Damien kicker changes his mind

Damien High School kicking standout Tristan Vizcaino had committed to Washington State as far back as July.

But University of Washington came in with a late offer and the Spartan senior ended up changing his mind after visiting the campus and the Huskies coaching staff over the weekend.

Vizcaino, an all Sierra League and first team All-Inland Valley selection, said he was originally slated to visit Washington the first weekend in December but that was right when then-coach Steve Sarkisian left for the USC job. He waited until the dust cleared before rescheduling that visit.

He got a good vibe from new coach Chris Peterson, who made the move from Boise State, as well as special teams coordinator Jeff Choate, who came in from Florida.

He called the Washington State coaching staff Sunday night, soon after he returned from the Washington visit to let them know of his decision.

“I was set on Washington State but when this came up at the end of my regular season I thought I owed it to myself to at least think about it,” he said. “I felt bad having to tell a school I changed my mind but it’s part of the recruiting game. I had to do what was best for me.”

Chino Hills grabs share of Sierra League volleyball crown

Embedded image permalink

The St. Lucy’s volleyball team has been the juggernaut in the Sierra League the last few years. Well Chino Hills proved it will be a force to reckon with come playoff time too.

The Huskies (17-8, 9-1) were convincing in a 25-21, 25-19, 25-19 win over St. Lucy’s in the regular season finale for both teams Tuesday night. The two tie for the league title, meaning a coin flip will determine the top seed.

St. Lucy’s (16-8, 9-1) won the first time the teams played – in not so dominant fashion 25-23, 25-22, 25-15.

This time it was just the Huskies night. Countless times a Huskies players would stick out a hand to try and keep a ball in play and somehow it found an open spot on the other side of the court. Sometimes you get the bounces, sometimes you don’t.

The Huskies boast one of the top players in Southern California in Meghan Buzzerio, a junior who has already committed to Arizona. They have a gutty little setter in Mallory Beard and a rapidly improving middle blocker in junior Alexa Lister who can be an imposing figure at the net. The rest of the cast isn’t too shabby either.

St. Lucy’s is a formidable foe too. The Regents will regroup and be just fine.

Let the playoffs begin!

Damien celebrates Carew’s selection

Senior Tanner Carew was the man of the hour today at Damien High School.

The Oregon-bound football standout was named to the prestigious U.S. Army All American Bowl to be played in January in San Antonio, Tex. Just 90 players nationwide were selected. Representatives from the game and the Armed Services were on hand to formally present Carew with his jersey in a noon gathering in the Senior Quad.

It’s an honor because of the caliber of player chosen for the event. There are lots of senior All-Star games, locally and throughout the country. But this one puts added emphasis on character and leadership – attributes the armed services embrace.

Carew saw the game on television for the first time when he was in the fourth grade and told dad Marty it was one he would like to participate. Well that goal has come to fruition. He’ll be a great representative of Damien High School, the Inland Valley and Southen California.

Chino Hills High School senior setter Mallory Beard has been named California High School Player of the Week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association for her play the week of Sept. 28-Oct. 2.

The Huskies had just one match last week, beating South Hills 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 27-25) in Sierra League play. But in that three-set match Beard registered 47 assists and enabled her team to hit .484 as a team.

Chino Hills (10-7) plays local rival Ayala tonight.

Chino Hills to stick with 2 quarterbacks

Chino Hills football coach Matt Bechtel is taking a page for Lane Kiffin’s book although he has to hope his has a happier ending.

Bechtel is going with two quarterbacks – sophomore Zac Sturdivent and junior Daniel Martinez. In this case it’s not that neither is doing the job, it’s that both ARE getting it done.

If he has to go into Sierra League play still undecided on one, so be it.

“They’re both doing a good job of managing the game and moving the chains and that’s what we ask them to do,” he said. “I’d be doing the a disservice if I decided on one.”

“We’ll just have two game plans, one for each guy. It’s just more work for me but that’s OK.”

The Huskies are 1-1. They’re coming off a 47-42 loss to highly-regarded Bishop Amat.

It won’t get any easier this week as the Huskies will be taking on Tesoro (2-0) on Thursday, the shorter week making for another challenge.

Chino Hills games still on

The football games between Chino Hills and Riverside Arlington will go on as scheduled, despite the tragic death of an Arlington player earlier this week.

Huskies coach Matt Bechtel said he was concerned about the situation as well but was notified that school wanted to proceed.

The varsity game is slated for 7 p.m. on Friday at Ramona High School.
