Jaelan Phillips will play vs Citrus Valley

He tried to get back into the football game last week, but it looks like he’ll be back in this week.
Redlands East Valley High School standout defensive end/linebacker Jaelan Phillips, a UCLA commit, broke his hand early in the second half of last week’s 38-32 win over Cajon and tried to go back in.
“It was friendly fire, a helmet on his hand,” REV coach Kurt Bruich said. “He wanted to come back in, but they (medical staff) wouldn’t let him.”
Phillips, who lines up at several different spots on the field, would leave a hole if he wasn’t able to play.
“He has a backup, so we’d plug him in,” Bruick said. “It does eliminate some of the defenses we run, because of what Jaelan is able to do. But, if I was a betting man, I’d say he’s going to play.”
Bruich said that before practice. By the end of the day, he indicated that Phillips will play this week against Citrus Valley and Phillips sent out pictures on social media of his cast on his right hand.

Redlands high jumper Alisha Edwards verbally commits to UCLA

Alisha Edwards of Redlands High School verbally committed to UCLA track and field program following her official visit over the weekend.

“UCLA not only has a stellar academic program but the team is equally amazing,” Edwards said. “The members of the track team made me feel so welcomed and they are just a genuine group of people. The coaching staff is great and I felt a great vibe as soon as I arrived (on campus).”

Despite competing in other events as a member of the RHS Terriers’ track & field program, she plans to only compete as a high jumper.

But before she can wear the blue and gold, she will represent the Terriers for her senior season.

“My goal (for my senior) season is to progress mentally and physically as an athlete,” she said. “I am definitely looking to reach my personal record in the high jump and repeat at CIF. My number one goal is state.”

With a personal record of 5 foot 8 inches, Edwards is no stranger to CIF and the competitive journey that comes with reaching the event. She was a member of the back-to-back CIF Southern Section Division 2 championship teams.

While she finished second at CIF-SS in 2015, she earned an individual high jump title in 2014.

Carter High’s Leni Toailoa verbally commits to UCLA

UPDATED: Carter High safety Leni Toailoa decommitted from San Jose State to verbally commit to the UCLA Bruins’ football program, an offer he has had since July.

“It’s a big relief,” Toailoa said. “I was ready to be done with the process.”

The safety, ranked 13th in the West by Scout.com at the position, is commit No. 18 for the Bruins’ 2016 recruiting class that includes his older brother and high school teammate, Lokeni.

Carter coach Alex Pierce stated that he was not surprised with Leni’s commitment to UCLA, but he “thought there was one other school in the running, Arizona State. They were the first PAC-12 school to offer him but being around family was important to him.”

Lokeni announced his decision to go to UCLA at a ceremony in Rancho Cucamonga, the same event in which Leni made his verbal commitment to San Jose State on March 23.

The flip to UCLA places the brothers on a defense once again following their career at Carter High.

“It wasn’t anything,” said Leni, in regards to telling his brother about his decision. “We always knew we were going to go play together in college.”

The Toailoa brothers will led the Carter defense on Friday in its game against defending state champions, Redlands East Valley.

UCLA and USC offer Redlands East Valley LB Jaelan Phillips

UPDATED: After being offered by the USC Trojans the morning of Sept. 19, Redlands East Valley junior linebacker Jaelan Phillips confirmed that he has now been offered by the UCLA Bruins.

It is his fourth offer this week and the fourth of his five offers to come from a Pac-12 program.

“It has honestly been surreal…it is a dream come true in every sense of the phrase. Like I said before I am just honored and blessed to receive these offers especially from schools that are so highly esteemed,” he said. “It is a feeling like no other to be able to choose where I want to play Division 1 football but for now I can just focus on the season ahead of me.”

While Phillips has not verbally committed to any program at the moment, he stated earlier this week that UCLA is his dream school.

“I have been a lifelong UCLA fan because my dad, grandpa and grandma went there,” he explained. “But I am really open minded and just honored to get any offers.”

With his parents on hand, the 3-star prospect stated that the moment was very special.

“It was definitely one of the best moments I’ve had with my parents,” he said. “We just looked at each other, shook our heads and smiled from cheek to cheek. It was a really strong moment.”

Not only can Phillips hold his own on the football field, but he maintains a 4.1 GPA in the classroom.

