Scots would win, but not by 49 points. By the way, our staff writer Ed Castro had Rim’s Jacob Taylor with 355 yards rushing and seven touchdowns, which would put him at 3,750 rushing yards and 54 touchdowns for the season in 13 games, although the official stats aren’t into maxpreps.com yet. Regardless, he is more than likely the No. 2 rusher in the nation according to maxpreps. That was his spot entering Friday’s games.

I am impressed by the quiet run Kaiser has made. The Cats were nearly forgotten after getting blown out by Summit to open league, but have come up clutch in the last few weeks in winning 7 in a row. Interesting stat: In its last 9 games (during which the Cats are 8-1), Kaiser has scored 14 points or less five times (going 4-1, including all 3 playoff games) and scored over 40 points in each of the other four games (going 4-0).

INLAND DIVISION
Vista Murrieta 34, Rancho Cucamonga 0
Corona Centennial 46, Upland 36
Final: Corona Centennial at Vista Murrieta, Friday
CENTRAL DIVISION
Moreno Valley Rancho Verde 35, Menifee Paloma Valley 28
Kaiser 13, Romoland Heritage 7
Final: Kaiser at Rancho Verde, Saturday
EASTERN DIVISION
Perris Citrus Hill 37, Hemet Tahquitz 0
Serrano 21, Carter 14
Final: Serrano at Citrus Hill, Friday
EAST VALLEY DIVISION
Ontario Christian 34, Jurupa Hills 33 (OT)
Rim of the World 69, Banning 20
Final: Ontario Christian at Rim of the World, Friday

This week’s CIF-SS semifinal football picks

I am out of town this week, but keeping close tabs on this week’s CIF-SS semifinal games, so here are my predictions for Friday’s games.

Game I’m most interested in? Banning-Rim. That’s because I was at the first matchup and Banning’s Sty Hairston and Rim’s Jacob Taylor are two dynamic runners who were nearly unstoppable in a 49-41 Banning win, combining for 800 yards by my count. Now they’re back at it at Rim. My prediction is also that the winner of that game will win the CIF title.

I’m also very interested in Carter-Serrano, obviously for a very different reason. These teams have been on a collision course since early in the season, but haven’t played. Both lost in the semifinals last year, in different divisions.

INLAND DIVISION
Vista Murrieta 42, Rancho Cucamonga 17
Corona Centennial 52, Upland 35
CENTRAL DIVISION
Rancho Verde 30, Paloma Valley 27
Heritage 24. Kaiser 21
EASTERN DIVISION
CItrus Hill 41, Tahquitz 34
Serrano 17, Carter 14
EAST VALLEY DIVISION
Ontario Christian 40, Jurupa Hills 32
Rim of the World 49, Banning 45
