NWSL: Mallory Pugh goes from UCLA to Washington Spirit

U.S. women’s national team forward Mallory Pugh’s UCLA career ended before it officially started.

Wednesday,  Pugh, 19, was officially introduced as a member of the Washington Spirit. She enrolled at UCLA last winter; participated in the spring games and was set to begin her freshman season next fall. Pugh made her international debut last January.

Southern California college players eligible for NWSL Draft

The National Women’s Soccer League released a preliminary list of players eligible for selection in next week’s draft.

The draft will take place Jan. 12 at the National Soccer Coaches Association of America convention in Los Angeles at noon. There will be four rounds.

Of the 148 names, 14 had Southern California ties:

U.S. U-23 Women’s National team opens camp Friday

With the senior team opening camp later this month, the U-23 U.S. Women’s National team will get underway Friday at StubHub Center.

The roster is a mixture of top players from the U.S. Youth National Teams, elite college players and four NWSL players.ussoccerlogo

The camp runs from Friday to Jan. 13.

Among the invitees is Ashley Sanchez (Monrovia). Sanchez played in both the U-17 and U-20 World Cups last year.

U.S. Women’s National Team camp opens this month

Even without a new collective bargaining agreement, the U.S. Women’s National Soccer team will open winter camp, Jan. 13 at StubHub Center.

In the release, the U.S. Soccer stated: The U.S. Women’s National Team and U.S. Soccer will continue to operate under the Collective Bargaining Agreement in its current form as negotiations continue into the new year.

The camp will run from Jan. 13-23.

Former Santa Margarita HS star Amy Rodriguez is one of the 29 players being called in. Rodriguez took last year off for the birth of her second child.

Alex Morgan, who recently signed with Olympique Lyon, will only be available from Jan. 16-24 during the official FIFA international window.

As of now, there aren’t any friendlies scheduled. However, the U.S. will compete in the SheBelieves Cup

2017 soccer calendar kicks off with busy Southern California January

2017 has arrived and we’re just a couple of months away from another Major League Soccer season.

The month of January will be extremely busy around Southern California with various soccer events. Here is a look:

Jan. 8-12 – MLS Player Combine; StubHub Center

Jan. 10 – U.S. men’s national team opens – StubHub Center

Jan. 12 – NWSL Draft – NSCAA Convention in Los Angeles

Jan. 13 – MLS SuperDraft –  NSCAA Convention in Los Angeles

NWSL: UCLA women’s soccer will be well-represented in final

The NWSL final is set for Sunday between the Western New York Flash and the Washington Spirit (2 p.m.; Fox Sports 1) and the UCLA women’s soccer program will be heavily represented.

There will be seven former UCLA players in the match.

Five of the seven are with Western New York. Defender Abby Dahlkemper, midfielder Sam Mewis and goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland (all three played at UCLA from 2011-14), forward Taylor Smith  (2012-15) and midfielder McCall Zerboni (2005-08).

Defenders Caprice Dydasco and Megan Oyster, who also played at UCLA from 2011-14 are on the Washington Spirit.

Six of the seven were on UCLA’s 2013 NCAA championship team. Zerboni played in the NCAA College Cup in each of her four years at UCLA.
