Poll: Galaxy should target Angel

Red Bulls’ Juan Pablo Angel (right): melts in your mouth, not in your hand.

At least 100 Percent Soccer readers responding to this poll think Angel should be on Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena’s things to do in the off-season.

I posted it late Friday – not exactly a high traffic time, but the sentiment of Galaxy fans is pretty clear. Feel free to add your vote – and views.

What’s not to like about a healthy, proven top-flight veteran who has adapted to not only MLS, but the language, culture and lifestyle? A rare combination.

New York media are already facing up to Angel’s pending departure with trepidation.

Bruce?

Galaxy return to Oz

To play Newcastle United Jets FC of the Hyundai A-League in an international friendly Nov. 27 in a game that will be broadcast in Southern California, with details to be announced later.

“We are very excited to be returning to Australia, the site of one of our most memorable postseason matches, to play a friendly against Newcastle United Jets FC,” Galaxy President of Business Operations Tom Payne said. “Newcastle are a club with a long tradition of success in the Hyundai A-League and are making great strides at strengthening their ties to the local community. We believe that this match will help the Jets further those ties while also providing all of their fans in the Hunter Region with memories that will last a lifetime.”

The club won the A-League in 2008 and currently lies 10th in the table with a 1-3-5 record. The club is captained by former England international forward Michael Bridges.

From the Galaxy press release:

This will be the Galaxy’s third trip to Oceania in the last four years, having played once in Australia and twice in New Zealand. In November 2007, the club lost 5-3 to Sydney FC in front 80,295 fans at Telstra Stadium in Sydney, Australia. A few days later, the Galaxy defeated Hyundai A-League side Wellington Phoenix 4-1 at Westpac Stadium in front of a then-record crowd of 31,853, which was the biggest ever to see a soccer game in New Zealand. In 2008, the Galaxy returned to New Zealand, travelling this time to Auckland, where they defeated a team of Oceania All-Stars 3-0 at Mt. Smart Stadium.

Toluca’s De La Torre new El Tri coach

i-122d3376efd03992ff4161319f838c2c-delatorre.jpg New coach: new attitude? (AP Photo).

Can he handle whining prima donna’s who like to party? What are the odds this guy will actually be around for the next World Cup?:

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Jose Manuel De La Torre has been hired as the new coach of Mexico’s national soccer team, less than five years after making his coaching debut.

De La Torre’s post was confirmed at a meeting of Mexican club owners Monday. His nomination was almost a formality after the only other contender, Victor Manuel Vucetich, dropped out of the race Saturday for personal reasons.

The 44-year-old, who will leave his job at Mexican club Toluca, began his coaching career in 2006 and has won three Mexican league titles.

“This is a dream I’ve had since I was a child,” he said.

De La Torre takes over from Javier Aguirre, who left after Mexico was eliminated in the second round of the World Cup. Two temporary coaches have overseen Mexico since then.

“It’s a dream to represent your country,” De La Torre said. “As I developed as a coach I kept feeding the same dream every day.”

De La Torre acknowledged his primary objective as Mexico coach will be to make sure the team qualifies for the 2014 World Cup, but he takes over amid a crisis in Mexican soccer.

Last month, 11 players were handed fines and two others — Carlos Vela of Arsenal and Efrain Juarez of Celtic — were given six-month suspensions for holding an all-night party after an international friendly against Colombia.

The 11 fined players, upset at the punishments and angry the outing had been made public, threatened to boycott future matches unless national team director Nestor De La Torre — Jose Manuel’s brother — left his job.

The players turned up for the subsequent match against Venezuela in October, but Nestor De La Torre resigned hours before the game, which ended 2-2.

Mexico has won just one of its past four matches.

Tuesday’s column: Los Alamitos’ Jonathan Bornstein bids farewell to MLS

i-ece9520e3248adda60fa19528ac6cd29-jonnybgeoff.jpgJonny Bornstein, seen here playing against Houston’s Geoff Cameron earlier this season, said Monday his toughest opponent in MLS was the Dynamo (and individually it was Brian Mullan, incidentally). (AP photo).

Jonathan Bornstein has always been among the most approachable players in the league.

Modest, personable and honest, Bornstein always greets reporters with an easy grin whether Chivas USA has won or lost.

Bornstein has been a reliable contributor to MLS during his five years in the league and blossomed into an international class defender.

As he approaches the last two games of his career before moving to Mexico, I chatted with an accommodating Bornstein under gloomy South Bay skies Monday for today’s column, which also looks ahead (briefly) to Sunday’s final MLS and Galaxy game of the season at Home Depot Center, where the regular season title will be on the line (again).

I for one will miss his classy presence both on and off the Home Depot Center pitch.

Updated

Also, now that David Beckham is back with the Galaxy it looks like the global game of cashing in on their marketable commodity has returned, too, with another trip to Australia possible.

