Ayala’s John Edgar makes decision to play at UC Irvine

Ayala basketball standout John Edgar didn’t have a lot of college options when this season started. But he put himself on the radar in a big way in helping the Bulldogs to a CIF Southern Section Division 2AA title as well as a berth in the Division III title game.

The 6-foot-5 forward has committed to UC Irvine, choosing that school over UTEP and Incarnate Word. He also had offers from a handful of Division II schools.

“I really thought it was the best fit for me,” he said. “It’s a good school and it’s close to home so my family can come see me play. I thought it was my best option.”

Perhaps no player made a bigger splash last year than Edgar, who transferred to the school from Chino Hills halfway though his sophomore year.

He was the team’s third leading scorer as a junior but took his game to a whole other level this season.

Edgar emerged as the team’s top scorer, averaging 23 points and 10.3 rebounds. He shot 56 percent from the field and 82 percent from the free-throw line.

The postseason accolades flooded in as soon as the season ended. He was named CIF Player of the Year in Division 2AA and was the John Wooden Award winner for Division II. He was also a first-team All-Inland Valley selection.

“It would have been nice to win that last game,” he said of the Bulldogs loss to Manteca in the state championship game. “But this year couldn’t have been much better. We made history for the school.”

Playing at UC Irvine also means he’ll be going head-to-head with one of his teammates, Austen Awosika, the team’s second-leading scorer who has signed with Cal State Fullerton, also in the Big West Conference.

“Yeah we have talked about it,” he said. “It will be a lot of fun.”

Ayala’s Miles President to play basketball at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps

Ayala senior basketball standout Miles President now knows his college destination – It’s Claremont’s Harvey Mudd College where he’ll study engineering and play for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s basketball team,

That school was his first choice all along with Caltech his second choice. He plans to study engineering.

“I was definitely on edge waiting to see if I got in,” he said. “They’re both small schools so they don’t admit a lot of students.”

President carries a 4.1 grade-point average. He got a perfect ACT score and got an impressive 2,350 in his SAT.

NCAA Division III schools don’t give athletic scholarships and there are no letters-of-intent. His scholarship will be an academic one.

He went to see games at both of his top selections and thinks he can get playing time as a freshman.

Getting into his top choice caps off a stellar season. President helped the Bulldogs (34-4) to a CIF-Southern Section Division 2-AA title, averaging 17.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.

The Bulldogs also fared well in the state portion of the playoffs, finishing as Division III state runner-up, losing the title game to Manteca last month in Sacramento.

“It definitely has been a great season,” he said. “We put in a lot of work and have been playing together so long. It was nice to see everything come together the way it did.”

Ayala’s John Edgar gets Wooden Award

It was quite the breakout season for Ayala basketball standout John Edgar.

He transferred to the school from Chino Hills his sophomore year so it wasn’t until last year he got comfortable there.

This year he wasn’t just the team’s leading scorer and rebounder (23 ppg, 10.3 rpg). He helped the Bulldogs to a CIF Southern Section title as well as a state runner-up finish.

He was CIF Player of Year in Division 2-AA and Edgarwas the Division II recipient of the prestigious Wooden Award.

Festivities were held on Friday, with the high school honorees getting to take in the presentation to the college winner at the Nokia Theater.

“It was a lot of fun being around a lot of great players,” Edgar said. “This season really has been a dream come true for me and this team.”

This season launched Edgar on to the radar of many colleges. He didn’t have a lot of interest before the season started but that has changed. He just got his first offer from Division I Incarnate Word (Tex.).

A lot of Division II schools are also interested.

He is playing travel ball with the OC Pride and will soon be competing in a tournament in Las Vegas that could open more doors.

“I really worked hard on my game and it is all paying off,” Edgar said.

Ayala’s Austen Awosika decides on Cal State Fullerton

Ayala High School point guard Austen Awosika has decided he’ll attend and play at Cal State Fullerton.

Awosika, a 6-foot-2 senior who also carries a 3.5 grade-point average, also visited Pepperdine, Cornell and UC Santa Barbara.

“I really felt like they wanted me,” he said. “They have been to every one of my travel ball games the past few weeks and that really let me know I was a high priority for them.”

Awosika led the Bulldogs to a share of the Palomares League title. He was a Co-MVP in the league, also earning first-team All-CIF honors. He was also a Daily Bulletin All-Inland Valley first-team selection.

Awosika averaged 17.1 points and 6.7 assists with a season high of 34 points coming against Palm Springs.

He said he is relieved to finalize the decision.

“I really want to concentrate on my senior season,” he said. “Now I can just go out there and play free without that pressure.”
