ST. JOHN BOSCO ROUTS LA MIRADA, 76-8: There were about 10 nervous minutes for St. John Bosco against La Mirada on Friday night, but 76 unanswered points can have a pretty powerful calming effect.
The Braves fell behind the host Matadores after a beautiful opening drive, capped by a Sei-J Lauago touchdown run, but the Braves responded with a flurry, cruising to an emphatic 76-8 nonleague victory.
“We knew they were going to come out with a flurry,” said Bosco head coach Jason Negro. “We didn’t do a good job handling it as a team. They did some things we weren’t prepared for and they put us back on our heels and took it to us for that first drive and a half.”
Once Negro and his staff adjusted to the different formations, motion and tempo from the La Mirada offense, the Braves took control of the game and let new quarterback Quentin Davis shine.
The senior is replacing three-year starter and current UCLA Bruin Josh Rosen, and he looked like he’ll be just fine in that role.In the first half alone, Davis was 13 for 14 for 263 yards and five passing touchdowns, adding 56 rushing yards with another score on the ground. He threw a 26-yard touchdown in the second half to finish with a whopping seven scores to go along with 389 total yards.

MONTEBELLO OPENS WITH BIG WIN OVER EL MONTE: There was just no stopping Montebello High School football team all-purpose threat Isaac Mendibles on Friday night.
The senior returned two kickoffs for touchdowns and had rushing and receiving scores to lead visiting Montebello to a 44-30 win over El Monte.
“He had a touchdown in pretty much every aspect,” Montebello head coach Pete Gonzalez said. “He’s a great player and a great kid. We’re hoping we’re going to be a little more balanced, where people can’t just key on Isaac.
“Obviously, he’s a big factor in our game. We’re going to go with him first. He’s our guy. You’re going to have to stop him.”
Montebello, which didn’t win a nonleague game last season before winning the Almont League, moved to 1-0. El Monte is 0-1.

ROUNDUP
LA HABRA WINS IN ROUT:
Eric Barriere passed for four touchdowns to lead La Habra High School to a 41-7 victory over El Toro in the season opener for both teams on Friday night.
The senior got to the host Chargers defense quickly, completing 9 of 15 passes for 197 yards. He threw a 90-yard TD pass to Lancaster Garcia, a 41-yarder to Justin Sun and 8 and 5-yard scores to Amon Sellows.
The Chargers picked off a Barriere pass and returned it for the nonleague game’s first score.Eli Anderson also scored on a 40-yard interception return and Prince Ross scored on a 20-yard run.

WHITTIER >> La Serna High School fired head football coach Margarito Beltran on Thursday and placed the special education teacher on paid administrative leave following allegations involving physical restraint of a special needs student outside a classroom, district officials said.
Whittier police are investigating the incident, which occurred Aug. 21 at the campus located at 15301 Youngwood Dr. in Whittier.
Police spokesman Officer John Scoggins declined to name the suspect because of the ongoing investigation. He said the case is now with the District Attorney’s Office and detectives will meet with the prosecutor next week.
No charges have been filed.
Beltran, who was preparing his team for Friday’s season opener against Eastlake High in Chula Vista, didn’t return several calls for comment.
“Following allegations of an incident involving physical restraint of a special needs student, a La Serna High School teacher, who is also a member of the school’s athletics staff, was placed on paid administrative leave last week pending the outcome of an investigation,” Rich Russell, assistant superintendent of personnel for the Whittier Union High School District, said in a press release. “However, after violating the terms of his paid leave, the employee has been removed from his coaching position and remains on paid administrative leave from his teaching position.”
The release didn’t say what Beltran did to violate the conditions of his leave.
