Jaylon Dean transfers from Kaiser to Ganesha
Christmas came a little early for Ganesha football coach Don Cayer.
Jaylon Dean has transferred from Sunkist League champion Kaiser to Ganesha, Cayer confirmed.
The CIF has already ruled him eligible for the coming season. Dean, a 5-foot-10, 225 pounder, is expected to make an immediate impact.
“He will be a difference maker, especially on defense because that’swhere he has played the most,” Cayer said. “We have some skill players on offense but he gives us more options there.
Dean was an All-League selection last year on defense with 53 tackles and four sacks. Cayer says he will use him on both sides of the ball.
“We don’t get a transfer of this caliber that often,” he said. “We’re talking an All-League kid on a first place team. We’re excited to have him.”
Ganesha opens the season at Mark Keppel on Aug. 28.

Will Summit’s immense talent translate into a league title?

Running back Stephen Carr, who is verbally committed to USC, is one of four Summit players with Division-I scholarship offers entering the 2015 season.
The SkyHawks football team enters the 2015 season with four players sporting Division-I offers, including Damian Alloway’s list of 16. Had he not committed to USC nearly two years before he could sign a letter of intent, running back Stephen Carr would presumably have more than five scholarship offers.
After becoming the first school other than Kaiser to win a Sunkist League championship – Summit claimed consecutive league titles in 2011 and 2012 – the SkyHawks have finished second the last two seasons. But talent hasn’t been much of an issue, according to head coach Nick Matheny.
“With our three guys at the skill positions, we’re pretty loaded,” Matheny said. “But we were talented last year too and we were only able to pull out six wins.”

Diamond Ranch HS to host college basketball expo for high school players
Are you a boys basketball player in their senior year of high school or at a junior college who feels they have been overlooked? Well, there is an event coming up that will interest you.
Diamond Ranch High School will host a college showcase designed to hook prospective players up with college programs. It will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday and is open to athletes from all schools.
Players will each compete in at least three games in order to showcase their skills. They will also get an update on new academic regulations that will directly affect them.
A dozen or so college coaches from NAIA, Division II and Division III schools will be on hand. There will also be some reps from community colleges.
The cost is $50.
Last year 10 players who participated got college spots.

Memories of Late Daily Facts Reporter Ed Castro
I really enjoyed working with Ed Castro (who passed away Tuesday night) during his time at the Daily Facts. Since the Sun and Daily Fats both cover Redlands and we’re the same company, we’d trade information, coordinate coverage and sometimes even be at the same events. That included several REV football games last year.
It also included the Arrowhead Christian championship game and we shared a motel room in Nipomo. That one didn’t end too well. I was leaving early on Sunday morning, while Ed was going to stay in the area to watch football with some friends. He awoke on Sunday to find me, about ready to leave, and a maintenance person mopping up after I flooded the bathroom (don’t ask). Ed would only give me a hard time about it when I brought it up. But he was a good guy who didn’t seem bothered.
Ed was a good guy who worked hard, cared about sports in Redlands had a great sense of humor and was very humble. He could be a bit insecure, because while he covered the day-to-day events in Redlands, I would come in and cover the bigger events, and he would refer to me, with perhaps a bit of sarcasm as “The A Team.” Ed, you were the real A team.

Gabe Schaefer leaves Bloomington High wrestling, but Bruins should be OK
Maybe you saw in the paper or on our website that the coach who built the Bloomington High wrestling program into a CIF-SS champion, Gabe Schaefer, is leaving.
Above, Schaefer talks about winning the CIF-SS Individual Tournament team title for the first time this season.
Here are my thoughts. I have a huge amount of respect for Gabe as a coach and his ability to build a winning program with kids who were willing and able, but did not have much experience before high school.
I don’t blame him for leaving for Clovis, the most powerful program in the state. He is not a casual wrestling coach, so the opportunity to coach the best team in the state is hard to pass up, so I don’t blame him.
He will be missed (by the school and by me). But when Schaefer last year brought on Vince LaFarge, who was a big part of the coaching success at Covina Northview, he made for a smoother transition. It’s hard to say that LaFarge will be able to continue the success that Schaefer started. It could be better, or not quite as good. But it will be good. LaFarge is a veteran coach who has had a year for the kids to know him.
The kids just need to stick with him. His success in his career speaks for itself, and hopefully the Bloomington kids will listen.