“When you take care of your academics, colleges aren’t afraid to offer you early,” said Kurt Bruich, REV head coach. “Jaelan is a great example of that. He has been blessed with a D1 body and athleticism, as so many are but his attention to detail in the classroom is what sets him apart.”

Bruich will be the first to tell you that he has seen growth on the field from Phillips, after participating in last year’s CIF State Championship run.

“Truthfully. He got lucky last year. He was the right man in the right spot in the state final. The rest of the year, he was like a new born calf that was growing into his body and feet,” Bruich explained. “This year, he’s getting it. He understands what his position is and his responsibilities.”

Only being a junior allows plenty of time for the linebacker to continue his process of development.

“Colleges see his size, frame and potential,” Bruich added. “The sky is the limit for this young man. I just hope he will continue to humble himself and grow.”

Rancho Cucamonga’s Kylie Miller reaches 1,000 career kills

On her 17th birthday, UCLA commit and Rancho Cucamonga volleyball player Kylie Miller reached the 1,000 career kills milestone in the game against Citrus Valley.

“I thought it would be a great memory (to reach the milestone on her birthday),” she said. “It wasn’t my focus today but it was great to know that it happened. I think my teammates were more aware of what was happening than I was.”

Miller was informed by the coaching staff this week that the milestone was insight.

She entered the game with 991 career kills and surpassed the milestone with a 20-kill performance against the Blackhawks, defeating the team in three.

“We didn’t play our best game but we pulled through and got the win,” Miller said.

The Cougars have expectations going forward this season with the overall goal of winning CIF.

“I am very excited about my team this year. We all have great chemistry on and off the court,” Miller explained. “We have high expectations for ourselves as we head into league play. Our goal this season is to win CIF and we are all very motivated to reach our goal.”

UCLA commit Lokeni Toailoa sets example on Twitter following ejection

What Carter High linebacker and UCLA commit Lokeni Toailoa did with his Twitter account should serve as an example for fellow athletes to follow.

IMG_9909.JPG

Carter High linebacker Lokeni Toailoa, third player located on the right, is committed to UCLA.

Following a call by the referee that led to the ejection of Toailoa in Friday’s game against Los Osos, which will cause him to miss Carter’s upcoming game against city-rival Rialto High, the four-star linebacker decided to remove his Twitter page.

Whether any highly recruited athlete will admit it or not, they are always under the microscope and face constant pressure because of their status and talent.

By removing oneself from a social media platform like Twitter, Toailoa avoided all drama that can come from social media users, while at the same time allowing him as a player to reflect on the situation and move forward.

Anytime I have spoken with Lokeni, he has been nothing but respectful.

While it was a bit shocking to hear he was ejected from a game, I think the way he went about handling his business off the field, with what I am assuming is a brief stint away from the website, was done honorably.

This generation’s high school athletes do not realize just how easy it is to lose a scholarship or interest from a college because of their actions. In a case like this, being poked at and responding in a particular way could be enough to lose it all.

Another Ball brother, LaMelo, picks UCLA

From Staff Writer Michelle Gardner:

A third Ball is headed to UCLA.

No not Lonzo or younger brother LiAngelo. It’s the youngest of the family.

LaMelo Ball, 13, the youngest brother in the basketball playing family said today he too has committed to the Bruins even though he has yet to play a high school game.

“It is my dream school,” he said. “I decided to get it out of the way now instead of waiting for the future.”

Other schools looking at the youngest Ball included Virginia and Washington State but he opted to follow his brothers, although he said that wasn’t a major factor.

Lonzo, who will be a senior this fall, committed to the Bruins as a sophomore and last year as a sophomore LiAngelo did the same. All three will play together for the Huskies but they won;t be together at UCLA even for a year because Lonzo has made it known he wants to be “one and done” at UCLA.

The three brothers on the same floor will be a marquee attraction this winter. The three brothers combined for 93 points in a recent travel ball game for Big Ballers.

Here is the video from MaxPreps of that performance:

Could Leni Toailoa go to UCLA too?

Two Toailoas to UCLA?
Well-decorated Carter linebacker Lokeni Toailoa has already committed to UCLA. Now, his brother, Leni could be joining him there. Leni, recruited as a defensive back, received a scholarship offer to join Lokeni at UCLA this week. The brothers are both seniors at Carter, although Lokeni is older.
According to coach Alex Pierce, Leni is considering the offer, even though he had already given a verbal commitment to San Jose State back in March.
