Bomb threat prompts evacuation of La Habra Walmart store

LA HABRA >> A phoned-in bomb threat disrupted a La Habra Walmart store for a little more than an hour on Saturday before police determined the threat to be unfounded, authorities said.
Police were first notified shortly after noon that staff at Walmart, 1000 E. Imperial Highway, had received a phone call from a man claiming there was a bomb inside the store, La Habra police Lt. Adam Foster said.
Officials evacuated the store, he said. Police searched the building, along with a bomb squad, and found nothing out of the ordinary.
Police declared the scene safe about 1:30 p.m., and the business resumed operation, he said.
An investigation into who placed the threatening call was underway.

Man subdued in Azusa park after threatening violence against police

AZUSA >> Police used a less-lethal bean bag shotgun to subdue a man who threatened police while claiming to have a gun at a park in Azusa on Friday, officials said.
The incident began just before noon when police received a call from a man who said he was at Zacateca’s Park, 924. W. First Street, Azusa police Cpl. Billy Johnson said in a written statement.
The man told police he was armed with a handgun, “and ready to engage with police using his firearm,” the corporal said. The caller described himself to police and told them his position within the park.
“Due to several people in the park, including a group of mentally disabled subjects and their caretakers, officers composed a tactical plan of approach to safely detain to the subject,” Johnson said. “Officers simultaneously secured the several subjects in the park as other officers approached the subject.”
The man failed to comply with officers’ orders, at which point they shot him with a bean bag round fired by a shotgun, according to Johnson. The man fell to the ground and was taken to a hospital for evaluation. He suffered no serious injuries.
No gun was found at the scene, police said.

UPDATED: Social media threat prompts lockdown at South Pasadena High School; student detained

SOUTH PASADENA >> Authorities placed South Pasadena High School on lockdown Friday while they investigated a shooting threat posted on social media, police said.
A student saw an image on the photo and video-sharing app Snapchat threatening gun violence at the high school, 1401 Fremont Ave.
The student reported the threats to officials shortly after the school day began, South Pasadena police Sgt. Spencer Louie said.
“The suspect was identified as a 17-year-old male student,” police said in a written statement. “As a precaution, the school was placed on a modified lockdown and officers were posted at the school.”
“Officers responded to his residence to locate him, but were unsuccessful,” according to the statement. “Additional information was obtained as to the suspect’s whereabouts and he was eventually contacted by phone.”
The teen went to the police station, where he was taken into custody later in the morning, officials said.
The lockdown had been lifted and the campus had resumed normal operations by noon.

South Pasadena teens admit to planning mass shooting; sentenced to probation

SOUTH PASADENA >> Two teenage boys were sentenced to probation Wednesday after admitting they planned a mass shooting at South Pasadena High School in August.
The teens, now 17 and 18, admitted to one felony count of making criminal threats for the plot against their school last year, which was discovered three days before the start of the school year.
The confessions came on what was scheduled to be the first day of trial.
South Pasadena police Detective Sgt. Robert Bartl, who has worked the investigation since the beginning, said he was pleased to see the case come to an end.
“I’m just very happy to see that there’s a resolution to this, and that there were some consequences to their actions,” he said. “I think it’s important for the students and administrators at the school to see the end of this… that they are safe.”

Student at Arroyo High School in El Monte accused of threatening teachers on Twitter

EL MONTE >> Police arrested a 16-year-old Arroyo High School junior Friday after he allegedly posted a threat against two of his teachers online via Twitter, officials said.
School officials first learned of the threat posted on social media about 9:40 a.m. Friday, El Monte police Sgt. Richard Luna said in a written statement.
“A 16-year-old student of the school had posted a specific threat via his ‘Twitter’ account to harm two faculty members,” Luna said. Both victims were the student’s teachers.
Though it was not discovered until Friday, “The threat was posted (Thursday) while the student was in class,” Luna said.
Upon learning of the threat, school officials notified the school resource officer, who investigated the threat and ultimately arrested the student on suspicion of making criminal threats, the sergeant said. No harm came to either of the two teachers named in the threat.

Bassett High on lockdown after shooting threat reported

BASSETT — Authorities locked down Bassett High School Thursday afternoon after receiving reports of a planned shooting on campus.

The report came in about 12:10 p.m. , according to Sheriff’s Sgt. S. Bracken, at the Industry substation.

“It was an anonymous call about a potential shooting,” Bracken said. “Our lieutenants and sergeants are at the scene right now attempting to sort it out.”

The school remains on lockdown.

Bracken said the call came from a concerned parent.

“A kid wanted to come home early because he heard there was going to be a shooting on campus,” Bracken said.

Bracken did not know if the threat was gang related.