Rancho Cucamonga HS to host Team USA scrimmage
Rancho Cucamonga High School will be the site of a scrimmage featuring the USA Women’s National Volleyball team. The event is being hosted by the school in conjunction with Forza Volleyball.
It will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday. Volleyball legend Karch Kiraly, the national team coach, will conduct a question and answer session at 5:45 p.m. Players will also be available for pictures and autographs after the scrimmage.
The USA Team is currently ranked No 1 in the world and is currently preparing for a series of matches against China, one to be held at UC Irvine on June 9 and the other June 12 at Cal State San Bernardino.
“It’s a great opportunity for people in the community to see the highest level of volleyball,” says Rancho Cucamonga program head Brandon Blevins. “We’re honored to be able to have the match here at our school.”Blevins said
There is no cost of those 18-under. The admission charge for others is just $5 with that going toward team expenses.

Day 5: CIFSS Division 2 Swimming Prelims Coverage
The Girls 200 IM will feature a number of local coverage area swimmers.
Freshman Mikki Thompson of Ayala finished with the fastest time among area swimmers with a time of 2 minutes and 06.03 seconds, which lead to her being seeded third going into the championship race. 
Kathleen Gani of Diamond Bar is seeded No. 6 while Mikayla Jean of Redlands East Valley is seeded at No. 9. Gani had a time of 2:07.10 while Jean had a time of 2:08.28.
Emily Longfellow of REV finished third in the Girls 200 IM and is seeded at No. 10, placing her in the consolation finals. Longfellow missed a chance at the championship race by .02 after posting a time of 2:08.30.
Longfellow also competed in the 200 Medley Relay to meet the meet along with REV teammates, Alexa Melara, Autumn D’Arcy and Emily Rigsby. REV finished with a time of 1:48.29.
Redlands (Melissa Pepper, Summer D’Arcy, Niki Proctor and Alex Zak ) placed No. 6 going into the championship race with a time of 1:48.97.
Diamond Bar will also compete in the race as the No. 7 seed after a time of 1:49.37 in the prelims. Diamond Bar’s team consist of Gani, Jenna Lloyd, Kelly Cheng and Kelsey Lloyd.
For Ayala, Kenisha Liu qualified for the 100 yard free championship race following a prelim time of 51.21. Rigsby will compete in the consolation race.

STORY/VIDEOS: Aquinas’ Zoe Casas sets new CIF-SS, ties state record
The rain fell, but Aquinas senior softball player Zoe Casas did was she always does: she hit.
Casas went 3-for-3 as Aquinas downed Loma Linda Academy 8-0 in a four-inning, rain-shortened game at Aquinas High School.
Aquinas (21-3 overall, 13-1 Ambassador League) earned a share of the league title.
The hits gave Florida-State bound Casas 244 for her career, setting a new CIF-SS career mark, breaking the old mark of 242 set by Santa Ana Mater Dei’s Kelsey Kollen from 1995-98. She tied the state career record, set by Brenna Moss of Bakersfield North from 2008-11.
“It means so much to me,” she said. “It means my hard work and dedication has actually paid off, to do something for my small school.”
“You share a league title, seven in a row,” Aquinas coach Chris Ybarra said. “That’s something to be really proud of. On top of that, you want Zoe to break the record, and she gets three hits.”
Thursday’s was Aquinas’ last regular season game, so Casas will have a chance to break the state record in the first round of the playoffs next Thursday. Casas has a hit in every game this season, has at least two hits in 19 straight games and is batting an incredible .740.