Monday Kicks: Beach soccer, Cuban defector & more

*U.S. Beach Soccer Men’s National Team head coach Eddie Soto has named 18 players to a camp ahead of the CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship Nov. 10-13 in Huntington Beach.

Locals include goalkeeper Mike McAndrews (UC Santa Barbara; Long Beach), defender Joe Cartlidge (So Cal Beach FC; Redondo Beach); forwards Skyler Thuresson (PSA Elite; Long Beach) and Raphael Xexeo (BS Club; Brasil; Lawndale). Former Galaxy player Zak Ibsen is also on the squad.

The camp will be used to select a squad of 12 for FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup qualifying Dec. 1-5 in Puerto Vallarta.

*Cuban defector Yeniel Bermudez, who apparently tried out with the Galaxy and Chivas USA, is not looking forward to a long Alaska winter.

*Los Angeles-based Fox Soccer Channel has revamped its prime time lineup as of today that includes a three-hour EPL block beginning at 4 p.m.

Incidentally, that means Kyle Martino’s “Soccer Talk Live,” the show with the cable access production values and cardboard set, (Freddie Ljungberg was interviewed via Skype tonight) now airs at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. Mondays. What is with all the video game ads with this show?

Final: Colorado Rapids at Galaxy

Galaxy 1 Rapids 3

I was under the weather and was forced to skip watching the game tonight (in person), but the performance can be summed up in three words: “Not good enough.”

Game story.

Sounds like Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena was in full sarcasm mode when asked about the difference in the game:

“Oh, they scored three goals. When they find another way to decide who wins and loses games, that’s important. Until they change the rules I think it’s the team with the most goals wins. And that was the case tonight.”

Thanks for sharing, Bruce.

Galaxy lineup: Donovan Ricketts; Sean Franklin, Gregg Berhalter (Alex Cazumba 73′), Omar Gonzalez, A.J. DeLaGarza; Juninho, Chris Birchall (Eddie Lewis 42′), David Beckham, Michael Stephens (Mike Magee 76′); Landon Donovan, Edson Buddle.

Saturday Galaxy gameday & Friday’s college scores

The Galaxy’s season reaches its zenith tonight with a potential Supporters’ Shield-clinching game against the Colorado Rapids at 7:30 p.m. at Home Depot Center that’s close to a sellout.

Win and they’re in – but Colorado, too, are one of the few MLS teams whose playoff aspirations are unclear; they still need to clinch a playoff spot, but could do so before a ball is even kicked today depending on what happens earlier in the day to the Kansas City Wizards, teetering on the precipice of playoff elimination.

Tweeted Lawndale’s Kei Kamara, the Wizards striker:

2day is a must win game, and am gonna need @EdsonBuddle and @landondonovan to do work at the HDC tonite…oh & Rickets, Shavar say do WORK!!

Big question for the Galaxy tonight: Will veteran central defender Gregg Berhalter return after a viral issue, neck strain and gawd knows what injury that is threatening his career?

David Beckham has played a bit part in the Galaxy’s fine season so far, but could play a crucial role tonight. Read why here.

Missed our build-up to the big game?

*Check out our Galaxy notebook here.

*Predict the result of today’s game and win a copy of “The Beckham Experiment”.

*Should the Galaxy sign Juan Pablo Angel for next season? Take the poll here.

If you’re going to the game tonight, not only should you bundle up, but keep in mind:

*The Galaxy is holding a clothing drive and collection booths will be located outside each of the Home Depot Center’s entrances. Donations will be given to the Union Rescue Mission.

All fans who donate receive a “Galaxy Drive Series Voucher” valid for $5 off a ticket for select games and will be entered into a drawing for an adidas Galaxy-signed soccer ball.

*Gates open at 6 p.m. and the first 10,000 fans through them receive a Galaxy cinch sack.

*Pregame festivities include a performance by Radio Disney artist Josh Golden at Soccerfest.

*As part of a league-wide campaign to help fight breast cancer, Saturday’s match features pink Gatorade sideline towels on team benches, pink MLS W.O.R.K.S. ribbon patches on all Galaxy player uniforms, pink scarves for Galaxy coaching staff, and pink adidas match soccer balls, which will also be available for purchase at the Team LA Store and kiosks.

In local college games Friday:

*The first-ever goal by a goalkeeper for the men’s program at Westchester’s Loyola Marymount College kept alive their dream start to the West Coast Conference season as 6-foot-6 sophomore Max Young (South Torrance High) scored with 1:10 remaining and the 10-man Lions earned a 1-1 draw at Santa Clara.

The goal marked an improbable comeback for LMU.

