Postgame Thoughts: Angels lose 7-1; Jered Weaver looks ready.

Jered Weaver had already left the ballpark as the Angels’ bullpen was busy ruining his handiwork. He won’t have that luxury of leaving early next week.

In most other ways Tuesday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, a 7-1 Angels loss at Salt River Fields, had to feel like a regular-season game for Weaver. The Angels’ Opening Day starter allowed two hits, no runs, walked one and struck out three in his final start of spring training. Weaver needed only 87 pitches to get through seven innings.

“It was nice to get under the lights and go out the way you would in the regular season,” Weaver said. “I always try to treat the last game of spring training like a regular season game.”

That he did, against a Diamondbacks lineup that featured at least seven of eight Opening Day position players. (Though it should be noted that three — Jason Kubel, Willie Bloomquist and Aaron Hill, who was hit in the pinkie finger by a Weaver pitch — left with injuries).

Angels, Diamondbacks rained (winded, and hailed) out.

The Angels’ game against the Arizona Diamondbacks was called due to inclement weather in the third inning with the game tied 1-1. An on-again, off-again rainfall gave way to heavy wind and hail around 2:40 p.m. local time, forcing everyone off the field at Tempe Diablo Stadium.

What few statistics were compiled in the game won’t count at the end of spring training.

There was a purpose to the game, even if it was mostly lost upon fans — and there were plenty of fans Friday despite pregnant pregame clouds and forecasts of rain. First pitch was delayed about 25 minutes. During the delay, Mike Scioscia and Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson met on the field to figure out what the other wanted to accomplish.

“They needed some guys to throw,” Scioscia said. “(Brad) Ziegler needed to pitch. It’s usually you need your guys to stay up on innings. That’s what we needed. Joe (Blanton) got his work in and finished up a little bit in the ‘pen. He wanted to throw some pitches out of the stretch.

“Believe me, we milked about every pitch we could out of today. We got something accomplished.”

Josh Hamilton seems very comfortable here. As in, ‘Here Josh, use my bat’ comfortable.

Josh Hamilton

For his first day playing a game in an Angels uniform, Josh Hamilton did not bring enough bats.

Hamilton had three bats when the day began Tuesday. He broke one in batting practice. The other two broke in the game. When he looked down to see a crack in his lumber after fouling a pitch off in the fifth inning, at least he had a contingency plan in place.

“I told (Mark Trumbo) before the game, If I break one I’m going to come and get yours,” Hamilton said.

The bat broke, and Trumbo obliged.
