Double-A Arkansas first baseman C.J. Cron
was among eight Angels prospects listed on the preliminary rosters for the 2013 Arizona Fall League season Tuesday.
Infielder Taylor Lindsey, catcher Jett Bandy, outfielder Zach Borenstein and pitchers R.J. Alvarez, Cam Bedrosian, Mike Morin and Michael Roth are the other Angels scheduled to play for the Mesa Solar Sox. Bill Richardson, who is currently managing the Angels’ Pioneer League affiliate in Orem, Utah, will manage the club.
Roth made his major-league debut earlier this season and has appeared in 15 games (one start) with the Angels. Cron entered the 2013 season as the Angels’ third-ranked prospect by Baseball America, Lindsey seventh and Alvarez eighth. Borenstein was recently named MVP of the California League and sang the national anthem at an Inland Empire 66ers game.
The Mesa roster will be comprised of prospects from the Angels, A’s, Cubs, Nationals and Tigers organizations and will play its home games at Hohokam Stadium. The Arizona Fall League season begins Oct. 8.
The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that outfielder Brandon Bayardi, the Angels’ 36th-round draft pick out of UNLV in 2012, has been suspended 50 games without pay for violating the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
Bayardi, who is on the roster of the rookie-level Orem Owls of the Pioneer League, tested positive for Methylhexaneamine. The 22-year-old was hitting .252/.310/.394 with five home runs in 37 games for Orem.
Mike Trout was removed in the fifth inning of the Angels’ game against the Houston Astros on Sunday with tightness in his right hamstring.
Update: “It’s all right. I’m just sore,” Trout told reporters after the game. “It’s not like it popped or anything. It was just a little grabbing, so it shouldn’t be too serious. … I’ll see how it is tomorrow. I came out just because I didn’t want it to get worse. It’s definitely frustrating when you can’t be out there. For me as a speed guy, I’ve got to take care of my legs.”
Trout has reached base safely in 40 consecutive games and is second in the American League in batting average at .333.
Trout was replaced in center field by right fielder Collin Cowgill. Kole Calhoun took over for Cowgill in right.
