Summit football left scrambling as season approaches

It’s hard enough going into a new season when you have to replace a player as dominant as Stephen Carr. But Summit coach Nick Matheny is really behind the eight-ball this season because he has had a handful of players, all significant starters, jump ship for other schools.

“We’re basically having to re-invent everything we do,” Matheny said. “The hardest part was that these kids left pretty late in the game so we’re really having to scramble.”

Numbers are down too, something that has been the case at other schools as well. Matheny has just 55 or so between the varsity and junior varsity teams. But the veteran coach is trying to look at the “silver lining.” Other kids who may not have had the opportunity to contribute are getting that chance now and embracing it.

“I can’t say enough about the guys we have here,” he said. “They have worked hard and not complained. I couldn’t be prouder. We have had to do some things a little different because of the situation so there might be some rough waters ahead but we’ll work through them.”

The defending Sunkist League champion SkyHawks (10-2 in 2016) should not be written off quite yet thought, Among the players they do have back is senior quarterback Troy Temmink, who threw for 2,019 yards and 19 touchdowns with only four interceptions last season.

Also returning is one of his favorite targets in senior wide receiver Kavan Johnson who had 21 receptions for 406 yards and five touchdowns.

Matheny also singled out senior tight end-middle linebacker P.J. Ortiz and senior outside linebacker Antonio Coleman.

Summit will be young with just a handful of seniors so Matheny is looking at the experience his underclassmen will get as a huge benefit in the long run.

“We play a tough preseason so that should get us ready for league play,” he said. “We think we can still make a run at the league title. We just have to see how far we come over these first five games.”

The SkyHawks preseason includes reigning Palomares League champ Ayala and San Andreas power San Gorgonio as well as Etiwanda which is a rival and always in the thick of the Baseline League race.

Summit QB Cade Sparks commits to Indiana State

Embedded image permalink

Summit High School senior Cade Sparks has committed to Indiana State, doing so while on his visit there this weekend.

The 6-foot-4 quarterback was the Inland Valley Player of the Year, helping Summit to a 12-1 season that included and undefeated regular season and berth in the CIF Central Division semifinal.

“I couldn’t be happier,” he said. “I have felt like this was going to be the perfect place for me and after coming to visit, I know this is the right decision.”

Indiana State was Sparks’ lone offer. Much of that was because he transferred from tiny Western Christian after his sophomore year and he played behind and established starter as a junior. So he didn’t get a chance to really show his skills until this season.

UC Davis was also interested but it was a ironic twist that result in Indiana State being the school.

Sycamores Head Coach Mike Sanford has a son, also named Mike, who is an assistant coach at Notre Dame and was visiting Summit to recruit wide receiver Damian Alloway. while there he noticed Sparks.

He said he didn’t need a quarterback but he did know a school that did, his dad’s Indiana State team. And the rest is history.

While there weren’t a lot of other options, Sparks is more than happy with what transpired.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a relief, it’s more of a goal accomplished,” he said. “It was tough at times hearing schools say, maybe if we saw you last year. But everything worked out for the best and I am very happy.”

Summit’s Stephen Carr says he’s still committed to USC

The coaching shuffle at USC isn’t enough to scare away Summit running back Stephen Carr.

Like Rancho Cucamonga’s Thomas Graham, Carr said tonight he’s still committed to the Pac-12 school despite the suspension and eventual dismissal of head coach Steve Sarkisian.

Carr hasn’t had any second thoughts. He spoke with one USC assistant today and got a text message from another.

“They’re going to get a good coach,” Carr said. “They’re going to go out and get the right coach to fit the program.”

Carr is just a junior so he has the opportunity to sit back and see what happens before he has to finalize a decision.

“I’m just going to relax and let everything unfold,” he said.

Carr has helped lead the SkyHawks to a 6-0 record. He has 61 carries for 821 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Etiwanda, Summit to start traveling trophy rivalry game

Etiwanda and Summit High Schools are separated by just 3.53 miles. So it only makes sense that the Eagles and SkyHawks play for more than just bragging rights.

Starting this year they will. All the details are being ironed out but the Sept. 4 game will be called the “Fight for 15,” or some variation thereof. It is in reference to the fact that the two are opposite sides of that particular freeway.

Etiwanda coach Kevin Davis, who came over after two years as offensive coordinator at Colony, graduated from Etiwanda in 1997. He also previously served as assistant there and remembers talk about establishing such a game back then.

So one of the first things he did upon getting the head job was calling Summit counterpart Nick Matheny and asking his opinion on the matter. As expected, Matheny was on board. It didn’t take much to rally support for the idea from the administration at both schools.

Both schools have used A.B. Miller as a home field and Summit still does so the game will be played there.

“I took it to my guys and they really loved the idea,” Davis said. “The schools are so close the kids all know each other. Everyone loves rivalry games so why not do it?”

Last year the teams played to a 6-6 tie, the game cut short prematurely by a power failure early in the fourth quarter.

“After that game it seemed like the perfect time to start it,” Davis said.

“Last year I surprised at just how big that game was,” Matheny said. “It was a great atmosphere. The kids all know each other and the schools are close so it is a game we should keep playing.”

It will be the second game of the season for Etiwanda which opens the season against Norco on Aug. 28. It will be the opener for Summit which plays a scrimmage against Jurupa Valley, also on Aug. 28.
