VIDEO: Early enrollees meet with the media after second-to-last spring practice

Lots of videos today: We had the UCLA media debuts for many early enrollees. In total, we have freshmen Mique Juarez, Lokeni Toailoa and JJ Molson, junior college transfers Takkarist McKinley, who transferred in the middle of 2014 last season (whoops), and Nick Terry, and redshirt freshman Cordell Broadus.

Jim Mora also stopped by to talk about Saturday’s Spring Showcase and the Dan Guerrero controversy.

The Bruins wrapped up the first week of spring practice Saturday with their first practice in full pads.

Read today’s notebook that focuses on the team’s balance of coaching and competition

Notes and observations:

Jim Mora was happy with the team’s ability to practice safely in pads (i.e. minimal tackling to the ground, not going after collisions too aggressively, etc.) while still maintaining physicality and competitiveness.

— False starts continue to be a problem under the new snap counts, and Mora attributed it to “a lack of concentration.” The head coach noted that the problem generally improves as practice goes on, so he would like to see better concentration at the start of the session. Offensive lineman Kenny Lacy was probably the most penalized player on Saturday and spent a large amount of time running laps for false starting. Spring practice day 2: Defense wins scrimmage, offense progressing

Day 2 is in the books.

Here’s a notebook from practice, focusing about the team’s commitment to physical play on both sides of the ball.

Watch post-practice interviews here with clips from Tom Bradley, Marques Tuiasosopo, Kenny Young and Eldridge Massington. Scroll down in this post for full interviews with Bradley and Tuiasosopo.

Here are some notes/observations from practice:

— After a rough day on Tuesday, the offense was a lot sharper during the two scrimmage periods. It wasn’t enough to outshine the defense though, as the offense “lost” the second scrimmage and had to run. Head coach Jim Mora kept a tally of which side won each play (i.e. if the defense made a stop or if the offense gained the necessary yardage) and the defense ended up winning on the last play. The offense was sentenced to running the length of the field. Offensive coaches ran too, just much slower than the players.

Josh Rosen had some good throws during practice, including a 50-yard strike to Kenny Walker. It was slightly underthrown, but Walker made a great adjustment to catch it over a defender. Rosen also sent a good deep throw to Darren Andrews during the 7-on-7 period.

Eldridge Massington caught a few good passes in the middle of the field. He said after practice that he and Rosen are developing a good relationship, and that he tells the quarterback to “throw me the dang ball.” Continue reading “Spring practice day 2: Defense wins scrimmage, offense progressing” »

Receiver Theo Howard among 2016 signees enrolled at UCLA

UCLA has lost five players as early entries into the 2016 NFL draft, but are set to welcome just as many newcomers this week.

Five 2016 recruits have enrolled as Bruins, according to the UCLA Registrar: receiver Theo Howard, linebacker Breland Brandt, linebacker Lokeni Toailoa, defensive back Leni Toailoa, and kicker JJ Molson.

Monday is the first day of classes for UCLA’s winter quarter. Molson’s arrival in Westwood will be delayed by a week, due to his participation in the Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 9 in San Antonio.

Quarterback Matt Lynch, receiver Demetric Felton and defensive tackle Nick Terry have also signed financial aid agreements with UCLA, but are not yet listed on the registrar.

Former Boise State defensive tackle Nick Terry commits to UCLA

UCLA needs to add depth to its defensive line. Nick Terry could help.

After a false start to his collegiate career at Boise State, the 6-foot-4, 295-pound tackle committed to the Bruins on Thursday night. The three-star JUCO prospect will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Seven games into his redshirt sophomore season at American River College in Sacramento, Terry has notched 42 tackles and four sacks. He had originally signed with Boise State in 2013, redshirting his first season before playing just one game last fall. The Pleasant Grove High product left the Broncos in September, but finished out the semester before transferring closer to home.

UCLA did not sign any defensive tackles this past spring, and could lose starting nose tackle Kenny Clark to the NFL draft.

Terry is the third defensive line recruit committed to UCLA’s 2016 class, after defensive end Marcus Moore and defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa — the younger brother of former Bruin star Owa Odighizuwa.
