Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has good answer in response to question about potential

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez of Mexico just turned 23 in July. But he has 43 fights, and he is 42-0-1 with 30 knockouts, so he has accomplished a lot. He was asked Tuesday at his training camp in Big Bear about his potential, and he came with a pretty cool response.

“I’ve always said that I’ve never fought to my potential, but that’s because I’ve never had an opponent to bring it out,” said Alvarez, who will take on Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a junior middleweight title fight Sept. 14 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas (on Showtime pay-per-view). “I feel that maybe Mayweather will be the one to bring it out.”

Mayweather, 36, is 44-0 with 26 knockouts and is the consensus king of the pound-for-pound poll.

Bob Arum: Floyd Mayweather will be too much for Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez

Bob Arum was Floyd Mayweather’s promoter for the first several years of Mayweather’s professional career, so he knows a thing or two about the fighter formerly nicknamed “Pretty Boy,” but who now uses “Money” as his moniker.

Arum on Thursday was asked to chime in on the upcoming Sept. 14 showdown between Mayweather and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez of Mexico. They will tangle in a junior middleweight title fight at MGM Grand in Las Vegas (on Showtime pay-per-view).

“I think Floyd is way too experienced for him,” Arum said during lunch at Off Vine in Hollywood. “And I wouldn’t be that surprised if late in the fight Mayweather knocks him out. That’s how I see it.”

The fight is being co-promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions. Arum has an ongoing feud with Golden Boy, but Arum said he will order the pay-per-view feed, which will cost $64.95.

“Sure, Yom Kippur is over (the evening of Sept. 14),” said Arum, who is Jewish. “We do a breakfast at our house for over 100 people, so we’re going to buy the fight and it comes to less than a dollar a person.”

Arum and his guests laughed.

Floyd Mayweather, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez begin long press tour at Times Square

Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on Monday kicked off their 11-city press tour at Times Square in New York City. They will tangle in a junior middleweight title-unification bout on Sept. 14 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas (on Showtime pay-per-view).

The tour, which went to Washington D.C. on Tuesday, will shift to Mayweather’s hometown of Grand Rapids, Mich., on Wednesday and eventually culminate July 2 at Nokia Plaza in downtown Los Angeles at 7:30 p.m.; it is open to the public.

The fight will take place on Mexican Independence Day weekend. Since Alvarez is from Mexico, and about as popular as a fighter can be there, he could very well have more fans in the arena on fight night. Mayweather is cool with that.

“Mexico has produced some legendary champions; I take my hat off to them,” he said. “I respect the country of Mexico, but something I’ve always enjoyed about the sport of boxing is that my fans can’t fight for me and his fans can’t fight for him.”

Speaking in front of thousands at Times Square, Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KOs) recognized what he’s up against in attempting to hand Mayweather (44-0, 26 KOs) his first defeat.

“I’m younger and bigger, which are very important keys,” said Alvarez, 22; Mayweather is 36. “But you must remember that Floyd is a very intelligent fighter. But I’m going to have the right game plan.”

Richard Schaefer: If Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez beats Floyd Mayweather Jr., look out

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather Jr. will tangle Sept. 14 in a junior middleweight title-unification bout at MGM Grand in Las Vegas (on Showtime pay-per-view). If Alvarez hands Mayweather (44-0, 26 KOs) his first defeat, Richard Schaefer believes the aftermath could be unprecedented.

Alvarez, just 22, is treated like a rock star in his native Mexico. He also has a huge following in the U.S., what with its large population of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans.

“If ‘Canelo’ wins, can you imagine what that would do?” said Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, which promotes Alvarez. “Oh my gosh. He sold 40,000 tickets (for his fight against Austin Trout in April in San Antonio) before beating a Mayweather. So can you just imagine? I can see him fighting at the Coliseum right here in downtown Los Angeles in front of 150,000 people and setting an all-time record.”

Alvarez is 42-0-1 with 30 knockouts.
