La Mirada’s dream season came crashing down Friday, losing to Salesian, which wasn’t your average at-large entrant. The Mats weren’t the only area teams to see their season’s end. El Rancho, after winning its first league title since the late 1990s, lost to Burbank; California to Downey, La Habra to Capistrano Valley and Cantwell Sacred Heart to Arrowhead Christian. But look who is still standing? La Serna, which beat Dominguez, and Montbello, which held off La Puente.
GAMES OF THE WEEK
LA SERNA 24, DOMINGUEZ 21

WHITTIER >> La Serna, the defending CIF Southeast Division champion, held off a hard-nosed Dominguez team to win 24-21 and earn a spot in next week’s quarterfinals.
Lancers’ junior safety Jonathan Ceballos intercepted Ronald Smith’s pass in the end zone with 24 seconds remaining in the game to preserve the win for La Serna.
“Dominguez battled in the second half,” said La Serna head coach Margarito Beltran. “But we made the play when it counted. At this point it doesn’t matter how you get the victory. A victory is a victory and we are just happy to advance.”
The Dominguez rushing game was effective, gaining 291 yards on 46 carries.
However, on the final drive, needing to go 75 yards for the game-winning touchdown, the lack of a passing game affected the Dons’ ability manage the clock. Dominguez (7-4) only attempted five passes in the game.

SALESIAN 24, LA MIRADA 18
LA MIRADA >> For the second year in a row, La Mirada High School made a quick exit from the CIF-Southern Section playoffs.
This season, however, the loss was much more was unexpected as the Matadores, the Suburban League champion, fell to Salesian, an at-large team from the Angelus League, 24-18, in a Southeast Division first-round game Friday night at La Mirada.
La Mirada finishes the season with a 9-2 record, while Salesian (5-6) will play Burbank in a second-round game.
La Mirada senior quarterback Christian Lara (14 for 20, 140 yards), who threw for 28 touchdowns this season, was shut out of the end zone as junior running back Sei-J Lauago ran for a game-high 97 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries.
Matadores senior wide receiver Tony Brown had a game-high six receptions for 46 yards.

Christmas came a bit early for several area athletes, who all signed their scholarship letters to their respective colleges on Wednesday.
National letter of intent day was a banner crop for locals, led by Damien High School boys basketball player Jeremy Hemsley, who signed with San Diego State. The list also features several of the area’s top baseball players, including San Dimas’ Peter Lambert (UCLA), South Hills’ Gavin Velasquez (Cal State Fullerton), Glendora’s Nick Kaye (Cal State Fullerton), Damien’s Jonathan Olsen (UCLA) and Isaiah Carranza (Oregon), Bonita’s Danny Gelalich (Brigham Young), Nogales’ Anthony Guardado (Long Beach State) and La Mirada’s Ethan Lopez (Hawaii).
Softball players signing include La Habra’s Amanda Akles (Eastern Michigan), Los Altos’ Celeste Wood (MIchigan State) and Berlynne Delamora (North Carolina), Bonita’s Chloe Melanson (Miami-Ohio) and South Hills’ Caitlyn Van Hemelryck (Southeastern Louisiana).
Hemsley has been the Tribune Player of the Year each of the past two seasons. He will join a San Diego State program that many feel might be the best program on the West Coast after advancing to the NCAA Tournament each of the past five seasons, including two trips to the Sweet 16.

The senior has averaged 19 and 22 points per game, respectively, the past two seaosns, including leading Damien to CIF-Southern Section 3AA title in 2012-13.
Lambert and Velasquez were two of the area’s top pitchers last season and will continue their careers at two of the top programs in the country.
Lambert, who was 11-2 with a 0.59 ERA in leading San Dimas to the Valle Vista League title, joins a UCLA program that has had its best success in recent years, including winning the College World Series in 2013.
“My decision was pretty easy,” Lambert said. “It goes back to last season. They were one of my only offers and UCLA has always been a dream school for me.”
Velasquez, who was 10-1 with a 0.67 ERA to help South Hills to the Sierra League crown, is the latest area star to join Cal State Fullerton, which past standouts have included Justin Garza (Bonita), Wes Roemer (Glendora), Tyler and Brett Pill (Covina) and Sergio and Richy Pedroza (Northview).
“It’s a great baseball program and has my major that I want to major in,” Velasquez said. “Their coaching staff is great. They have great history, the College World Series .. just a great program overall.”
Lopez, an infielder who hit .333 with 19 RBIs for La Mirada, arrived at Hawaii after earlier de-committing from USC.
“I didn’t feel (USC) would be the right fit for me,” said. “I restarted the recruiting process. Hawaii came around and when I went out there, it felt like home.”
Wood was one the area’s top softball players after hitting .547 to go along with a 12-2 record in the circle. She has no qualms playing at Michigan State and away from home.
“I’m ready for the experience,” Wood said. “I’m ready to grow my own independence and be on my own.
“(Michigan State) is a beautiful camps and the coaches are very nice. I watched a couple of the practices and I just fell in love with what they do.”

LA HABRA >> A three-game first-round sweep by the La Habra High School girls volleyball team over visiting Oak Hills of Hesperia propelled the Highlanders to the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 2A playoffs Tuesday night.
La Habra will play Palm Springs on Thursday.
La Habra coach Adrianne Spear calls it the dreaded second-round curse.
Leading the way for La Habra was a pair of seniors, Alexis Kolschefski and Ryana Murch. Middle blocker Kolschefski, who has been on varsity for all four years, had a match-high 13 kills and eight blocks, while outside hitter/middle blocker Murch had eight kills.
Sophomore libero Mariah Venegas, who was all over the court saving hard kill-attempts by Oak Hills (15-12), had 22 digs and senior setter Ashly Hernandez had a game-high 22 assists.
La Habra coach Adrianne Spear: “This year’s team has a lot of composure and it’s been a building process to get to a point to be where we can be composed.”
