*Shocker! Messi & Friends LA Coliseum game canceled

Given the hype, this was a game that never looked like happening from the outset.

There was virtually non-existent promotion, evasiveness from the promoters (according to a media colleague of mine who never could quite chat with them) and just generally weird reports (players were being flown in hours before the game)?

Whatever.

It’s done.

And it’s all Messi’s fault, according to the promoters:

“In all the years I’ve been doing live events, I have never encountered a situation like this,” said Ralina Shaw, vice president of public relations for El Padrino Spirits. “It’s unfortunate because the only losers in this scenario are the fans that were looking forward to the game and the City of Los Angeles.”

And:

Said El Padrino Spirits CEO Todd Graham: “After hours of trying to convince Lionel Messi’s management team to fulfill their contractual agreement and come to Los Angeles, it is clear they have no respect for these fans and this market. We feel that this is a blatant attempt to defraud American citizens and businesses that sponsored this event.”

The most amazing thing: 45,000 suckers reportedly bought tickets to this game.

*Updated:

The game sponsors released a statement on Independence Day that read in part:

After hours of negotiation all parties involved in the Los Angeles, Battle of the Stars match are currently discussing potential dates on which to reschedule said match. Lionel Messi has expressed his deep regret at the cancellation as well as his repeated desire to reschedule the match for the sake of the fans, who are of the utmost importance to him.

Stay tuned.

U.S. veteran international Carlos Bocanegra signs with Chivas USA

Reclamation project? Carlos Bocanegra, used to playing in red and white stripes, has joined Chivas USA (AP file photo).

Carlos Bocanegra has fallen out of favor with the U.S. national team, was reduced to playing Spanish second division soccer last season and struggled with a hamstring injury that limited his appearances as he nears the end of his career, but that didn’t stop outmanned Chivas USA from picking up the UCLA product today in a trade with Toronto FC.

Bocanegra, 34,  had officially left Glasgow Rangers on Saturday, according to reports.

The Canadian club received a first round draft pick in 2015 and an international slot in exchange for Chivas USA moving up the MLS allocation order to sign the Upland native and former U.S. captain.

“This is great news for Chivas USA, as Carlos Bocanegra is a very experienced player with great image and with a strong desire to be in California after his time in European soccer”, said Chivas USA Sporting President Dennis te Kloese. “I think his experience is going to be very valuable for us, as he knows MLS well from when he played for Chicago Fire, and has a long track record with the U.S. Men’s National Team.

Bocanegra played 116 times for the U.S. and for the likes of Fulham and  Glasgow Rangers in Europe, although injury has restricted recent appearances for Racing Santander.

“I’m very excited to join the club,” said Bocanegra.  “I know it’s going to be a big challenge because the club hasn’t been getting the greatest results on the field but it’s something I’m looking forward to. The club has made me feel very welcomed and did a big effort to have me sign with the club so that I’ll be able to help try to turn the team around into being on the positive foot.

“It feels really good to be coming back home,” he added. “I’ve been following MLS a lot more closely this year, and I got my start here in the League, so I’m excited to seeing personally how much the League has grown. I’ve noticed how it’s grown so much by following it on TV and the internet, but actually being out there on the field and being able to compete make me excited to see how the level has gotten better and how it’s grown.”

Bocangra will join the club in Philadelphia and is eligible to play in the July 12 game there against the Union.

I’ll have more from Bocanegra in Tuesday’s column.

Incidentally, Soccer By Ives Tweeted today that Chivas USA is close to signing Erik Torres, a name that has come up seveal times in recent weeks, and Mexican forward David Izazola.

Chivas USA dump four players including Laurent Courtois

chivasusaIn an apparent money-saving move, Chivas USA dumped four players Sunday night including French midfielder Laurent Courtois, the day after he provided the equalizer against New England to stop a club record seven-game losing streak.

Also cut by new coach Jose Luis Real, who clearly has not liked what he’s seen so far in his trio of games in charge so far, were 23-year-old Ecuadorian Miller Bolanos, widely considered  among the club’s top players, defender Joaquin Velazquez and 19-year-old midfielder Giovani Casillas, who was sent back to CD Guadalajara.

Waiving players with semi-guaranteed contracts before July 1 frees up salary cap space.

Courtois was scheduled to make $132,000, Velazquez $100,000, Casillas $93,000 and  Bolanos $54,000 this year

But Courtois and Bolanos, whose options were declined, appeared in just five games this season, while Casillas made just two starts. Velazquez started in all 12 Chivas USA MLS games this season on the 3-10-3 squad.
