WHITTIER DAILY NEWS FOOTBALL RANKINGS
1. La Habra (5-1) — The Highlanders showed they are still the one in the city of La Habra. Now they can take a step towards a ninth consecutive Freeway League crown when Buena Park comes calling on Friday. You can take another win to the bank.
2. La Mirada (4-3) — The Matadores are back in their comfort zone and playing like it. They’ve outscored their first three Suburban League opponents, 180-7. The question is can they play themselves into a top 4 seed for the Southeast playoffs?
3. La Serna (4-2) — The Lancers are the runaway pick for the Del Rio League and they lived up to the billing with a 42-0 whitewash of Whittier. Can they be touched in league? El Rancho gets a shot on Thursday.
4. Montebello (4-1) — The Oilers made easy work of rival Schurr, 43-10, last week. They should cruise the next few weeks before a showdown against Bell Gardens.
5. Sonora (5-1) — The Raiders were no match for La Habra, which shutdown its vaunting run game. This still looks like a playoff team, but it still has to take care of business, beginning this week vs. Sunny Hills.
6. California (2-4) — The Condors are a lot better than their record shows, and it was on display with a 27-0 win over previously undefeated Pioneer last week. Cal looks like the chief challenger to La Serna, which it gets in two weeks.
7. St. Paul (3-3) — The Angelus League is just one week old, but already the Swordsmen have a must-win game. They get La Salle, who they beat last season. The big boys still lie ahead, so any thought of the playoffs must include a win on Friday.
8. Pioneer (5-1) — The Titans took a dose of reality with a 27-0 loss to California. But Pioneer is still enjoying its best season in nearly 15 years. Question is can they add to it make a run at the playoffs? They have a big one vs. Whittier on Thursday. The winner can still entertain playoff thoughts.
9. Santa Fe (2-4) — This was a tough team to read based on their schedule, but they showed they can compete in the league with a 34-15 victory over El Rancho. A good barometer test comes Friday vs. Cal.
10. Whittier (3-3) — The Cardinals took a step back with a 42-0 loss to La Serna. They are now in a must-win situation when they face Pioneer on Thursday.
OTHERS: 11. Whittier Christian (3-4), 12. El Rancho (0-6), Schurr (1-5), Cantwell-Sacred Heart (1-5).
