San Bernardino schools athletic departments scramble in wake of shootings

Sports were the last thing on everyone’s mind when 14 people were killed in a mass shooting at Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino midday Wednesday.
But sports were nonetheless impacted.
All San Bernardino City Unified School District schools were on lockdown after the shooting, as the shooters were on the loose.
SBCUSD then chose to cancel all after-school activities including sports. The biggest high school athletic event in the city Wednesday was the Dolores Dudek Tournament, a girls basketball tournament co-hosted by Arroyo Valley and Sab Gorgonio.
Arroyo Valley athletic director Matt Howell and his counterpart at San Gorgonio, Matt Maeda scrambled to call teams to make sure they weren’t coming to San Bernardino
There were only four games scheduled between the two sites Wednesday. With Wednesday’s postponement, each site will host four games beginning at 3 p.m., with six schools playing twice Thursday. No team will play in back-to-back games Thursday, however.is
Essentially, all after-school activities, both on- and off-campus were cancelled. However, because of the time they had to leave, Arroyo Valley’s girls soccer team was already on its way to Victor Valley. The SBCUSD said any busses that left would not be required to turn around. Arroyo Valley’s boys basketball tournament we set to go to Riverside for a tournament, but when the bus arrived at the school, it was sent away without any student athletes. pe
With both shooting suspects now dead, athletic directors expected athletic events to return to normal on Thursday.