Trailing 1-0, and down a player who was ejected in the 88th minute, Young, making his first appearance of the season, headed home a ricocheted loose ball as the 24th-ranked Lions (9-3-2, 5-0-1 WCC) ran their unbeaten streak to eight games and maintained a seven-point advantage atop the WCC standings ahead of the second-place Broncos (5-4-4, 2-0-3 WCC).

*The Pepperdine women’s six-match unbeaten streak came to an end on a golden goal as Gonzaga defeated the Waves, 1-0, in West Coast Conference play. Pepperdine (7-4-4, 0-1-1) had a goal disallowed for offside and hit the post three times. Four of Pepperdine’s last five games have gone to overtime – but they all ended in ties.

*Stanford’s 85th minute goal was enough to beat the UCLA men, 2-1. UCLA fell to 8-3-1, 3-1-0 Pac-10.

*Sydney Leroux scored twice as the UCLA women (9-4-1) drowned the Ducks 3-1 in Eugene.

*Oregon State beat USC (8-4-2) 1-0 in Corvallis.

*In a game between the top two Big West Conference teams, leader UC Irvine defeated the Cal State Northridge women (8-7-0, 3-2-0 BWC) 1-0 in double overtime. The Matadors remain second in the conference standings.

*Diego Turoldo supplied the assist and his brother, Andre, the finish on the opening goal as the as the North Torrance High pair led the Cal State Dominguez Hills men (9-2-2, 7-2-2 CCAA) to a 2-0 win over Humboldt State in Carson.

*Junior All-American Jessica Murphy (West Torrance High) scored both goals – to make it five in her last three games – as the CSUDH women defeated visiting Humboldt State 2-0, to move to 9-3-1, 7-3-1 CCAA.

Final: Chivas USA at Seattle Sounders

Seattle Sounders 2 Chivas USA 1

i-1b471c979e3592196059e88f2a44aab9-osvaldoblaise.jpgThe most important thing to know about this match: if the playoffs began today the Galaxy would play MLS’ hottest team – the Seattle Sounders – in the first round.

Check out the playoff standings.

But then, Chivas USA still have to play the San Jose Earthquakes in midweek.

Game story.

Both of Seattle’s superbly taken goals spoke volumes about their sky-high confidence – and everything about the basics of Chivas USA’s failings all season long.

Both came after Chivas USA gave the ball away in their own half.

Steve Zakuani’s first was individual brilliance, the Sounders second a symphony of teamwork that began and ended with the ever-improving Osvaldo Alonso (seen here celebrating with the prolific Blaise Nkufo, a shrewd post-World Cup pick-up by Coach Sigi Schmid).

The game was essentially over by half time; Chivas USA pulled one back in second half stoppage time, but before that never came close, looking busy to no great effect.

Here’s the Seattle perspective.

The goals are well worth watching:

Chivas USA lineup: Zach Thornton, Mariano Trujillo, Michael Umana, Ante Jazic, Jonathan Bornstein, Rodolfo Espinoza, Michael Lahoud, Paulo Nagamura, Jorge Flores, Jesus Padilla, Giancarlo Maldonado (Sal Zizzo 76)

Poll: Should the Galaxy sign striker Juan Pablo Angel for next season?

i-fe0a204357b0b2911be8c267e6a74dc0-juanpablojump.jpgSuspicions that Juan Pablo Angel, right, would not return to New York next season were confirmed by the player himself during Tuesday’s telecast of the U.S.-Colombia game on ESPN2.

Then on Thursday ESPN reporter Allan Hopkins said four MLS clubs were interested earlier this season in signing the former Aston Villa player, including the Galaxy.

Angel would seem a natural fit for club like the Galaxy that desperately needs an experienced, proven striker up front to partner Edson Buddle (imagine how much effective he would be with Angel alongside him).

Angel may soon be turning 35, but he’s a known quantity to Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena, who coached him at the Red Bulls. And we’ve seen how effective Arena is at wringing every last drop of playing time from such veterans as Eddie Lewis, who will retire at season’s end (I’m guessing along with the likes of Gregg Berhalter and Chris Klein, while you’ve got to wonder if the playing days of Dema Kovalenko and Jovan Kirovski shouldn’t both be over, too).

Those potential departures (and freeing up of salary cap money) mean the Galaxy could benefit even more from the veteran likes of Angel, who has been relatively injury free during his career and is still among the top goalscorers (he sits fourth of the Golden Boot chart right now with 13) in MLS.

And just as importantly, Arena won’t want to see him fall into the clutches of Sigi Schmid in ever-improving Seattle, making them an even tougher MLS rival than they aren’t already (or Colorado for that matter).

So take the poll below and let me know what you think. And better yet expand on your reasoning (whether yea or nay) in the comment section.

Should the Galaxy sign striker Juan Pablo Angel next season?
Yes! If New York is dumb enough to get rid of one of the best strikers in MLS, we’ll take him
No! Enough with the old guys
Only if they get rid of David Beckham to help get under the salary cap
