Hector Santiago added to All-Star roster

Angels starting pitcher Hector Santiago will replace Oakland’s Sonny Gray on the American League All-Star roster.

Gray pitched for the A’s on Sunday and is not eligible to play in Tuesday’s All-Star Game.

Santiago threw 106 pitches in seven innings against Seattle on Friday, and allowed eight hits. He struck out seven and allowed just one run and is now 6-4 with an ERA of 2.33, third-lowest in the AL among starters.

Santiago joins teammates Mike Trout and Albert Pujols on the American League squad. Trout and Pujols will start the game in Cincinnati.

Five things to take from Angels’ 7-3 victory at Seattle

– The biggest thing about this victory is that it pulled the Angels within a half-game of first-place Houston in the AL West. The Angels (47-39) have won 10 of 12 heading into Saturday’s game at Seattle.

– Wow, what a game by Mike Trout. All the All-Star centerfielder did was hit his 25th and 26th home runs and drive in four. By going 3-for-5, Trout raised his average to .309. He is now tied for the league and team lead in home runs with teammate Albert Pujols. Trout’s 54 RBIs are second on the team to Pujols’ 56. Trout leads the team in on-base-percentage (.401), slugging (.618) and OPS (1.019).

C.J. Cron continued his hot hitting since being recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake City on June 29. In eight games he has hit four home runs and driven in 11 while hitting .448 (13-for-29). Cron went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs in this one.

Hector Santiago threw 106 pitches in seven innings and allowed eight hits. But he struck out seven and allowed just one run and is now 6-4 with an ERA of 2.33, third-lowest in the AL among starters.

Vinnie Pestano had just been recalled from Salt Lake because closer Huston Street is working through a groin injury. Pestano pitched to just two batters in the ninth inning of what was not a save opportunity. He hit a batter and gave up a 430-foot, two-run home run to former Angel Mark Trumbo. Not the best way to return to the majors. Manager Mike Scioscia took no chances and immediately replaced Pestano with Fernando Salas, who retired the next three batters to end the game. Salas struck out two of the three.

When closer Huston Street sustained a groin injury on Wednesday, that left the Angels short in the bullpen. After sending outfielder/first baseman Efren Navarro down to Triple-A Salt Lake City on Thursday, the Angels on Friday recalled right-handed reliever Vinnie Pestano from Salt Lake.

Navarro, out of Lynwood High, was hitting .260 with no home runs and five RBIs in 77 at-bats.

Pestano was 1-0 with an ERA of 4.22 in 17 appearances with the Angels before being sent down in late May. He was 0-3 with an ERA of 4.41 in 15 games at Salt Lake. He struck out 19 and walked four in 16 1/3 innings and had a WHIP of 0.98.

Street was not placed on the disabled list, but figures to be out until after the All-Star break.

Albert Pujols has confirmed that he will participate in the home-run derby Monday in Cincinnati, the day before the All-Star game there at Great American Ball Park.

Pujols this week was selected to play in the game and will start at first base for injured Miguel Cabrera. He told the Associated Press that he only wanted to be in the home-run derby if he was selected to the American League All-Star squad.

“You want to be in the game,” he said. “That’s the most important thing because you want to be able to have a chance to help the American League have home field advantage (in the World Series).”

Pujols leads the AL in home runs with 25. He previously competed in the home-run derby in 2003, 2007 and 2009. He has never won.
