USL: Galaxy and Orange County SC play to 1-1 draw

In what is being billed as the I-405 Derby, Galaxy II and Orange County SC settled for a 1-1 draw in their first meeting of 2017 in front of a crowd of 2,225, Saturday.

OCSC opened the scoring thanks to an own goal in the 50th minute. In the 66th minuted, Adrian Vera knocked home a rebound after a free kick from Ari Lassiter hit the crossbar to even the score at 1-1.

The teams will face off again May 6 in Irvine.

Galaxy II opens 2017 with 2-0 victory over Vancouver

Galaxy II opened the 2017 USL season with a 2-0 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 at StubHub Center.

Los Dos opened the scoring in the fifth minute with what was ruled as an own goal. In the 67th minute, Ethan Zubak added another goal as new coach Mike Munoz picked up his first victory, replacing Curt Onalfo.

Jon Kempin started in goal and recorded three saves.

Six players made their debut for Galaxy II: Kempin, Ian Lonergan, Jean Engola, Tyler Turner and Miguel Aguilar and Justin Dhillon came on as a second-half sub.

Galaxy II will return to action Saturday at San Antonio FC.

Galaxy II opens 2017 USL season Saturday afternoon

The first team might have the week off, but the Galaxy II will kick off the 2017 USL season, Saturday against Vancouver Whitecaps 2 FC at the StubHub Center’s Track and Field Stadium at 2 p.m.

Former Galaxy player Mike Munoz replaces Curt Onalfo as coach of the club.

13 players are signed to USL contracts with Galaxy II. Seven of those players return from the 2016 roster and six are former Galaxy Academy members: midfielders Ryo Fujii and Adrian Vera, forwards Ethan Zubak and Adonis Amaya and goalkeeper Bennett Sneddon and Eric Liopez.

Here is the roster ahead of the season opener:

GOALKEEPERS (2): Bennett Sneddon, Eric Lopez

DEFENDERS (4): Tyler Turner, Robert Castellanos, Jean Engola, Josh Turnley

MIDFIELDERS (4): Ryo Fujii, Adrian Vera, Miguel Aguilar, Andre Zanga

FORWARDS (3): Ethan Zubak, Adonis Amaya, Justin Dhillon

Per USL rules, a total of 30 players are allowed on a USL team’s roster at any time. In addition to those 30 roster spots, five Academy players are permitted to be members of that roster, for a total of 35.

With 13 players currently signed to USL contracts with Galaxy II, Galaxy and Galaxy Academy players will fill out the remaining space on the Galaxy II roster.

At any point in the season, the Galaxy’s MLS and Academy players are allowed to be made inactive or active on Galaxy II’s roster, with USL rules allowing the club to fluidly move players in and out of the 30-man roster throughout the season.

Galaxy II coaching staff finalized

The coaching staff for LA Galaxy II was finalized Wednesday.

Mike Munoz was hired recently as coach to replace Curt Onalfo. Laurent Courtois and Claine Plummer were added to the staff. Plummer will take role of Goalkeeper coach.

Courtois, 38, was a player/coach for the team’s first season in 2014. His professional career dates back to 1998, with stops at AC Ajaccio, Toulouse, Istres, Grenoble and Lyon. He also played in the Premier League with West Ham United and Spain with Levante.

Plummer has had coaching stops with Chivas USA, Cal State LA, UCLA, Chicago Fire Academy, Jamaican National Team and Real Salt Lake Academy. As a player, he was a member of A.D. Limonese in the Costa Rican First Division after four years as a starting goalkeeper for Cal State LA.

“Laurent is a great addition to our staff, not only because of his extensive experience in soccer, but also his experience with soccer in Los Angeles,” Muñoz said. “With our goalkeeping position, Claine’s wide range of experience and success coaching soccer at the youth and collegiate level is going to make him a very effective piece of this staff.”

Los Dos will kick off the 2017 campaign at StubHub Center Track & Field Stadium on Saturday, March 25 when they host Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2.

USL: Galaxy II and Orange County Blues FC qualify for playoffs

LA Galaxy II finished fifth in the USL Western Conference and will face the Swope Park Rangers at Children’s Mercy Victory Field, uslFriday, Sept. 30 at 5:30 p.m. in the opening round of the Western Conference playoffs.

Galaxy II finished fifth in the conference.

Orange County Blues FC qualified on the final day of the regular season and will face top-seeded Sacramento Republic FC, Saturday at 7:30 p.m. OC Blues finished eighth.

Galaxy II defender Jefrey Payeras selected to Guatemala roster

Galaxy II defender Jefrey Payeras was selected to the 23-man roster for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers for the Guatemalan national team.

This is the second international call-up for Payeras. Guatemala faces Trinidad and Tobago, Friday and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Sept. 6.

Payeras, 22, has made 22 appearances for Galaxy II. He was born in Hawthorne.
