Attention Gabrielino Football, could someone, anyone, contact us for the football preview

We’re down to the wire on the PrepXtra Football Preview Magazine and of 67 teams in the Star-News,Tribune and Whittier Area, the only preview we’re missing is for the Gabrielino HIgh School Football Team. We’ve tried unsuccessfully to reach the coaches and athletic department over the past three weeks, so this is a last-ditch effort for a story and to get players pictured for the magazine. Maybe coaches are on vacation or we’ve got the wrong phone numbers and emails, I’m not sure, but if any coach, parent or player from Gabrielino reads this, please let head coach Harold Sanin know Aram is trying to get in touch with him and can be reached at aram.tolegian@sgvn.com. If you want to reach me, call the office at 626-962-8811, ext. 2161. Thanks, we want to make every effort possible to ensure that every team is included in the football preview magazine.

PASADENA – Ryan Hollins, a former Muir High School basketball standout who now plays in the NBA, can remember how attending a youth basketball camp got him on the road to success.
Now it’s his turn to give back, and he did it with the third Ryan Hollins Skills Basketball Camp, which concluded a three-day session at Muir High School on Wednesday.
“I can remember attending Stacey Augmon’s camp,” Hollins recalled. “I hit a point after my rookie year (in the NBA) that I wanted to start giving back to the community. I don’t think I (really knew) what it was about, but after doing my first (camp) I really developed the love for it, and giving back.
“I’ve always been good about speaking to kids. The camp just manifested my way in giving back to the community and coming back and working. I really invest my time and interest into it. I come here and work my camp. My high school coach comes back, the community comes back, former Muir players. We really come back and give to these kids.”
The three-day camp, which began Monday, instructed young players from ages 8-18 on a variety of skills, but also included topics outside of basketball, including cooperation, teamwork, goal-setting and moral values.
Instructors included former Muir players and coaches and some former Hollins’ camp attendees. The idea for the clinic, which also features some motivational speeches, is to provide youngsters with skills beyond basketball.

2012 Star-News Week by Week Football Schedule

Here’s this week’s 2012 week by week football schedule, with my early predictions of what should be the top games each week in the area. It was a tough call with some weeks having three or four featured games. But a decision had to be made going into the season, and I made it. Of course, as the season transpires and surprises happen, adjustments are always made.
NOTE: I’ve gone with the criteria of week 1, week 2, etc. I find calling it week zero, like the CIF-SS office does, confusing, so I’m going to the traditional beginning of week 1. Think of it like the NFL allows for byes, giving teams 18 weeks to play 16 games, and like NCAA FBS gives schools 14 weeks to play 12 games.

RAMIREZ’S GAMES OF THE WEEK PROJECTIONS
Week 1: Rio Hondo Prep at Arcadia Friday, Aug. 24
Week 2: Arcadia at St. Francis, Friday, Aug. 31
Week 3: San Gabriel at San Dimas, Friday, Sept. 7
Week 4: St. Francis at La Mirada, Friday, Sept. 14
Week 5: Monrovia vs. South Hills at CDF, Thursday, Sept. 20
Week 6: Monrovia at St. Francis, Friday, Sept. 28
Week 7: South El Monte at Rosemead, Friday, Oct. 5
Week 8: Burroughs at Muir, Friday, Oct. 12
Week 9: Maranatha vs. Whittier Chr. at Whittier College, Friday, Oct. 19
Week 10: Chaminade at St. Francis, Friday, Oct. 26
Week 11: Pasadena vs. Muir at Rose Bowl, Friday, Nov. 2
