LA Galaxy’s Omar Gonzalez joins Team Fruity, USWNT’s Alex Morgan hooks up with Team Cocoa

fruityomarAnd, no, it’s not a new MLS franchise.

The cereal promotion begins this month when boxes featuring Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez and Diamond Bar’s Alex Morgan go on sale at um, your favorite Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles outlet.

Here’s more, from the press release:

Since January, Pebbles fans of all ages have been asked to choose their allegiance to Team Fruity or Team Cocoa. Online, fans can share their support for their favorite Pebbles flavor by visiting www.TeamPebbles.com and downloading an interactive app encouraging fans to vote, take photos, and play minigames. By completing simple online challenges and sharing them through Instagram using their team’s hashtag (#TeamFruity or #TeamCocoa), fans become eligible to win prizes such as gift cards, iPads, or Alex Morgan and Omar Gonzalez signed merchandise.

Fun fact, for what it’s worth, from the press release: Omar’s Fruity Pebbles boxes will feature limited edition Kickin’ KaBluey Green flakes.

“Joining Team Fruity is a dream come true for a flavor-seeking fanatic like me,” Gonzalez is quoted as saying, apparently with a straight face. “I’m prepared to go head-to-head with Alex and Team Cocoa with the hope of helping Team Fruity take the lead as the most well-liked Pebbles flavor – even if it means going into extra time!”

Or, there’s a $50 option.

*Chivas USA loaned midfielder Gabriel Farfan to Liga MX side Chiapas FC on a six-month loan that includes an option to buy, the club announced today. He started 10 games last year for the Goats after joining the club from Philadelphia in May.

Tuesday Kicks: Former LA Galaxy coach Sigi Schmid on Sounders hot seat and more

There’s no column today since I took advantage of the long weekend to take a few days off, but here are few links to get us caught up:

  • It’s fair to say longtime South Bay resident Sigi Schmid could well be sleepless in Seattle for a few nights at least until his job prospects with the Sounders and their demanding fan base are resolved one way or another.
  • The injured Landon Donovan wasn’t called up for the pair of upcoming U.S. games, but the Galaxy’s Omar Gonzalez got the call, while Robbie Keane will feature for Ireland despite a longstanding Achilles issue and A.J. DeLaGarza is likely to make his Guam debut despite making two previous appearances for the U.S. in exhibition games.
  • The Galaxy have already made their first signing of the off-season.
  • Meanwhile, Mexico hosts New Zealand at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday on ESPN with both nations fighting for a final World Cup spot in Brazil next year.
  • The U.S. Women’s National Team completed its 2013 campaign Sunday.

  • The U.S. Women’s Team is back in action tonight with Hermosa Beach resident Abby Wambach closing in on a famous Mia Hamm mark.

  • Both starting American goalkeepers for the men’s and women’s national teams have gone down with injuries within 24 hours of each other. Hope Solo will be sidelined up to four months following surgery to repair torn cartilage in her left wrist, U.S. Soccer said Thursday, while today Everton’s Tim Howard went down with a back injury that’s expected to rule him out of the World Cup qualifiers later this month against Costa Rica and Mexico. Former Chivas USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan is Howard’s usual backup.
  • ESPN kicks off its English-language coverage of Liga MX at 5:25 p.m. today on ESPNews when Morelia plays Club America. Also, Cruz Azul faces Jaguares at 2:55 p.m. Saturday on ESPNews, while Puebla and Pumas clash at the same time on the same channel Sunday.
  • MLS embarks on its second slate of weekend games, although the Galaxy, between midweek CONCACAF Champions League games, are among three teams with the weekend off. Chivas USA is at home at 2 p.m. Sunday against FC Dallas (live on UniMas).
  • Finally, the Manchester United-Real Madrid UEFA Champions League game earlier this week was the third most watched game ever on Los Angeles-based Fox Soccer. An estimated 520,000 viewers watched the Red Devils get dumped out of the competition in controversial circumstances. The most watched games on Fox Soccer are the 2011 Gold Cup final between the U.S. and Mexico (1.1 million) and the Chelsea-Liverpool clash in 2011 (579,000).
