PITTSBURGH — The Dodgers dug themselves an early 4-run deficit against the Pirates for the second consecutive day Monday. This time they came from behind to win, 5-4. The box score is here.

Adrian Gonzalez gave himself an extra day on the bench this weekend — then singled as a late-game replacement.

Pirates ace Gerrit Cole, a star at UCLA and Orange Lutheran, doesn’t sound like a man who intends to pitch in Southern California again anytime soon.

Adrian Gonzalez will be held out of the starting lineup the next two days.

PITTSBURGH — One day after saying Adrian Gonzalez would not start the final game of the Dodgers’ four-game series against the Pirates, Dave Roberts decided to tack on another day off for his first baseman.

Scott Van Slyke gets the start at first today, batting eighth against right-hander Chad Kuhl, who is making his major league debut for the Pirates.

The Dodgers dodged a bullet when Adrian Gonzalez told manager Dave Roberts he was feeling better one day after he left Monday’s game against the Angels with lower back tightness.

Gonzalez still hasn’t spoken to reporters since he left the stadium last night. He wasn’t seen in the clubhouse or on the field for pregame activities Tuesday. But Roberts said he was hopeful that Gonzalez would be able to pinch hit tonight, though he would not be available to play the field. Howie Kendrick is starting at first base instead.

Roberts said that the Dodgers aren’t considering placing Gonzalez on the disabled list at the moment and it’s possible he could play tomorrow in Anaheim.

Gonzalez, 34, is the only Dodger who’s appeared in all 39 games this season. He’s batting .282 with four home runs and 20 RBIs, tied for the team lead.
