Diamond Bar 7, Montebello 6 — Andrea Gonzalez was the winning pitcher and Brenna Harold and Becky Winder both had a double and two RBIs for the Brahmas (6-5-2, 1-0) in a Diamond Bar Springfest opener.

Ibis Aguilar expected to be named Bonita football coach

Ibis Aguilar is expected to be the new varsity football coach at Bonita High School, pending school board approval.Aguilar, who last season was an assistant at Bonita and prior to that was head coach at South El Monte for four seasons, replaces Adrian Medrano, who left Bonita for El Rancho earlier this offseason.
Aguilar and Medrano were college teammates at University of La Verne. Aguilar led South El Monte to a share of the Mission Valley League championship in 2012 and had a 19-24 record in his four seasons.Bonita was one of several area jobs still open this far into the offseason. Baldwin Park, Diamond Ranch, El Monte, Gladstone and Wilson are among the local schools still looking to fill a head coach vacancy.

Boras Classic: Damien and South Hills both lose, Spartans have 2-run homer erased, Huskies lose on walkoff

Damien lost in bizarre fashion in the first round of the Boras Classic. Damien’s two-run homer in the seventh inning was nullified when the lead runner didn’t tag home. That allowed Mira Costa to escape with a 1-0 victory. South Hils played El Camino Real tough, but lost 2-1 on a walk-off hit in the seventh.

Mira Costa 1, Damien 0 — Damien (3-5) lost in bizarre fashion in the first round of the Boras Classic. Isaiah Paige hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning, but it was nullified when the lead runner didn’t touch home.
Glendora 10, St. Francis 5 — Bryce Wooldridge went 4 for 4 with an RBI, Chase Kerr went 2 for 3 with three RBIs, Jake Bryant went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs and Jake Bikle had a double for the Tartans (9-6) in an Anaheim Lions Tournament victory.
Diamond Ranch 4, Katella 1 — Jorge Rauda threw seven innings for the Panthers (7-6, 1-2) in a Anaheim Lions Tournament game.

Softball Rankings: Bishop Amat takes over top spot after impressive start

Area Softball Rankings
1. Bishop Amat (13-1) — No. 1 in Division 3 and looking the part with a 3-0 start in the Del Rey League.
2. Glendora (11-1) — Despite shocking 4-1 loss to Diamond Bar, they’ve played above expectations.
3. St. Lucy’s (6-3-2) — Dakota Casper has been solid in the circle for the Regents, undefeated against area teams
4. Edgewood (7-1) — Another great start includes 4-3 win over Charter Oak, but 20-2 loss to Glendora
5. Diamond Ranch (9-3) — Win over Los Altos and sweep over San Dimas. Hacienda league favorites?
6. South Hills (7-7) — Even with Natalie Lugo’s 1.48 ERA and 102 strikeouts, Huskies don’t score enough to win consistently.
7. Charter Oak (6-4) — Could be better and probably will get better when Hacienda begins
8. Diamond Bar (5-5-2) — Despite record, it does own the lone win over Glendora
9. Wilson (5-2) — The Valle Vista is up for grabs and the Wildcats have as good a chance as any.
10. Arroyo (7-3) — Solid starts includes wins over Monrovia and Temple City.

Baseball Rankings: South Hills regains top spot after a pair of grand slams

Tribune Top Ten Baseball Rankings
1. South Hills (8-2) — Karlos Morales and Quinn Cotter both belted grand slams in separate wins last week, Morales’ blast came in a 5-2 win over Bonita.
2. Bonita (10-1) — The San Gabriel Valley tourney champs had been perfect until a 5-2 loss to South Hills.
3. Sierra Vista (8-1) — Impressive non-league wins over Monrovia and Alhambra and 3-0 in the Montview.
4. Walnut (6-2-1) — Even with loss of pitcher Cody Dye for the season, Mustangs still 3-0 in Hacienda and looking the part.
5. Glendora (8-5) — Rough 1-2 start in the Palomares mirrors the slow start the Tartans had last year before bouncing back.
6. Damien (3-4) — Spartans have played a tough schedule, but record still should be better.
7. Bishop Amat (4-7) — As bad as it looks overall, Lancers still 2-0 in the Del Rey League.
8. Covina (5-3) — Perfect 3-0 in the Valle Vista which includes a 3-0 win over Wilson
9. Wilson (5-1) — Wildcats with a big 6-4 win over Northview which followed a 3-0 loss to Covina
10. Northview (7-3-1) — Had looked impressive until a 6-4 loss to Wilson, but probably still Valle Vista league favorites.
